DAILY DOSE OF DALY
===================
The one thing about John Daly, is that he always seems to be in the news. His latest problems, having Butch Harmon fire him as a student and then having his foursome, getting disqualified from the Arnold Palmer Invitational, made for a really bad day. However, as pointed out by the "John Daly at the Niagara Falls Gorge" video, that had an astounding 458 views since we put it up a couple of weeks ago, everybody still loves this guy. http://youtube.com/watch?v=pqCuFOsTVXU , his popularity is absolutely amazing.

7TH ANNUAL BETH MOFFAT MEMORIAL GOLF OUTING DATE SET
========================================================
The 7th Annual Beth Moffat Memorial Golf Outing is scheduled for May 3rd at the Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti. It is a four person scramble with an assortment of goodies for golfers and a price of $74.00. There is an additional request of golfers to donate to the Beth Moffat Scholarship Fund. You can find all about Beth, her promise, her desires, the goals she had obtained and those that were not, due to a tragic automobile accident that took her life, at their website. http://www.villalobos.biz/bmm/index.html

Don Moffat, Beth's father, was a colleague of mine at Eastern Michigan University. He worked there in the late 80's and early 90's and was a pleasant and very bright young man. He left EMU in 1991 to pursue other interests and it was a year later that his daughter was killed. The Moffat's have worked hard in preserving the memory of their daughter through the scholarships that have been awarded through their fund. To date, over a dozen students have received funding for college.

The sport of golf has a wonderful history in the area of fund raisers and other types of charity work. While the death of a loved one is obviously a tragic event in any one's life, a memorial golf tournament is a wonderful way to recall a life and have other individuals share in the knowledge of that person as well as contributing to a worthy student with a scholarship.

INTERNET SPORTS SALES CONTINUE TO RISE
=======================================
Using data which the National Sporting Goods Association has been gathering since 1999, NSGA has charted the purchases of sports equipment on the Internet and have seen it grown from 1.4% of the total equipment market in 1999 to 8.1% in 2006. In dollars, that's from $300 million to just less than $2 billion. Since 2000, this represents a 166% increase in Internet sports equipment purchases. In contrast, purchases of sports equipment in all channels rose only 14% in that same time period.

The data for sports footwear is similar. Purchases of sports footwear on the Internet have gone from 0.6% of purchases in all channels in 1999 to 6.3% in 2006; in dollars, from $73 million to slightly more than $1 billion. Since 2000, that is a 441% increase in Internet sports footwear purchases. Again, to contrast, purchases of sports footwear in all channels rose 35% from 2000 to 2006. No data on sports clothing purchases is available.

Are Internet purchases going to continue to rise? The trendlines in the accompanying chart suggest that consumers are likely to continue purchasing on the Internet and at a higher rate. At some point, it will level off. But when?

WE'VE GOT EMAIL
================
"I know that this is not your issue, however I would like to make a comment and don’t know were else to send this. I receive your newsletter on a regular basis and have for a number of years. My friends and I have been going to the golf show in Novi for a good number of years. In fact, we look forward to it every year. It seems like it is a passage of spring.

This year, I have to say how disappointed I was in the show. It lacked any new equipment what so ever. They didn’t even have any of the new balls out this year. Most of the equipment that was for sale was all of last year's stock and even stock equipment from 2006. Is this not a show to show off equipment for 2008? It was rare to see any new 2008 equipment. There were cars, motorcycle draws, and several other booths like Visions of Canada (for glasses) not related to golf in anyway shape or form. To say our group of people who attend was disappointed is an understatement."

Bernie Hotham, Windsor Ontario.

Editor's Note: Bernie, I will pass on your concerns to the powers that be, via this newsletter. However, in their defense, these are some tough times in the golf industry and everything and everybody seems to be cutting back. I agree with some of your assessments, but others can be explained. The Buick Open is celebrating 50 years, so it seemed to be very appropriate to have the cars there. But again, your letter has been heard and we want to keep our Canadian friends continuing to cross the border. Cheers, and a Tip of the Tam for your email.

GOLFWEEK'S NATIONAL PANEL OF RATERS ANNOUNCE 2008 U.S. COURSE RANKINGS
==========================================================================
In its March 8 issue, Golfweek published the 2008 Golfweek's Best Classic and Modern Courses lists, marking the twelfth year Golfweek has ranked the best Modern and Classic courses in the U.S. "Despite a slowdown in the golf development market, there's no shortage of quality with the new courses," said Bradley S. Klein, national director of Golfweek's Best Courses rating program.

Two of the six newcomers to the Golfweek's Best Modern Courses list are in the top 20. Sebonack Golf Club, No. 14, is a Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak design in Southampton, N.Y. And Chambers Bay, rated No. 17, in University Place, Wash., is a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design that already has been awarded the 2015 U.S. Open. "That's pretty impressive and justifies the cover story we devoted to Chambers Bay back on June 16, 2007," Klein said.

The Golfweek's Best annual issue identifies the best courses from two distinctly different eras - courses designed pre- and post-1960. The exclusive system acknowledges that before 1960, the year that separates Classic from Modern, most course designers relied on native contours for course features. After 1960, as Arnold Palmer and television combined to popularize the game, designers began to utilize high-tech engineering and advanced mechanical means to transform the landscape to suit their design.

The two top spots on the Classic list are repeats for the third year in a row, with the Alister MacKenzie-designed Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, Calif., keeping the No. 1 spot and the George Crump and Harry S. Colt-designed Pine Valley Golf Club in Pine Valley, N.J., ranking second. Rounding out the top five on the Classic list, in order: No. 3 Shinnecock Hills Golf Club (Southampton, N.Y.); Pebble Beach National Golf Links (Pebble Beach, Calif.); and Merion Golf Club (East), in Ardmore, Penn.

The top course on the Golfweek's Best Modern Courses list remains Sand Hills Golf Club in Mullen, Neb., designed by the team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. It is followed by the Tom Doak-designed Pacific Dunes in Bandon, Ore.; Whistling Straits (Straits) in Mosel, Wis.; Friar's Head (Baiting Hollow, N.Y.); and Pete Dye Golf Club (Bridgeport, W. Va.).
The criteria for evaluating the golf courses, and Golfweek's Best Classic, Modern, and a comprehensive state-by-state list, may be found at http://www.Golfweek.com.

WHERE LEGENDS HAVE WALKED; WHERE MEMORIES ARE BORN
========================================================
Oakland Hills Country Club's South Course will mark its diamond anniversary July 13, commemorating 90 years of having provided the setting for many of the game's most memorable championships and a worldwide showcase for its membership. A month later, the South Course celebrates the 90th anniversary of the season's final major, with the PGA Championship visiting for the third time.

If it's Major, It Must be Michigan

The 90th PGA Championship is the 12th major conducted in Michigan -- an even split of six U.S. Open and six PGA Championships. (See chart)
• When Oakland Hills Country Club hosted it first PGA Championship in 1972, the premier player of the era -- Jack Nicklaus -- was 32. When the 90th PGA Championship visits this August -- the third time the season's final major will be conducted on the South Course two-time defending Champion Tiger Woods, 32, will be in the field.
• Since 1991, the PGA Championship has featured the most top 100 world-ranked players and has attracted the largest international contingent of any U.S. major. Internationals have reaped a bonanza in PGA Championships at Oakland Hills -- South Africa's Gary Player hit perhaps one of his finest recovery shots to win in 1972, and Australian David Graham triumphed in 1979 after a three-hole playoff.

SWEETGRASS SELECTS DAVID DOUGLAS AS FIRST DIRECTOR OF GOLF
==============================================================
The Island Resort & Casino recently announced that David Douglas has been named Director of Golf at the new Sweetgrass Golf Club. A 22-year veteran of the golf industry and native of the area, Douglas brings a wealth of experience and local knowledge to the position.

With a grand opening tentatively scheduled for July 1, Douglas will oversee the day-to-day operations of the golf course, hiring and training employees and ordering merchandise. Starting from scratch, he’ll also be furnishing the pro shop with display units, arranging the food and beverage operation, and ordering signage for the course.

“It’s an honor to join Sweetgrass Golf Club and the Island Resort and I’m extremely excited about the opportunity in front of me,” says Douglas. “People in the community have been talking about this project for quite some time and the buzz continues to grow.”

A graduate of the San Diego Golf Academy, Douglas began his career as the assistant golf professional at the Butte des Morts Golf Club in Appleton, Wisc., before spending the last 18 years as the club professional at Terrace Bluff Golf Club in nearby Gladstone, Mich.

“We had the pleasure of interviewing quite a few highly qualified applicants during our search for a Director of Golf,” says Island Resort & Casino General Manager Tom McChesney. “Dave excelled throughout the process and we’re anxious to have him on our team.”

Sweetgrass features beautifully crafted rockwork, cedar posts and fescue-lined fairways throughout the design. In addition to the island green, the course boasts a pair of breathtaking waterfalls to greet golfers as they walk up the ninth and 18th holes to a uniquely shared green. The course will stretch to approximately 7,300 yards from the tips, but shrinks to near 5,000 yards thanks to multiple teeing areas to accommodate every player's unique skill level.
