==========
FEBRUARY
==========
Loud are the thunder drums in the tents of the mountains.
Oh, long, long
Have we eaten chia seeds
and dried deer's flesh of the summer killing.
We are tired of our huts
and the smoky smell of our clothing.
We are sick with the desire for the sun
And the grass on the mountain.
Paiute Late Winter Song

GLSP BEGINS TAPING SHOWS IN HD
===============================
The GLSP Television Network http://youtube.com/results?search_query=glsp++television+network&search=Search has begun the process of converting its camera equipment and editing programs to accommodate the HD format. Our first such presentation was this week's internet Advisor show.

"High-definition television (HDTV) yields a better-quality image than does standard television, because it has a greater number of lines of resolution. Because the signal is a digital signal, it produces neither a snowy nor pale image from a weak signal or signal interference effects, such as herringbone patterns, or vertical rolling. Image colours are more realistic, because of the greater bandwidth. The visual information is some 2-5 times sharper because the gaps between the scan lines are narrower or invisible to the naked eye."

Quote Source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_television#Advantages_of_HDTV_expressed_in_non-technical_terms

The new format will allow the videos we create and put online or covert to DVDs, the ability to be played on the wider screen formats that are becoming the norm in viewer homes. In the past seven years, we have put up over a thousand shows on our five networks and another 350 show on You Tube.

MICHIGAN TRAVEL TELEVISION ON THE ROAD
Detroit-WJR, The Internet Advisor Show
========================================
This week, we visited the WJR studios to be one of the guests on the station's "Internet Advisor" show with Gary Baker, Foster Braun, Ed Rudel and Lauren Baker. The Interent Advisor was the program where we launched our Michigan Golfer Television Show http://michigangolfer.tv/2001shows/show7/index.html in March of 2001.

The Internet Advisor has been a benchmark show on WJR. Started 10 years ago, it has provided an audio timeline for the amazing impact that the Internet has made not only in Michigan, but globally as well. Enjoy.

THOUGHTS WHILE WATCHING THE BUICK INVITATIONAL
By Terry Moore
=================================================
Tiger Woods put the pedal to the medal and almost lapped the field at the Buick Invitational last week in winning his 62nd Tour victory. In addition to “the shock” of Tiger bogeying three holes in the row in the last round, here are few other tidbits I noted from my skybox in the den:

Buick Motors launched a sensational new 30-second television ad with Tiger and the Enclave, its new cross-over SUV. Seated and serious-minded, Tiger is seen in a one-on-one interview format talking about his family and the safety features and benefits of the Enclave. Instead of being just another celebrity product spokesperson, Tiger lends credibility and gravitas to the Buick brand with this breakthrough testimonial. Buick (and Michigan) has a nice hit on its hands with the Enclave, built in Lansing, and lauded by dealers, consumers and car critics alike.

Mt. Pleasant native Doug LaBelle II followed up on a good payday in Hawaii ($113,571) by cashing a check for $65,260 in San Diego in spite of a faltering final round 77. Sunday’s conditions were demanding, particularly late in the day when LaBelle was playing. Labelle lost his Tour card last year but is playing now on sponsors’ exemptions and other special conditions. Meanwhile, Marshall’s John Morse is playing this week at the Nationwide’s Mexico Open Presented by Corona. (Too bad the National Lime Industry didn’t sign on as a secondary sponsor.)

The Golf Channel’s anchor Kelly Tilghman was back on the air after a two-week suspension for making an off-the-cuff controversial remark. Ironically, in her taped apology opening the broadcast on Thursday, part of her statement was without sound due to a technical glitch. By the way, would the CBS Golf producers please hire a speech and diction coach for Nick Faldo. Yes, Faldo offers insightful, humorous and candid commentary but often his Cockney-like delivery is so garbled it’s unintelligible. Hey, Nick (and CBS) it’s fixable; retain Professor Higgins from My Fair Lady. Repeat: “The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.”

FINAL FROST BITE OPEN TO BE HELD IN HARRISON-YET ANOTHER MICHIGAN GOLF TOURNAMENT CASUALTY
===============================================================================================
Another dish of sorrow and woe is being served to the golfers of our state. Yet another Michigan golf tournament is shutting down. Joining, the ranks of now defunct or last hurray tournaments is the The Frost Bite Open. This homage to golf, is much like the Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, in that it signals that winter weather will soon to be gone.

Held in Harrision and sponsored by the Harrison Chamber of Commerce , “The 20th and Final Annual Frostbite Open,", will be held on Saturday, February 16 at the Budd Lake Power Docks. Tee Off is at 1:00 p.m. with registration begining at 11:30 a.m. at the Power Docks. Cost: $15.00 per person – Pre registration, $20.00 per person – Late registration http://www.harrisonchamber.com/FrostBiteOpen.htm

GEORGE PEPER TO RECEIVE ASGCA'S DONALD ROSS AWARD
===============================================
George Peper, editor-in-chief of “Golf Magazine” for a quarter of a century and author of 17 books on golf and golf courses, has been chosen to receive the 2008 Donald Ross Award from the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA). He will accept the award during ASGCA’s 62nd Annual Meeting, on Apr. 3, 2008 in St. Andrews, Scotland.

The award is given annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to golf and golf course architecture. President Steve Forrest, ASGCA will present the award to Peper at the group’s Donald Ross Banquet at the Rusacks Hotel in St. Andrews.

“George Peper is one of the most knowledgeable voices in golf, respected for his prolific journalistic and publishing career and his respect for and knowledge of golf courses,” notes Forrest. “He continues as editor-at-large for ‘Links’ Magazine and lives in St. Andrews. I will be honored to present this award to a man who has devoted his career to understanding and promoting golf and golf courses.”

Peper is a graduate of Princeton University, and went on to study for his Ph.D. in comparative literature at Yale University. He left that program to join the staff of “Golf Magazine.” Under his stewardship, the magazine became the most widely-read in the industry and began publishing the first “Top 100 Golf Courses in the World” lists. While there, he also published a number of books on the game, including “The World’s 500 Greatest Golf Holes,” “Golf Courses of the PGA Tour,” “Golf in America” and most recently “Two Years in St. Andrews: At Home on the 18th Hole”.

Peper will be the 33rd winner of the Donald Ross Award.

BOOK REVIEW: "A GIRL'S ON-COURSE SURVIVAL GUIDE TO GOLF". By Christina Ricci
=======================================================================
Okay, so the book has a pink cover, so what. "A Girl's On-Course Survival Guide to Golf", is a smartly written, well illustrated and focused guide for a novice woman golfer. I would think that it would be part of any of the instructional literature suggested for a ladies golf school. The book is also designed so that it can easily be put in your golf bag.

The guide is scheduled for a March 4th publication date. It is published by Thomas Nelson Company

ECONOMIC IMPACT OF GOLF
===========================
Golf in the United States generated $76 billion in direct economic impact in 2005, according to a new study commissioned by the World Golf Foundation's GOLF 20/20 initiative. This represents a 23% increase from $62 billion five years ago. The study, the 2005 Golf Economy Report, was conducted by SRI International and is an update to a similar SRI study in 2000.

The five-year growth of approximately $14 billion represents an average annual growth rate of 4.1%. The increase primarily reflects growth in golf facility revenues, real estate and golf-related tourism.

As it did for 2000, the report identified the financial contributions from key golf segments, including golf facility operations ($28 billion); golf course capital investment ($3.6 billion); golfer supplies ($6.1 billion); tournaments, golf associations, and endorsements ($1.7 billion); and charities ($3.5 billion).

The 2005 totals represent increases over the 2000 numbers in each category, with the exception of a decline in golf course capital investment, a category that encompasses both existing facility capital investment and new golf course construction. According to the report, the decline in this category was expected and reflects a slowing rate of golf course construction as part of the market's correction to an oversupply of courses.

Of the $6.1 billion spent on golfer supplies, the largest portion was spent on equipment ($3.7 billion). Slightly more than $1.5 billion was spent on golf apparel and $925 million on magazines and books.

In addition to golf's direct revenues, the 2005 Golf Economy Report presents for the first time the direct, indirect, induced and total economic impact of golf on the U.S. economy. The report indicates that golf generated a total economic impact of $195 billion in 2005, creating approximately two million jobs with wage income of $61 billion.

New schedules are erasing European Tour's past, as noted by Golfweek, writer Alistar Tait. Former European championships that have fallen by the wayside include: The Belgian Open, German Open, English Open, Monte Carlo and Lancôme Trophy are now but footnotes in European Tour history.
