MGN ON THE ROAD-MICHIGAN'S GOLF BOOK PUBLISHERS

When Sleeping Bear Press divided up into three companies a couple of years ago, Clock Tower Press was born. After a short period, two employees, Brett Marshall and Skip Dewall, decided to leave Clock Tower Press and go out on their own. We caught up with all of the parties last week and here is what is happening.

HARBOR LINKS PUBLISHING

Brett Marshall is the CEO of Harbor Links Publishing and former editor at Sleeping Bear Press and Clock Tower Press. Brett also served some time as the Executive Director of the GAM. He is excited about his company's first offering, "The History of the Southern Golf Association". The SGA is celebrating over 100 years of being an organization.
http://harborlinkspublishing.com

ANN ARBOR MEDIA GROUP

Skip Dewall, the past marketing guru of both Sleeping Bear Press and Clock Tower Press is now the head of Ann Arbor Media Group. AAMG's parent company, is Edwards Brothers, Inc., a century old company that was started by two brothers that taught law for the University of Michigan. One of the first products to be released is "Men on the Bag: The Caddies of Augusta National", by Ward Clayton. Clayton was the sports editor for the Augusta Chronicle from 1991-2000.

Dewall indicated that they would be bringing back to life some of golf's past masterpieces. One of the first under the heading of Vintage Golf Series Edition in O.B. Keeler's "Bobby Jones:Portrait of a Champion". All in all Skip Dewall is absolutely fired up about what his company will be bringing to golf readers in the years ahead.
http://www.edwardsbrothers.com

CLOCK TOWER PRESS

CEO Charles Gelman and Director of Marketing, David Griscom of Clock Tower Press were at the PGA Merchandise Show, celebrating one of their newest books. "Gene Sarazen and The Wonderful World of Golf", at the PGA Merchandise Show. The book is a great read as Shell's WWG producer, Al Barkow is no stranger to great story telling. Mary Ann Sarazen provided some great photos that chronicled this great first of a kind series. As you might expect, there are photos and stories of all the legendary golfers who participated in the series over its run.

You can buy the book on http://clocktowerpress.com, and you will be able to see Vanessa Bell's interview of Al Barkow and Mary Ann Sarazen in March on the Michigan Golfer Television Show.

THE GAYLORD SNOW MECCA-OTSEGO CLUB, TREETOPS, BEAVER CREEK AND GARLAND

Its called white gold and it provides much needed cash flow for these great Gaylord area resorts. We stopped by the Otsego Club and chatted with an upbeat Scott Chesley who was just heading out the door to close a deal on a condo. "Business is definitely up. We lost some ground in 2002 when we went through the auction process, but that has subsided since we decided to go our own way. Plus, we have had 100 families take advantage of our 'Test Drive the Otsego Club' promotion," said Chesley.

We checked out the new half-pipe and the new tube track location at Treetops and both were being utilized. Treetops seems to be paying closer attention to their winter business. We ran into Rick Smith who was doing some Srixon promotion at the PGA Merchandise show. And while we do not expect to see him in the half pipe real soon, he is optimistic about the direction Treetops is taking. "We have remodeled many of the rooms have a new registration center and have a host of other things on the drawing board", said Smith.

Larry Bowden, the CEO of Beaver Creek Resort, was at the PGA Show shopping around for his pro shop. Larry has been mining this white gold for years as his resort is always full of snowmobilers. He indicated that the snowmobile business was going great guns because of all the great snow Gaylord has. They got a record 6 feet in January. He also indicated that the Marsh Ridge Resort deal he was working on will not happen.

There was love in the air everywhere at Garland. Barry Owen and his real estate staff were loving the great business they had last year, as over 100 land parcels were sold. 140 cross country skiers loved the Gourmet Glide they experienced that morning. They enjoyed the 10K glide throughout beautiful Garland and the stops for freshly cooked trout cooked over a campfire, and other food stops along the way. The last stop was in The Great Room where hungry skiers were treated to tables ladened with great Garland food.

To top off this Valentine Weekend, Garland was host to another one of its fabulous Dr. Zhivago Nights. This is love and romance of the highest order. The evening includes great food, a sleigh ride through Garland, music, vintage wines and all the trimmings for a great romantic evening.

For more information on Zhivago Night, we encourage you to read this review by Hal Higdon, author of scores of books and an avid skier. http://www.halhigdon.com/slopes/garland.html

MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION-"THE HAIG REMEMBERS HIS 1933 RYDER CUP" AND "VANESSA BELL VISITS THE PGA MERCHANDISE SHOW"

THE HAIG REMEMBERS HIS 1933 RYDER CUP

This was a controversial tournament for "The Haig". The match played at Southport & Ainsdale, in front of 15,000 spectators was tied going into the final hole. At the time "The Haig" was in the presence of the Prince of Wales and hesitated to go to Denny Shute to apprise him of the score. Shute not realizing he could lay up with his putt, hit it firmly past the hole and missed coming back. Better yet, tune in and let Walter tell the story. http://michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/ryder/index.html

VANESSA BELL REPORTS ON THE PGA MERCHANDISE SHOW

Vanessa Bell, our Michigan Golfer reporter, took measure of this year's PGA Merchandise Show and brings back a report of fashion, new products and an overall feel for this years s show. http://michigangolfer.tv

NEWS FROM THE LONDON GOLF AND TRAVEL SHOW

Claudio and Terri Demarchi celebrated their 10th anniversary as hosts of the London Golf and Travel Show this past week. There were plenty of stories coming out of this year's rendition.

LPGA legend and Canadian Sandy Post provided the star power for the show as she demonstrated the technique used in her golf schools and also introduced her new line of golf clubs, Jazz Golf. http://sandypost.com. Walt Spivak was there touting his new FireRock GC http://firerockgolf.com which will open in June of this year. It is a Tom McBroom design, one on Canada's great designers. Doug Bell was there extolling the latest from his company. Osprey, the owner of Manistee National and the Medalist golf courses, have entered into agreement with owner Dave Smith of the Wilderness and Black Forest golf courses in Gaylord, to manage the courses. According to Bell, Mike Biber, owner of Osprey Management, will provide capital to improve and renovate these new holdings. Foremost in their minds is to market Tom Doak's Black Forest more effectively. Doak, has become an internationally famous golf architect with his latest work at Pacific Dunes and now New Zealand's Cape Kidnappers Resort. Rick Fabbri, of Lakeview Hills was on hand enticing people to visit their 36 hole golf resort and also chat about golfing Michigan's Thumb. Paul Beachnau, as he says, is "still handing out brochures after all these years". Gaylord, like other golf destinations, has had a down period. However, the success of "The Big Break" has brought new energy to the Gaylord Golf Mecca. They will be doing "The Big Break II" this July for a fall telecast. Bob Manning and his great photography was there along with the Flint CVB, the Doherty Hotel, Bay Valley Resort, Double JJ Resort, the Otsego Club, St. Ives, Lakewood Shores Resort, Thunder Bay Resort and other Michigan properties.

DOAK ON TOP DOWN UNDER

The latest issue of Golfweek is the stuff marketing plans are made of. New Zealand hot off staging the past two America's Cup, being the host of the Millennium Marathon, providing the land for The Lord of The Rings film trilogy, home the Maori featured actress Keisha Castle-Hughes in Oscar nominated film, "The Whale Rider" is now touting its latest star, Michigan's own Tom Doak. Tom Doak has designed another fabulous ocean course, Cape Kidnappers, on a portion of rugged coast on the north island of New Zealand. Golfweek send a team down under to capture the latest Doak magic and seemed to be running out of adjectives in writing about it.

Having spent a couple of weeks in New Zealand attending the 2000 America's Cup, my only thought is going back. We love the country and Doak's newest will give us yet another excuse for booking our return trip.

JACKSON GOLF SHOW-JACKSON GOLF DOME

Launce Avery, of the Jackson Area Golf Association, reports that Jackson will have its own show this year at the Jackson Golf Dome, located at 3600 Wayland Drive, Jackson. Show dates are February 27 and 28, with show hours being 4-8 on Friday and 10-8 on Saturday. For directions contact the facility at (517) 796-4653

COUNT DOWN TO THE RYDER CUP- THE 1933 MATCH

1933 Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club, Southport, England
Captains: Walter Hagen (US), J.H. Taylor (GB)
GB 6 1/2USA 5 1/2
The Ryder Cup started picking up a little steam as 15,000 spectators turned out for the 1933 match at Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club, Southport, England. This was the last Ryder Cup victory for Britain for the next 24 years. At this time neither team had won on the other team's soil. The 1933 match was a real cup hanger,as "the final singles match proved to be one of the most exciting finishes in Ryder Cup history. Britain's Syd Easterbrook and American Denny Shute were all square on the final green facing par putts of approximately 30 feet each. Easterbrook putted first and left his approach putt within tap-in range. Shute hit his first putt four feet past the hole and missed the comeback putt." The trophy went back to Britain and the series was tied at 2-2. It was also the last Ryder Cup that Samuel Ryder would see as he died in 1936.

ALBANESE & LUTZKE: VETERAN GOLF DESIGNERS START NEW FIRM

Paul Albanese and Chris Lutzke have admired each other's golf course design work for a long time. So much so, in fact, that they've decided to see what they can achieve together.

Their new company, Albanese and Lutzke Golf Course Architecture & Construction Management, has opened offices in Radford, Virginia and Clawson, Michigan. Previously, Albanese worked in Michigan for veteran golf architect Jerry Matthews before later becoming a partner in a firm with Michigan-based Ray Hearn. Meanwhile, Lutzke comes to his new endeavor after an association of nearly two decades with legendary architect Pete Dye.

"Chris and I have been part of great design and construction projects in many of the same parts of the country, and during that time we've become well acquainted with both each other and our courses, says Albanese. "We've found that our philosophies and goals mesh perfectly, which gave us the motivation to launch this new venture. Says Chris Lutzke, "Paul and I have had a chance to absorb a lot through our past experiences in the golf industry. As a result, we think now is the time to begin this new company, which will allow us to build the courses the golf industry wants and needs.

ANGELS CROSSING OPEN HOUSE SLATED FOR VICKSBURY THIS SATURDAY

Residents of southwest Michigan will get an opportunity to learn more about the new Angels Crossing Golf Club and housing project at a meeting Saturday, February 21 at the Vicksburg Administration Building. Club officials will be on hand to discuss all aspects of the development from 10 a.m. until noon.

"We're throwing open our doors to everyone in the area eager to find out more about what we're doing," says Jim Thompson, general manager of Angels Crossing. "In particular, we'll be focusing on the status of the golf and housing development." Thompson says all key project personnel will be on hand, including golf course architect Bruce Matthews III, who designed the 27-hole public golf course development, 18 holes of which will open in May of this year. Matthews will be joined at the open house by veteran golf course superintendent Roger Barton, Angels Crossing golf professional Mike Hill, and Jill Thompson, the realtor for the Angels Crossing housing development. Jim Thompson says other local civic, business and banking officials are also expected to attend.

"We're approaching the time of year when people start making decisions about such things as their golf and real estate needs for the coming year," says Thompson. "We're all excited about the golf courses Bruce has designed, but the housing development is also critical to both Vicksburg and us. We think Angels Crossing is going to be very desirable as a golf destination and a place to live."

The Vicksburg Administration Building is located at 301 S. Kalamazoo Avenue in Vicksburg. The Angels Crossing open house will take place in the boardroom and is open the public.

19th HOLE-GEORGE CARLIN STRIKES AGAIN

1. Ever wonder about those people who spend $2.00 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water?
Try spelling Evian backwards: NAIVE
2. Isn't making a smoking section in a restaurant like making a peeing section in the swimming pool?
3. Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery?
4. If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled?
5. Why do croutons come in airtight packages? Aren't they just stale bread to begin with?
6. Why is a person who plays the piano called a pianist but a person who drives a racecar not called a racist?
7. Why isn't the number 11 pronounced onety one?
8. If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed?
9. What hair color do they put on the driver's licenses of bald men?
10 I thought about how mothers feed their babies with tiny littleÊspoons and forks, so I wondered what do Chinese mothers use? Toothpicks?
11. Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to do, write to them? Why don't they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the mailmen can look for them while they deliver the mail?
12. If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?
13. Ever wonder what the speed of lightning would be if it didn't zigzag so much?
14. If a cow laughed, would milk come out of her nose?
15. Whatever happened to Preparations A through G?

GOLF QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"It was at Sleepy Hollow, following a Sunday round in the summer of 1960, where Spaght (Monroe "Monty" Spaght) had the brainchild that would become "Shell's Wonderful World of Golf". While having lunch, Spaght watched "All Star Golf" on televsion. This was the first made-for-television golf program.

Spaght, a sophisticated man of the world who played the saxophone, had a taste for gourmnet cusine and an eye for beautiful women, liked the idea of "All Star golf" but only as an idea-golf on television. He thought it could be much better produced, for one thing. Also having played golf all over the world he thought he could combine the game's international dispersion with a reminder of Shell Oil's worldwide presence." Quote taken from:" Gene Sarazen and Shell's Wonderful World of Golf", a new book by Al Barkow and Mary Ann Sarazen. Now available at Clock Tower Press http://clocktowerpress.com Look for an upcoming interview with authors Al Barkow and Mary Ann Sarazen on Michigan Golfer TV.
