COUNT DOWN TO THE RYDER CUP- THE 1927 MATCH

1927 Worcester Country Club, Worcester, Massachusetts
Captains: Walter Hagen (US), Ted Ray (GB)
USA 9 1/2GB 2 1/2

Beginning with the first formal match, the U.S. Ryder Cup Team elected to field a team of native-born Americans. Only Walter Hagen, Bill Mehlhorn and Al Watrous remained from the informal U.S. squad of the previous year. The British team was virtually intact from 1926, with the exception of Charles Whitcombe, who replaced his brother Ernie, and Ted Ray, who took over the captain's duties from Abe Mitchell, who was diagnosed with appendicitis. The competition at Worcester Country Club featured four foursomes and eight singles matches. The Americans won nine matches, with only two defeats and one halve. Ted Ray later summed up the initial Matches: "One of the chief reasons for our failure was the superior putting of the American team. They holed out much better than we did."

GRAND TRAVERSE RESORT AND SPA RECEIVES 2003 PINNACLE AWARD

Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, the Midwest's largest full-service, year-round resort, was awarded the 2003 Pinnacle Award by Successful Meetings Magazine. The resort was one of 33 hotels and resorts in the Midwest to receive the award, and one of only four in Michigan. Readers voted based on the following criteria--overall service, meeting rooms, meeting equipment, recreational facilities, quality of food, exhibit space, accessibility and social consciousness. For additional information about the Pinnacle Awards, visit http://www.successfulmeetings.com.

AND SPEAKING OF AWARDS

Five Michigan resorts have been honoured by Travel & Leisure Golf magazine.
Known by golf travelers as "America's Summer Golf Capital," Michigan had more resorts selected in the top 25 than any other state in the region, which included the Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. Those honored were Bay Harbor, Boyne Highlands, Treetops, Shanty Creek and Grand Traverse Resort.

All five Michigan resorts were selected in the top 25 in all resort categories.
"Having five of our top resort destinations selected among the best in the region by Travel & Leisure Golf shows the quantity and quality of great golf destinations in Michigan. These rankings, along with the Ryder Cup coming later this year, further solidify the State of Michigan as one of the leading golf destinations in the world," said George Zimmermann,- Vice President of Travel Michigan.

Also included in the survey was a list of the top public courses in the region. Michigan courses listed included Arcadia Bluffs, Bay Harbor (Links/Quarry), Pilgrims Run, Lakewood Shores-Gailes, and Tullymore Golf Club.

LPGA TIP OF THE WEEK

Short game
For better control with short shots around the green, hold the club toward the end of the grip close to the shaft, just like when your write with a pen. Keep the hands and arms soft. Favor more weight on your front foot. Take a practice swing visualizing the type of shot you want to hit. Pick out a spot on the green to land the ball and always clip the grass with the club head to ensure correct contact with the ball. For a low, running shot, visualize hitting a low shot under a tree branch. Place the ball back in your stance with your hands ahead of the ball. For high, soft shots, visualize tossing a ball high in the air. Place the ball in the center of your stance and keep your hands and club in the center of your body.

AMERICANS ARE PLAYING MORE AGAIN, ACCORDING TO LEISURETRAK STUDY

The gradual upturn in sports, fitness and recreational activities noted in recent LeisureTRAK reports continued in the second quarter, despite weekend rains that discouraged outdoor activity in the East for much of the period. For the second quarter, the participation level reached 57% versus 54% in the same quarter last year. Participation levels have been up from year-earlier levels for the last three quarters.

The two most popular activities were walking (31%) and exercising (18%). Each reached rare levels of activity, boosted by participants age 45 and older (45% and 21%, respectively). Golf (15%) and cycling (13%) also saw activity spikes, thanks to those ages 35-44.

Golf continues to appeal to one of its most important traditional audiences, the wealthiest Americans. A whopping 26% of those with incomes of more than $80,000 played golf during the second quarter. Golf's prestige status is firmly intact. The wealthy, in fact, are anything but lazy. Nearly twice as many Americans with income of more than $80,000 go to health clubs and lift weights. These monied Americans are also more likely to jog or run. They are twice as likely to take a hiking or backpacking vacation.

The LeisureTRAK¨ Report, produced by the Leisure Trends Group, Boulder, Colo., is based on a quarterly poll of 1,000 American adults age 16-older, with results projectab http://www.leisuretrends.com.
