POHL, CROSBY, ANDERSON HIESTAND, SYRON AND SAYLOR ELECTED TO MICHIGAN GOLF HALL OF FAME

A broad spectrum of golf was represented in the 2004 election to the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame: touring professionals Dan Pohl and Elaine Crosby, top amateur Mary Jane Anderson Hiestand, public course owner and supporter Lloyd Syron and longtime Detroit Free Press golf writer Jack Saylor who was elected posthumously.

Michigan Golf Foundation co-chairman Bob McMasters said the induction ceremony for the five will be May 16 at Indianwood Golf and Country Club in Lake Orion.

Pohl, two-time winner of the Michigan Amateur championship, was renowned as one of the biggest hitters in golf and won twice on the PGA Tour including the prestigious Colonial National Invitation. He lost the 1982 Masters Tournament to Craig Stadler in a playoff after a brilliant 10-under-par weekend finish of 67-67 that included a Masters record four hole streak in the Saturday round. Pohl eagled the par 5 13th hole, sank his approach shot on the par 4 14th for another eagle and then birdied the 15th and 16th holes.

Pohl also tied for the 1985 Greater Hartford Open but lost in a playoff to Phil Blackmar.

Mt. Pleasant native Pohl played 421 tournaments in 20-plus years on the PGA Tour and made the cut in 300 of them and had 70 top ten finishes. He played on the 1987 Ryder Cup team and won the Vardon Trophy for best stroke average that year.

Pohl has had a number injuries, surgery on both knees, his back and neck, but currently is working hard to qualify for the Champions Tour when he turns 50 next year.

Crosby didn't start playing golf until she was 20 as tennis had been her game. But while a student at the University of Michigan the Jackson native picked up golf, made the varsity team from 1978-80, won the Michigan Womens' Amateur and then turned professional. She won on the Futures Tour and joined the LPGA Tour in 1985 and had two victories and numerous top five finishes including a second in the Oldsmobile Classic and three runner-ups at the Lady Keystone Open, a tournament she won in 1994.

Crosby was so well-regarded by her peers that she served on the Executive Committee from 1992-94 and was elected president of the LPGA Tournament Division in 1994. Crosby currently is a leading teacher and has a school for women at Crystal Mountain Resort.

Anderson Hiestand was voted Michigan Woman Player of the Decade in 2000 by the Golf Association of Michigan. She has been a winner on every amateur level starting with two championship years at Clarkston High School, 1975-76, three State Amateur titles, 1990, 1995 and 2000 and the State Public Links championship in 1999.

Anderson Hiestand dominated the Women’s District Golf Association with seven match play and eight stroke play championships. Nationally she qualified three times for the U.S. Womens' Open and 14 times for the U.S. Mid-Amateur championship and made match play each year. Syron couldn’t help but spend his life in golf – his father, Frank Syron, was a golf professional and his parents bought Elizabeth Lake Golf & Country Club in 1941, changed the name to Pontiac Country Club and turned it into a mecca for public golfers.

Lloyd started out caddying, went to Notre Dame and won the 1957 Michigan Amateur. He played in three NCAA golf championships and then settled into the family business. Pontiac CC is a family affair and they've been a major supporter of public golf in southeast Michigan. Lloyd coached the Pontiac Catholic High School golf team for 11 years and both Waterford high schools use the Syron course as their home course. The Frank Syron Memorial Tournament has been a stroke play fixture for the state's best publinxers every Fourth of July weekend since 1969.

Saylor, who passed away last November, enlivened the local, state and national golf scene with his deft touch at the keyboard, first at a typewriter, then at a computer and always the piano where he always drew a crowd, whether it was the stately Carolina Inn at Pinehurst, N.C., or at the Mission Inn in Carmel, California, where Clint Eastwood dropped in. Known as much for his colorful outfits as his colorful writing, Saylor started at the Pontiac Press, then the Detroit Times and found a home at the Free Press for 43 years, 30 of them covering golf. He covered all the sports, including the Detroit Pistons, Jud Heathcote's Michigan State basketball and Notre Dame football but golf was No. 1. Saylor was at home as much with a golf club in his hands as a pen and notebook and as diligent in finding the right sentence as he was in finding the right yardage. He played from coast to coast and in 1990 covered the British Open at St. Andrews but also managed to work his way around other great Scottish courses and relayed his impressions to Free Press readers.

The non-profit Michigan Golf Foundation, umbrella organization for the Hall of Fame, will sell chances for two tickets to the Sept. 14-19 Ryder Cup at this week's Golf Show at the Novi Expo Center. The PGA of America and Oakland Hills Country Club, host to the Ryder Cup, have permitted some local charities to raffle two tickets as a way of raising funds for the charity.

The U.S. finally broke through to victory on foreign soil as they defeated the British team, 8-4. Walter Hagen served as non playing captain and Sam Snead made his rookie appearance. "The U.S. built a 2-1-1 lead after the first-day foursomes and headed into the second day that featured eight singles matches contested in pouring rain through most of the competition. Midway through the final day, Henry Cotton managed a 5 and 3 victory over Tony Manero. That produced a 4-4 tie that gave the British momentary hope. The singles matches, contested over 36 holes, however, featured an "intermission." By lunch, the Americans had the advantage in three of the last four singles and Percy Alliss retained the final bid for the British with a 1-up lead over Gene Sarazen after 18 holes. Alliss gradually built his lead to three holes before Sarazen rallied and squared the match after 14 holes. At the par-3 15th, Alliss' tee shot found the green. Sarazen hit an errant tee shot that bounced back off a spectator and on to the green. Sarazen didn't miss a cue and holed his putt for a birdie and held on for a 1-up victory.

The U.S. picked up the other three matches to finish 8-4. The matches were scheduled for November 1939 at Ponte Vedra, Florida, but the war intervened.

ART HILLS TO UTILIZE MICHIGAN GOLF SHOW FOR BOOK SIGNING

Arthur Hills will sign his new book "The Works of Art" at the Michigan Golf Show. This will be his second signing, as Hills and design partner Steve Forrest, along with golf writer Michael Patrick Shiels, launched "The Works of Art" at a media reception during the PGA Show in Orlando.

"The Works of Art" is a significant and colorful presentation of the more than 200 new golf courses Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates have created throughout a 40-year career in golf course architecture.

NEW COURSE OPENINGS

New course openings are starting to surface. Angels Crossing in Vicksburg, Hawk's Eye in Bellaire, College Field Club in Okemos, Hawk's Ridge in Grayling and FireRock in London, Ontario; are all scheduled to open sometime this year. Hawk's Eye and Hawk's Ridge are Canadian John Robinson designs. Angels Crossing is from Bruce Matthews III, College Field Club is from Old Course Design and FireRock is a Thomas McBroom work.

Also, the old Port Huron Golf Club, that had the Coit/Allison team design it in and around 1910 has been renovated by Old Course Design.

H.S. Colt and C.H. Allison, who contributed the work to Country Club of Detroit and Plum Hollow, were known for their work at The Cloister, the famous Georgia resort. They reworked the original Plantation nine there and then created their own nine, the Seaside. Bobby Jones had indicated that the Seaside nine was "the best nine that he had ever seen."

H.S. Colt was also known for his work at Pine Valley where he worked with George Crump and his home course at Sunningdale, England.

BUICK OPEN DONATES A RECORD $617,000 TO CHARITY

The Buick Open announced that it has donated a record $617,000 to Southeastern Michigan charities from proceeds raised through the 2003 tournament.

Among the charities who received donations from the 2003 Buick Open are Easter Seals of Genesee County, which raises additional funds through the sale of Buick Open tickets; the American Red Cross Genesee-Lapeer Chapter, which provides transportation services for the tournament; Whaley Children's Center, which handles the "will-call" booth at the tournament; and the Genesee County regional office of the American Lung Association of Michigan, which provides volunteers to operate the Buick Open telephone center.

Buick also announced that the purse for the 2004 Buick Open, scheduled for July 26-August 1 at Warwick Hills, will be a record $4.5 million. LPGA GOLF TIP OF THE WEEK

Fairway woods (metals) versus long irons-everything has changed! It is definitely not a fair fight any longer. Fairway woods are in the bags of LPGA and Champions Tour players and increasing in popularity on the PGA Tour. Some of you are probably thinking at this very moment, "I am not a female or a senior." Do not let your pride interfere with you shooting your best scores. As long as a small woman such as Annika Sorenstam can beat you, there is no shame! Seven-, 9- and 11- woods should become your friends.

Fairway woods are built with more loft and a greater clubhead mass, which combine to produce a club that is easier to hit farther and straighter. The soles on these clubs are also wider, which means you are less likely to hit them fat. Remember, added loft equals a higher trajectory, which in turn makes it easier to hold greens. Give fairway woods a chance. I think you will like the results.
