COOKINGHAM WINS 2005 USGA GREEN SECTION AWARD
Peter Cookingham, the project manager of the Turfgrass Information Center (TIC) at Michigan State University, the world's largest collection of turfgrass science and management information, is the winner of the 2005 United States Golf Association Green Section Award. The award is given annually by a distinguished panel of experts in the turfgrass field and recognizes persons for contributions to golf through work with turfgrass.

As the only full-time librarian dedicated to this field in the world, Cookingham, 52, of Williamston, Mich., has spent nearly 20 years building this unique database. The Turfgrass Information File (TGIF) has logged more than 100,000 articles, books and other important publications for world wide access via the Internet. Included in the collection are 80 years of USGA Green Section publications and 20 years of turfgrass research. This sophisticated system provides computer access to important information for golf superintendents, scientists and students.

"I am so very honored and very humbled at this award," Cookingham said. "As one fortunate enough to work every day with parts of the legacy of nearly every previous recipient of the award, I know all too well what extraordinary company that is."

LATE BREAKING NEWS THAT'S VERY LATE
During the Ryder Cup we ran a couple of articles about Dave Ogron, "The Fastest Golf Ball Striker in the World". In addition, we had him on the Michigan Golfer Radio Show to talk about his attempt to break a world record at Mulligan's Golf Center

Like a human ball machine, he propels his 5-wood rescue club as a windmill, never resting. His ball setter, Scott 'Speedy' McKinney, sets each ball on the tee quickly to keep Ogron's rhythm going. Each ball must travel at least 100 yards and land within a 30-degree arc to count. According to Guinness, 9,352 golfers have attempted the 24-hour record over the years, and more than 35,000 have attempted the one-hour record.

He hit 2,275 balls in one hour in Michigan during the 35th Ryder Cup last September to raise roughly money for a local man paralyzed by an accident.Unfortunately, only a small crowd witnessed the breaking of the record.

Bruce Conroy, a Michigan golf professional who helped to coordinate the event, said the show would have been more exciting if there was a crowd, particularly children, to generate a sense of drama.

"The fact that he hit that many balls is grueling," Conroy said. "He's round-housing, round-housing. I don't know how the ball setter has all his fingers. The act is pretty unique."

TOM DOAK AND RENAISSANCE GOLF DESIGN OFFER 2005 INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Tom Doak, one of the world¹s most highly acclaimed golf course architects, is again offering an internship program for aspiring golf course architects.

His company, Renaissance Golf Design, is offering one internship in golf course design for the summer or fall of 2005. The term of the internship is flexible depending on the winning candidate's circumstances. Anyone may apply, regardless of experience. Once again, Doak is hoping to identify the most talented people entering the business and give them valuable experience whether their futures lie with Doak¹s Renaissance Golf Design or another firm.

An internship with Tom Doak will offer experience in three areas: Office work at the company¹s main office in Traverse City, Mich.; field work on the construction site of one of its active projects; and some opportunity to travel with Doak and/or other architects in the firm to evaluate potential new projects or consult on course design. The position will pay $5,000 for three months, including housing expenses in Traverse City and all other travel-related expenses during the internship. Applications should include only two pages:

1. Personal information including academic background, prior work experience in the golf business, why you are interested in this internship, and dates you would be available to work.

2. Page two shall depict the applicant's design of an "ideal" golf hole of his or her own creation. Designs should be adaptable to a wide variety of site conditions [i.e., not dependent on oceanfront, huge oak trees, or other unusual features in order to work].

Designs inspired by existing golf holes are permitted, but in such circumstances applicant should reference the original hole(s) and designer, explaining how the new design is different and why.

Submission Deadline:

Please submit applications so they reach the Traverse City offices no later than Feb. 25, 2005. The company intends to select several finalists for personal interviews and to award the internship before March 31, 2005. Please address the application as follows:

CRAIG HOFFMAN, OF THE ROCK GOLF COURSE, TO BE HONORED
Four members of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) will be recognized with 2004 Excellence in Government Relations (EGR) Awards for their outstanding government relations efforts in advocacy and compliance.

The awards will be presented Feb. 11 during the General Session of the GCSAA Education Conference and inaugural Golf Industry Show in Orlando.

Those to be honored are Craig A. Hoffman, golf course superintendent at The Rock Golf Course on Drummond Island, Mich.; Stephen A. Kealy, CGCS at Glendale Country Club in Bellevue, Wash.; Kenneth N. Lallier, CGCS at The Quechee Club in Hartford, Vt.; and Sean A. Kjemhus, golf course superintendent at Stewart Creek Golf and Country Club in Canmore, Alberta, Canada.

Hoffman will receive an advocacy award for developing working relationships with state and local government officials. His efforts helped increase awareness and understanding of golf-specific issues at the local, state and federal levels of government and kept superintendents across Michigan informed of government actions impacting the golf industry. Because of these efforts, Hoffman was invited in 2003 to serve on the governor¹s Groundwater Conservation Advisory Council, a precedent-setting appointment for the golf industry in the state.
