THE PIONEERING POWELL FAMILY
PGA Professional Powell and father honored at Orlando history center
Renee Powell is head PGA Professional at Clearview Golf Club, which her
father William designed, built, owned and operated.
American golf pioneers Renee Powell and her father, William Powell,
will be honored at a private reception Feb. 17 in Orlando, Fla., as The

with an adult education series, "African-Americans in Golf."
William Powell, an honorary member of the Northern Ohio PGA Section, is
the only African-American to design, build, own and operate a golf
course. Renee, a PGA of America and LPGA member, is the second of only
three African-American women to compete on the LPGA Tour.
CHARLIE SIFFORD TAKES HIS PLACE IN GOLF HISTORY
By Dave Anderson
Between puffs on a cigar, golfer Charlie Sifford compares his struggle
to that of another black man in another nation.
"It's like Nelson Mandela," he said in 1992, referring to the former
president of South Africa. "They kept him in jail 25 years but it didn't
break his determination. They couldn't break mine."
They know who "they" were - all those golf officials and tournament
sponsors who half a century ago didn't want a black man on the PGA Tour.
HISTORY OF AFRICAN AMERICAN GOLF
The History of African American's in Golf is a strange and winding tale
of racism, discrimination and segregation. Golf has always had an air
of mystique and the general population's perception saw it as the game
of the rich and famous. Well, African Americans have excelled in every
aspect of life and of course golf is no exception, but the
institutional segregation of courses, associations and country clubs made it
impossible for African Americans to display their talents and just as
important to earn a living. Until resent history African Americans were stuck
in the roles of caddies and country club staff. Oh, but times are a

obligations to let these black men play in the PGA tournaments. But by
standing up and taking a stance these men made significant in-roads and
gained empathy for the movement.
1950 - Ann Gregory wins the National UGA Tournament in Washington,
D.C.; she won a total of six championships of the seven tournaments that
1954 - Harold Dunovant turned pro and was one of the first black
golfers to attend the PGA Business School in Long Beach, California. He is
the head pro at Minorcas Golf Course in Winston Salem and the founder of
the National Black Golfers Hall of Fame.

"A heavy guilt rests upon us for what the whites of all nations have
done to the colored peoples. When we do good to them, it is not
benevolence--it is atonement."
