Boyne-The hammers have started up again. In the fall of 2001, we had the opportunity to do a show with Steve Kircher on the Boyne lifestyle. At that time, the new hotel was rising fasts, two weeks later all work had stopped. However, the funding is now secure and all seems right with the world. We chatted with Steve, VP of Golf Bernie Friedrich, GM Art Tebo and PR Julie Ard about the upcoming golf season. They have once again tied in free golf with lodging and it looks like another banner year and regained market share for Michigan's largest golf complex. We will carry the story and interview in the upcoming issuue of the Michigan Golfer and Michigan Golfer Television show.
Cadillac-The Cadillac CVB has lost a tremendously talented person in, Executive Director, Carol Potter. Carol has recently accepted a position as Executive Director of the Mountain Trails Foundation http://mountaintrails.org in Park City, Utah. Carol, who recently lost her daughter to cancer, is moving to the town that her daughter and then she fell in love with. Her daughter, Cammy, just missed being on the Olympic snowboard team and was a great skier, having skied all over the country. Carol was the marketing director for Caberfae for many years before she became head of the Cadillac CVB. She invested a lot of time and energy in promoting Cadillac golf to the rest of the state. Carol, is a good friend and we, Cadillac and Michigan will miss her ready smile and her awesome skills.

JACKSON GOLF SHOW-JACKSON GOLF DOME-Today

The trio of Whitcombe brothers were no match for Hagen, Sarazen and Smith, as the American team broke into an early lead that was never relinquished. Hagen, who competed for the final time, joined Sarazen for an easy 7-6 win over Alf Perry and Jack Busson. Hagen passed up his final match and finished his Ryder Cup career with a 7-1-1 record.

MICHIGAN GOLF HALL OF FAME TO RAFFLE RYDER CUP TICKETS
The Michigan Golf HOF committee, will be in booth #440 at the upcoming Michigan Golf Show.

KEN DEVINE BEGINS HIS LAST YEAR AS MICHIGAN PGA CEO
I totally missed this one, Ken Devine announced his retirement a few months ago and I must have been hiding under a Steve Smyers bunker somewhere. Ken took over the Michigan PGA in 1991 after Executive Director Tom Colucci and his gambling habits, brought the section's exchequer into a world of excessive red ink.
"You know its strange," said Devine, "I came in as Colucci was going out and I am going out at a time when he is gone." (Tom Colucci, past Michigan PGA Executive Director, was killed in an automobile accident a few weeks ago.)
Devine has been running the section since 1991 , and not only brought it back from financial disarray, but put the association back in its proper place as one of the best managed in the nation. He will leave the post just after the Ryder Cup. The association is looking for a successor now. Kevin Helms, long time assistant for Devine,is a front runner for the position.
"What better time for me to step down from the golf business than after the Ryder Cup?" Devine said.
HICKORY GOLF TOURNAMENTS IN VOGUE
Mike DeVries, golf architect of the Kingsley Club in Traverse City and the new Greywalls course to be opened in late fall at Marquette passes this along.
"Art, I wanted to let you know that the Hickory Open (3rd annual) will be at the Kingsley Club on June 25th-26th this year. It is a national open tournament -- 36 holes medal play, played with pre-1935 hickory clubs. Fred Muller, pro at Crystal Downs Country Club, is the two-time defending champion. "THE LITTLE BREAK"
The Perfect Golf Hole

There are many great holes in golf, but I have always wondered if there could be a perfect golf hole. A golf hole that tied all the elements together into a hole so great that it would pose a challenge for any golfer who dared to try to conquer it for the rest of time. A hole so great that it could silence any critic and make any true golfer travel vast distances just so she could say they played that single hole.
The perfect hole would be appealing to the eye. It would be so picturesque that the land would look untouched by the architect. The hole would flow perfectly with the rest of the land.
This hole would have a great element of fear. It would offer a dangerous risk. If the golfer successfully negotiates the risk while overcoming his fear, he shall be rewarded with a substantial advantage. Otherwise he may be punished with an unfortunate situation or worse, a penalty. Nothing gives a golfer more satisfaction than successfully dealing with a deep, daring bunker or a sparkling water hazard waiting to devour a poorly hit shot. On the contrary, almost nothing is more heart sinking that helplessly watching the ball fall in that hazard.
A very crucial element to this golf hole that is sometimes overlooked is playability. The ideal hole should allow all kinds of golfers to use their strengths to their advantage. It should also be playable to golfers of all skill levels. For a golf hole to be great it must challenge the advanced player and give the inexperienced golfer a chance to make a good score. This golf hole should allow everybody to have the same chance at the risk-reward shots.
One last part of this golf hole is strategy. It ties together the last two elements and is very important itself. On a great golf hole a golfer should have to plan ahead to use their strengths to their advantage. A player should also have to plan ahead in order to take advantage of the risk-reward situation.
Yet, if one really thinks about it, there is no such thing as a perfect golf hole. They have so many characteristics and so much variety that they would be impossible to compare. Golf holes are so unique--a fact that it is often overlooked. There isn't any possible perfection in golf holes, and the range of design options are limitless.
What if the only way to compose music was to emulate Mozart? We would be denied the music of many of the greatest of all time. Every composer and piece of music is different--that is what makes each unique. When composing there are some fundamentals to making a good piece, but there is a lot of imagination involved.
If there was only one way to design golf courses, we would be without hundreds of the greatest courses of all time. Different architects are unique in their tendencies and preferences, and they all make their courses unique. Unlike some sports, there isn't a specific design to the playing field that has to be executed by the designer. Due to this illimitable variety and the infinite kinds of golfers playing, golf has become one of the most popular games of all time.

Jesse decided he and his family should learn to golf after playing a computer golf game when he was six years old. After teaching himself to golf, he started taking lessons from Rudy Catal. This summer Jesse will compete in the Meijer Junior Players Tour for the second year. He is also interested in golf course design.
