MGN ON THE ROAD
Ann Arbor
We met up with Dave Gunderson, of Golf Connex, who also just returned from the PGA Show. Dave will be working with Michigan AAA this year as well as the folks from TeeTime King, to make sure golfers can register some of their tee times online.

Detroit
we stopped by our old friends, Foster Braun and Gary Baker who were celebrating the 5th anniversary of their "Internet Advisor" show on WJR. They were on hand to help us launch the Michigan Golfer online site in the mid 90's and our Michigan Golfer TV show in March of 2001. I was coming back from the London Golf Show and worried about making the 4:00 show, but customs moved us through pretty fast. It was nice listening to the final minutes of the Michigan basketball while in the tunnel. Congrats to WJR for wiring the tunnel. We will contribute to their celebration by putting up their party on our Michigan Travel show today. Check out

London
The London Golf Expo is a terrific show. Claudio and Terrie Demarch have done a nice job in providing a friendly venue for people to come in out of the Canadian cold and to start thinking about the upcoming golf season. Michigan was well represented with Garland, Thunder Bay Resort, Double JJ Ranch, Doherty Hotel, Flint Area CVB, Lakeview Hills Golf and Resort, Golf Manistee, Otsego Club and The Michigan Golfer on hand.

On the Canadian side they were celebrating some new course openings. New this year are Paris Grand Golf Club, Paris; The Legends at Niagara, Niagara; Whistle Bear GC in Cambridge; Rebel Creek in Petersburg. There were some old Canadian favorites at booths that included, Widder Station, Ironwood and Pike Lake. Area destinations represented at the show included, Mississippi, Virginia, Trumbull County, Ohio, Bermuda and Malaysia.

Claudio, indicated that the numbers were up for Friday and he was sure that the trend would continue for the remainder of the weekend.

Thompsonville
Crystal Mountain Resort

I have been coming to this fabled resort for 25 years. During that time, I have seen Crystal Mountain grow lift by lift, golf course by golf course, building by building, amenity by amenity and smile by smile.

The new Kinlochen is the latest of the additions to the resort and it is a killer facility. As I keyboard this newsletter I am in the top suite of the facility, named Kellie. I have a roaring fire going on the in fireplace, a hot cup of coffee on the stand beside me and an absolutely astounding view of Buck' Run, one of Crystal Mountain's great trails. Yes, there are times when being a golf writer is absolutely terrific. We were guests of the resort to do a television show on Jeanne Thoren's Ski School for our Michigan Skier TV Show.

We also did a segment for our upcoming "Golf Schools and Academies" show with Brad Dean, Director of Golf.

MICHIGAN GOLFER TV SHOW-MISSISSIPPI GOLF ADVENTURES
Host Bill Shelton, returns to his roots, as he takes some time to play some Mississippi golf.

Bill was born in Mississippi, the son of a preacher man. During his college years he was involved in the campus radio show on sports and really liked doing that. However, education called and he went on to excel in the field, serving as President of Eastern Michigan University for 11 years. Bill is how President Emeritus of EMU and also serves as a faculty member in the College of Education's Educational Leadership program.

Join Bill, as he visits some exceptional golf courses in his home state. Mississippi, like every other state in the union, is anxious to attract some golfers from our state. I am sure that after this show, you will be intrigued by the possibility of visiting the state. http://mississippi.org

REEBOK'S TERRY TATE OFFICE LINEBACKER TO BREAK UP GLSP SHOWS
One of the biggest advertising stories this year is the success of Terry Tate, the Official Linebacker of Reebok. USA Today columnist, Michael McCarthy, had this to say in his February 4th column, "Take that Nike! ". Since Tate's debut in a 60 second-ad during the Super Bowl Jan.26, Reebok says about 1.9 million consumers have visited its Web site and 1.6 million have downloaded the first of Tate's four Web films. It says visits to the online store have quadrupled."

The success of the Reebok site http://www.terrytate.reebok.com/watch.asp coupled with the awesome success of BMW's site, http://bmwfilms.com is proof positive, that Internet Television is the next big thing.

GLSP is proud to carry the Terry Tate commercials in many of our upcoming network shows. Look for Terry to appear in our Michigan Golfer, Michigan Runner, Michigan Skier, Michigan Travel and Running Network shows.

GOLF CLUB OF MICHIGAN ON THE BLOCK
Golf Club of Michigan, LLC has put their course up for sale to pay off existing debt. "The owners had great visions but simply ran out of money to complete the development," said Dan Weiner, the Bloomfield Hills-based attorney for the partners in Golf Club of Michigan.

GREENSCAPE UPDATE
Leigh Thurston Greenscape Designs dropped us a line to let us know what they have been up to.

"Art, we just finished a first phase of an improvement program at Glenhurst Golf Course in Redford. Over half of the improvements are now in place. It will be wrapped up next fall. We are modifying three holes and building three new greens to improve the layout, safety, and lengthen the course where possible. We are adding tees and renovating tees to insure sufficient teeing area for all players. We are also implementing a complete bunker renovation to add a little drama and make sure they are all drained. Three new timber bridges will be installed to improve circulation. The landscape will also be enhanced by planting over 100 trees and shrubs.

We also made some major irrigation improvements to the Pierce Lake Golf Course in Chelsea last year. The well production is less than desirable in the area. So an existing small pond at the northeast corner of the golf course was enlarged and deepened, and a transfer line installed to pump water to the large irrigation pond at the southeast corner of the site last spring. In the fall we enlarged and deepened the irrigation pond to store significantly more water to manage drought periods. The excavation spoils were used to build mounding, new tees, and a large bunker in front of the sixth green. A rear tee was added in the hillside on hole #4 making a very dramatic tee shot over wetland and pond. A first phase of cart paths were also installed. The County would like to develop continuous cart paths.

We have also been doing a bunker and drainage renovation at Plum Brook Golf Course in Sterling Heights over the last two years. Bold bunkers with white sand have been added to provide drama and direction to the holes. That work will be finished next fall.

Harry Bowers, is still doing some work in Florida and has leads for new courses elsewhere. But, like most architects, we are not seeing much work in Michigan.
