MGN ON THE ROAD
Grand Rapids
Many of us will be attending the West Michigan Golf Show that starts today. This has been a solid show over the years and a real barometer of the upcoming season.

Toledo, OH
We dropped by the offices of Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates to see Quentin Lutz, the VP of Global Business Development. True to his title, Quentin was grabbing a flight that night to head out to the Munich Golf Show. Not only is Arthur Hills/Stever Forrest et.al hot in America, they are also picking up steam in Europe. They are getting rave reviews with their Quinta da Marinha Oitavos Golfe layout in Cascais, Portugal. Golf World said that the architects had "ruthlessly preserved" the wild environment. And that, "Layout is a brilliant test of golf." They are also hard a work in Gothenburg, Sweden building the Hills Golf Club.

Just think what it would be like to have the word Global on your business card, If I had started the Global Golfer 22 years ago instead of the Michigan Golfer, I could be putting out at Scott Base in Antarctica and reporting it to all the fine folks at Christ Church.

MICHIGAN GOLFER TV SHOW-LONDON GOLF SHOW
The Michigan Golfer visited the London Golf Show in early February to take the pulse of the Canadian golf market. Michigan was well represented with Garland, Thunder Bay Resort, Double JJ Ranch, Doherty Hotel, Flint Area CVB, Lakeview Hills Golf and Resort, Golf Manistee, Otsego Club and The Michigan Golfer on hand.

Congrats to Claudio and Terrie Demarch for a great show.

GOOGLE NAMED BRAND OF THE YEAR
In 2002, Google became synonymous in the public imagination with Internet search -- so much so that readers of Interbrand's BrandChannel.com site voted Google the brand of the year. The search company displaced last year's winner, Apple, and beat out Coke and Starbucks.

BrandChannel.com asked readers to rate brands on the impact they had on their lives in 2002. Out of 1,315 respondents, Google received 15 percent of the vote for the top spot, beating Apple's 14 percent share. Coca-Cola ranked No. 3 with 12 percent, followed by Starbucks with 11 percent.

Last year, Google ranked No. 4, garnering 10 percent of the vote for brand of the year.

HORNUNG'S AND THEIR KANGAROO KAGE
Hey Art, I thought I would follow up on you and Terry Moore's thoughts on the PGA Merchandise Show. I wanted to let you know that Hornung's got best new product of the show with their Kangaroo Kage. An article appeared in Golfweek Magazine to that effect.

KAY MCMAHON OF INNERFORM GOLF RECOGNIZED AS TOP TEACHER
Golf Magazine has recognized Kay McMahon, Director Of Innerform Golf, in the Top 475 Teachers, and in the region top 8 for Michigan, and the only one noted on the lakeshore in Southwest Michigan.

McMahon, the Director of Innerform Golf Academy in Saugatuck, Michigan, was quoted as saying, "I'm thrilled with such an honor and proud to be in the state of Michigan!" McMahon's past honors include election as the1995 LPGA National Teacher of the Year, recognition as a Top Teacher by 2001 Golf Magazine and 2001 Golf Digest Magazine, and LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Western Section Teacher of the Year in 1995, 1993, 1991, and 1990. OLYMPICS TALKING LIVE WEB, WIRELESS COVERAGE -- The International Olympic Committee is negotiating with the European Union over the possible broadcast of live images from the 2004 Olympics on the Internet and cell phones. IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies confirmed the negotiations to The Associated Press on Monday but gave no details. EU officials strongly favor the involvement of new media in broadcasting sports events. But for the 2004 Games, such deals could complicate arrangements with NBC, which has the TV rights for United States.

FOREST DUNES SELECTED IN TOP TEN YOU CAN PLAY
Forest Dunes Golf Club has been selected by Golf Magazine to its prestigious list of "Top 10 You Can Play" in America.

In a tranquil setting surrounded by eight-square miles of forested state land, former British Open Champion, Tom Weiskopf, designed this superb, traditional, modern classic for the ages. The course measures 7,104 yards from the tournament tees down to 5,097 from the forward tees. Even better, Forest Dunes has incorporated Junior Tees into the course design for kids to play. Holes from the kid's tees measure from 411 yards down to 94 yards.

The fifteen-acre practice facility is also adequately equipped to handle any golf shot. The facility features a duel-ended range, undulating teeing areas to practice different shots and short game, as well as a two-acre putting course.

Forest Dunes is a semi-private golf club with additional memberships coming soon. Similar to other national membership clubs around the country, Forest Dunes will allow limited public access during the membership build out period.

YOUNG AMERICANS GOLF GUIDE 2003:Junior Golf -The Game, the Player, Programs, Events & Competitions"

A copy of the above book hit my mail box this afternoon. E.A.Duval from IWantz Publishing of Grand Rapids is the author. The companion but barren website is http://www.youngamericansgolf.com At first blush, it seems to be a fine book to give to a Junior Golfer. While it seems to state the obvious, I harken back to my early days in golf and recalled that things were not so obvious then. The book has some nice tips on travel, getting ready for tournaments, rules, national junior programs, colleges and universities that specialize in golf, equipment and a nice section on terms and definitions. The book is $24.95 Good luck to yet another Michigan golf book author.

RED HAWK CELEBRATING ITS FIFTH BIRTHDAY
Red Hawk is entering it's 5th season of golf. We have made subtle improvements each season such as adding a new front (ladies) tee to our awesome 2nd hole as well as adding a fairway approach to our difficult par 3 14th hole. We have added new irrigation heads where needed, extended cart paths, and enlarged teeing areas. While other courses seem to be struggling in this economy, Red Hawk is thriving due mainly to the unbelievable job Art Hills did with the design as well as a superintendent and maintenance crew which is second to none. We are especially proud of being named "Best Service in the Midwest" in a golfer's poll last season as well as being named a top 5 Michigan course by three publications.

HOLE IN ONE CLUB
Our first hole in one of the year comes from John Clark of Farmington Hills, .On January 28, John holed out a nine iron on the 6th hole at Tangolunda Campo de Golf Club at Huatulco Oaxaca, Mexico. This mighty feat was witnessed by Alan DeRienmaker of Harbor Spring, MI.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"The hardest shot in golf is the 90-yard wedge, where the ball has to be played off a tree, bounce back into a bunker, hit a stone, bounce onto the green, roll to the cup, hit the pin and drop in the hole. That shot is so tough I've only made it once" Zeppo Marx

Dear Art,

Gull Lake View is requesting your participation in the 2003 “Places to Play” survey offered by Golf Digest. This survey rates golf courses based on their condition, service, pace of play and overall value. Stonehedge South and North were awarded 4 stars for the 2001-2002 season and Gull Lake View East & West and Bedford Valley each received 3 Omega stars. We could not have achieved this great accomplishment without the help of our loyal patrons. Please cast your vote by March 15, 2003 on www.golfdigest.com/ptp_reviews/ or through your Golf Digest subscription. We greatly appreciate your support.

Gull Lake View is looking forward to celebrating our 40th Anniversary in the golf business. We have many exciting opportunities this year for the nearby golf enthusiast. Our prime location in Augusta, Michigan, only one hour from Grand Rapids and Lansing, provides a wonderful opportunity to play 54 holes of golf in one day! A short two-hour drive from Chicago or Detroit allows for a great last minute golf vacation as well. So please join us this summer to celebrate our 40th year in the golf business.
