Off the Beaten Path
By Susan Bairley

If there's money to be raised and a course on which to do it, a golf tournament seems to be among the favorite venues - pumping green from the greens into favorite charities. Two well-established tournaments that link the sports world with an unlikely partner are: the 11th annual Great Southern Golf Scramble at the University of Michigan Golf Course on June 24; and the Seventh Annual Jeff Daniels Comedy Golf Jam at Polo Fields Golf and Country Club on June 25.

Perhaps it's no coincidence that both events are in Ann Arbor, which often is considered home to some of Michigan's most liberal thinkers and maybe now, unlikely golfers.

While it seems to follow a traditional style of play, the fact that the Great Southern Golf Scramble is played this far North is, in itself, an interesting nuance. That it benefits the Ark, one of North America's oldest continuing non-profit venues for live acoustic music, adds to its intrigue. Scramble pre-registration yields each golfer a free ticket to the annual celebrity benefit concert, Sunday, June 23, at The Ark. This year's golfing and performing line-up thus far includes Chris Smither, John McCutcheon, Danny Britt and Matt Watroba. For more information, call The Ark at (734) 761-1800, ext. 23.

This year's Comedy Golf Jam is billed "in dishonor of the collected film works of Jeff Daniels." Promotional materials suggest "Jeff and his movies are fair (way) game," and prospective golfers are prompted to think of it as "a roast in motorized carts!" At $2,500 per foursome, it promises to be a raucous game of golf, peppered with shenanigans. The tourney traditionally attracts local celebrities and always features the Hollywood actor/director himself who gets right in on the fairway fun. The tournament, which usually sells out, benefits the Purple Rose Theater Company, founded by Daniels in Chelsea. For more information, call (734) 433-7782. MG
