TREETOPS LADIES GOLF SCHOOL
Judy Mason is certainly one of the better known women's golf instructors in Michigan. She has been a teaching professional at Wild Bluff, The Otsego Club, Marsh Ridge, Candlestone, Boyne and Michaywe. While working for other clubs this past decade, she has also worked with Treetops in developing the Ladies Golf School. Our cameras were on hand, last summer, to record the first two days of a three day school. It was a blast.
While Judy remains the Pied Piper of the school, there were six other Treetops pros on hand to make sure every golfer got the TLC that Treetops is noted for. Gene Bone, a recent Treetops hire, has quickly become a fixture and will be running both Couples Schools this summer. This year, they have eight Ladies Golf Schools, two Ladies Alumni Golf Schools and two Couples Schools.
http://www.treetops.com/index.php?method=golf&subpage=ladiesgolfschool The schools start in May and end in mid August.
We had a fun time taping the Ladies Golf School, almost as much fun as the ladies had while attending it.

GOLF SCHOOLS BEGIN THEIR RECRUITMENT
With the start of the golf shows, the various golf schools around the state will begin their recruitment for 2008 students. As a precursor to your golf show visit or an online reminder of some of the state's best known schools, here are some videos to consider.

WMGS TOP TEN EVENTS FROM THE PAST 20 YEARS
As said about the Leaning Tower of Pisa, everyone loves a list. And so to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the West Michigan Golf Show, organizers for the weekend event set for Feb. 22-24 at the DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids have compiled a Top Ten list of show highlights from the past two decades. With a drum roll, please, here they are in no particular order:
1. At his indoor clinic, National Long Drive Champion Evan “Big Cat” Williams drives a golf ball through a phone book. (1989)
2. Show attendee Tom Deane makes an ace at the fully landscaped indoor Par-Three hole inside the Welsh Auditorium and wins a two-year lease on a new Cadillac Escalade. (2003)
3. Treetops’ acclaimed teaching pro Rick Smith returns to the Golf Show and packs the seats for his clinics and to tout his newest course design, Arcadia Bluffs. (1999)
4. It’s SRO for golfers listening to clinics by Jim Flick, legendary golf instructor and esteemed teacher of Tour players, including Jack Nicklaus. (2005)
5. West Michigan Golf Show moves into the state-of-the-art DeVos Place. (2004)
6. Elaine Crosby, a top LPGA Tour player from Jackson (MI), is the first female headliner. (1991)
7. Dr. Deborah Graham, whose client list includes Ryder Cup Captain Dave Stockton, is the first sports psychologist as a Show headliner (1997)
8. In the grand door prize drawing, Rockford’s Jim Abplanalp wins a dream golf trip for two to Scotland. (1992)
9. A Friday’s “Ladies Night” at the Show offers special events, seminars and a fashion show in concert with the Executive Women’s Golf Association. (2005)
10. West Michigan Golf Show leaves the Ford Fieldhouse after a 12-year run for the more spacious Grand Center. (2002)
Produced by ShowSpan Inc., the West Michigan Golf Show’s hours are 4:00 pm-9:00 pm, Friday; 10:00 am-7:00 pm, Saturday; and 10:00 am-5:00 pm, Sunday. NGF RECOGNIZES GULL LAKE VIEW WITH THE 6th ANNUAL CUSTOMER LOYALTY AWARDS
The National Golf Foundation (NGF) is presenting the 6th annual Customer Loyalty Awards to managers of public golf facilities that received high approval ratings from their customers. And, for the first year, NGF has created a new award for "most improved" facilities who conducted customer surveys in 2006 and 2007.
The Customer Loyalty Awards are based on surveys fielded through NGF's online Golfer Survey Program (GSP). As part of this program, golfers indicate how likely they would be to recommend a particular golf course to a friend or colleague. The most recommended facilities, and the most improved, are being recognized with these awards.
"This year's awards recognize golf facilities as far away as Japan and Alaska," says Ben Fowler, NGF's golf facility research and consulting sales manager. "Our extended geographic reach is exemplary of the growth of the GSP system."
The significance of these awards lies in the fact that facilities with higher loyalty scores reap the benefits of increased rounds played and revenues. GSP shows facility operators the extent to which their customers would recommend them, and also provides data on the important metrics of wallet share and customer satisfaction with specific facility attributes.
First category - Facilities with Highest Loyalty Scores- Standard ($40-$70)
Arrowhead Pointe at Lake Richard B. Russell,Elberton, Georgia winner
Butterfield Trail Golf Club,El Paso,Texas runner-up
Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort.Augusta,Michigan runner-up
Little Ocmulgee at Wallace Adams Course, McRae,Georgia runner-up
Sand Creek Station Golf Club, Newton, Kansas, runner-up
Wilderness Golf Club, Lake Jackson, Texas runner-up
Note: The Dul Family Player Development Leadership Award was given to Ashleigh Kosin of Gull Lake View Golf Club. this year.
WE'VE GOT MAIL: JUSTIN HICKS GETS HIS DUE
In your report on Kyle Dobbs recent victory in an MLGT event you failed to mention that Justin Hicks is from Grosse Isle and (I believe) played on the UM golf team with the "Dobber". Justin has actually had a fair amount of success playing mini tour golf, winning a few events and making it to the final stage of Q-School a few years back. Justin is a great guy and worked at Miles of Golf while he attended UM. I think he graduated in 98 or 99.
Michigan Golf News isn't alone in not covering Hicks. Last year he finished 2nd in a Nationwide event and neither the Detroit News or Free Press mentioned it. I always enjoy reading Michigan Golf News on Friday's -thanks for all the good reads and video!

NGF: DECEMBER GOLF ROUNDS PLAYED FALL AND YEAR ENDS SLIGHTLY NEGATIVE
After a 3.8% decline in November, rounds played in December fell a precipitous 14.2%, according to the National Golf Foundation. Since December rounds played are among the lowest of the year, the decrease moved year-to-date rounds played from flat in November to down 0.5% for the entire year.
The reporting is based on data from operators at more than 1,800 golf facilities. For the full year 2006, rounds played were up 0.8%. Of the 11 regions surveyed, six showed declines for the entire year. The South Central region had the steepest decline, 6.8%. The Gulf Coast region trailed, down 3.6%. The Southeast region showed the strongest increase, up 2.0%, followed by the Northeast, up 1.5%. All other regions finished in the +1.2% to -1.7% range.
For the full year, play at value courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart below $40), was down 0.5%. At premium public courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart above $70), rounds played have rose 0.3%. At standard courses ($40-70), play was up 0.2%. Overall, rounds played at all public courses fell 0.3% in 2007.
Private courses didn’t do quite as well, with rounds played for the 12 months slipping 1.6% versus 2006.
According to Golf Datatech, total rounds played were down 12.6% in December 2007 compared to December 2006 and were down 0.1% for 2007 compared to 2006. Its report contains 2,615 reporting courses.

LINKS OF PINEWOOD AND ELDORADO (WALLED LAKE) TO CLOSE
MG Tipster, Peter Allen, indicates that the Links of Pinewood and the Eldorado GC (Walled Lake) will not reopen this year. The reason for being, that M-5 is being lengthened and will go through both courses.
Links of Pinewood
The Links of Pinewood was designed by Ernie Fuller and opened for play in 1985. Fuller also designed the nearby Bay Pointe GC The course was designer by Ernie Fuller, who also designed the nearby, Bay Pointe Golf Club. Gene Bone II, now at Treetops, was the director of golf at the Links for over 20 years. The Links of Pinewood was the former home of the Michigan Section PGA. The front lobby had one of the most complete sets of Walter Hagen memorabilia. Walter was a friend of Ernie Fuller family.
The El Dorado Golf Course
The El Dorado GC was built in 1967 with Harry Bowers being the designer. Bowers went on to design other courses in Michigan, namely; Caberfae GC in Cadillac, Crooked Tree GC in Petoskey, Downing Farms GC in Northville, Inkster Valley GC in Inkster, Pierce Lake GC in Chelsea and The Rock at Woodmoor on Drummond Island.
El Dorado was a course on a tight piece of land that played to a par 70 at 5,758.
Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Peter Allen, Michigan Hornung representative, for passing this info on.
