MGN ON THE ROAD
Key West
At the entrance to the island of Key West, the Rees Jones designed Key
West Golf Club awaits you. This 18 hole course encompass over 200 acres
of beautiful Florida Keys foliage and wildlife.
Big money is rolling into Key West and the island is undergoing a
serious business and building boom. Besides golf, there are countless ways
to recreate and lose those up north, snow covered, too cold blues.

Orlando
The PGA Merchandise Show met the needs of many golf professionals this
past week as it continued its rich history of service. The following
Michigan firms displayed their wares this year:
Buick Scramble Golf Tournament
Ferris State University-PGM Program
Flow Rite Controls
Franklin Distributors
Handicomp
Ididit,Inc
Interactive Frontiers
JDT Enterprises
Kentucky Trailer Technologies
Kool Tee
Palm Springs Country Club
Poncho Balls
Preferred Products
Pro Club Cleaner
Golf Gazebo-Summit Life Systems
Tiger Shark Golf
MGN attended the show on getaway Sunday when most of the serious buyers
had made their appearances and selections. We did bump into John
Lindeman, of Walnut Creek, Stu Nealy and Ken Kapcia of Handicomp, Tom Cleary
of All About Golf and Big Break II winner Kip Henley. who will make his
debut on the Nationwide Tour in May.
We stayed at WDW and was able to observe, but not play, the action on
their courses; Lake Buena Vista, Palm, Magnolia, Pete Dye's Eagle Pines,
Tom Fazio's Osprey Ridge and the nine hole walking course, Oak Trail.

Still a highlight was the opportunity to meet both Pete and Tom when
they opened Eagle Pines and Osprey Ridge a decade ago.

COOKINGHAM WINS 2005 USGA GREEN SECTION AWARD
Peter Cookingham, the project manager of the Turfgrass Information
Center (TIC) at Michigan State University, the world's largest collection
of turfgrass science and management information, is the winner of the
2005 United States Golf Association Green Section Award. The award is
given annually by a distinguished panel of experts in the turfgrass field
and recognizes persons for contributions to golf through work with
turfgrass.
As the only full-time librarian dedicated to this field in the world,
Cookingham, 52, of Williamston, Mich., has spent nearly 20 years
building this unique database. The Turfgrass Information File (TGIF) has
logged more than 100,000 articles, books and other important publications
for world wide access via the Internet. Included in the collection are 80
years of USGA Green Section publications and 20 years of turfgrass
research. This sophisticated system provides computer access to important
information for golf superintendents, scientists and students.
"I am so very honored and very humbled at this award," Cookingham said.
"As one fortunate enough to work every day with parts of the legacy of
nearly every previous recipient of the award, I know all too well what
extraordinary company that is."

BIG BREAK III BEGINS ON THE GOLF CHANNEL
The third season of The Big Break started up at the Golf Channel this
week. This time the women have the opportunity to star. However,
Michigan will have to take a pass on this one as none of the contestants are
from out state. In Big Break I, Anthony Sorentino went to the final
round, before his loss. He did get to play in a couple of Canadian Tour
events, but did not do well. In Big Break II, Bart Lower, and EMU golf
team alum, finished third, but will be invited back to Big Break IV,
because of his popularity. Lower, has moved to Florida to work for Pulte
Homes and was seen crusing the golf show.
BIG BREAK III-LADIES ONLY
This time Michigan missed out on show time in the upcoming 3rd edition
of The Big Break. This is the Ladies Only edition and features three
Californians, two Canadians, two Floridians and representatives from
Missouri, New York and Nebraska, will premier on the Golf Channel on
February 8. In the prior two shows, Michigan was represented by Anthony
Sorentino of Rochester Hills, who finished second in The Big Break and Bart
Lower, from Ionia, who finished third in Big Break II.
The Ladies Only show was taped at Kingsmill Resort and Spa in Virginia,
home of the Michelob Ultra LPGA tournament. Previous shows were taped
at Treetops Resort in Gaylord and four courses in the Las Vegas area.
The winner will have exemptions to four LPGA tournaments in 2005.
Ladies Only, will be hosted by Vince Cellini and Stephanie Sparks.

HITTING THE LINKS-AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF GOLF COURSE ARCHITECTS-ARTHUR HILLS/STEVE FORREST
This week we are taking a look at the American Association of Golf
Course Architects site and in particular the section that features the
Living History Series. The Living History Series is represented in a
sublink of the site and contains a series of video interviews. The site of
resides on Michigan State University's server and website.

Philosophy of Design
"I think my design philosophy comes from a very traditional or historic
approach to the game. I have always admired the more traditional
courses like Pinehurst #2, Shinnecock Hills, Cypress Point, Prairie Dunes,
Seminole, Merion and Inverness.
We try to build a course that is natural, that relates very carefully
to the land and doesn't require a tremendous amount of earth moving,
always keeping in mind the strategy of the game and the elements that
provide beauty in a golf course -- textures and colors, shadowing and
framing."

VIRTUALLY PERFECT GOLF
Tim Stewart is crowing about his new Virtually Perfect Golf center in
Novi. In fact, he is inviting folks over to see it during the Michigan
Golf Show. The new indoor golf learning center - the first of its kind
in the country- is a revolutionary new golf instruction system that is
changing the way that golf is taught and learned. It's a dramatic
departure from previously available video analysis tools that have been used
in teaching golf, because it teaches the student in real time - that
is, as they swing. Using patented virtual reality technology, Virtually
Perfect Golf puts a student "inside" the body of a 3-dimensional
computer model with an ideal golf swing.

19TH HOLE-CAPITALISM
TRADITIONAL CAPITALISM:
You have two cows.
You sell one and buy a bull.
Your herd multiplies, and the economy grows.
You sell the herd and retire on the income.
AN AMERICAN CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You sell one, and force the other to produce the milk of four cows.
You are surprised when the cow drops dead.
A FRENCH CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You go on strike because you want three cows.
A JAPANESE CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You re-design them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow
and produce twenty times the milk.
You then create irritating cow cartoon images called Cowkimon and
market them world-wide at a fantastic profit.
A GERMAN CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You re-engineer them so they live for 100 years, eat once a month,
and milk themselves.
AN ENGLISH CORPORATION
You have two cows.
Both are mad.
AN ITALIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows, but you don't know where they are.
You break for lunch.
A RUSSIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You count them and learn you have five cows.
You count them again and learn you have 42 cows.
You count them again and learn you have 12 cows.
You stop counting cows and open another bottle of vodka.
A SWISS CORPORATION
You have 5000 cows, none of which belong to you.
You charge others for storing them.
A HINDU CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You worship them.
A CHINESE CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You have 300 people milking them.
You claim full employment, high bovine productivity, and arrest the
newsman who reported the numbers.
A WELSH CORPORATION
You have two cows.
The younger one is rather attractive
AN AUSTRALIAN CORPORATION
Western suburbs style....
You have 2 stolen bulls but think they are cows You die the first
time you try and milk them.
AN IRISH CORPORATION
Who cares, The EU Really owns them now and the pub is still serving
A NEW ZEALND CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You don't know what they are used for as they aren't sheep You shag
them anyway.
Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Jim McIntyre of Knorr Marketing for this
worldly gem.
