MG ON THE ROAD
East Lansing
Tom Smith, Peter Cookingham, Birdie Beckwith from The Michigan
Turfgrass Foundation, Clifford Haka from MSU Libraries and a number of
students, superintendents, shapers and individuals interested in golf course
architect, were on hand at the "Meet the Architects" program to meet
Jerry Matthews. Matthews, was the first of two presentations in the
program, Ray Hearn will deliver his remarks on March 25th. The audience
was rewarded for their time as Matthews spoke about the early days with
his father, the legendary golf architect, W. Bruce Matthews, until
today, when his own count of golf courses number over a hundred. For a
great look at the history of the Matthews family, check out their website

MICHIGAN SNOCROSS PLAYS THROUGH AT OTSEGO CLUB
The snowmobiles invaded the Otsego Club a couple of weeks ago to run
the Michigan Snocross. The race is scheduled to be on ESPN 2 next
weekend, but we thought we would let you check out the show a week early.
Michigan resorts and golf courses are continuing to find ways to generate
cash flow by utilization the enormous acreage they have at their

WEST MICHIGAN GOLF SHOWS WELCOMES GRAND TRAVERSE RESORT & CASINOS
AS NEW PAR-3 SPONSOR
One lucky golfer at the 18th annual West Michigan Golf Show-- to be
held Feb. 10-12 in downtown Grand Rapids-- may walk away with $25,000 in
casino chips, thanks to the Show¹s newest sponsor‹Grand Traverse Resort
& Casinos. For years, one of the top attractions at the Show has been
the Par-3 Challenge where patrons purchase shots at an indoor fully
landscaped golf hole with event proceeds going to a local charity. This
year, the Grand Traverse Resort & Casinos Par-3 Challenge will again
invite patrons to test their skill with the hopes of one finalist on Sunday
will make an ace and earn $25,000 in casino chips.
"Grand Traverse Resort & Casinos is very pleased to sponsor the Par-3
Challenge at the 2006 West Michigan Golf Show," said Michael Michaud,
Marketing Director. "As one of the most popular features of the Show, the
Par-3 Challenge will help to showcase our gaming property while also
raising charity support for Big Brothers/Big Sisters."

GOLF COURSE DEVELOPMENT WAY WAY DOWN
NGF tracks golf courses from the planning stages through construction
to opening day. In 2005, there were 124.5 course openings (in 18-hole
equivalents). That¹s fewer than the 150.5 that opened in 2004, and well
below the recent high-water mark of 398.5 reached in 2000. In fact, one
would have to go back to the mid-1980s to find the number of openings
as low as what we saw in 2005. NGF also identified 98 closures (in
18-hole equivalents) in 2005, resulting in a net addition to supply of only
26.5 18-hole courses.

19TH HOLE-A LIVING WILL
A man and his wife were sitting in the living room and he said to her,
"Just so you know, I never want to live in a vegetative state,
dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just
pull the plug."
His wife got up, unplugged the TV and threw out all of his beer.
Thanks a Tip of the Tap to Larry McCafferty for this sage advice.
