MGN ON THE ROAD
Brimley-Snowmobiles have replaced golf carts, but the parking lot was still filled with people trying their luck in the casino at Bay Mills Resort and Casino. Judy Mason, now the head professional at Wild Bluff, was selecting her summer staff and getting ready for another season at the course. This year, Wild Bluff will once again be hosting the Bay Mills Open August 18-24. The tournament will be carried live by the Golf Channel.

Gaylord-Mike Husby is looking at another busy year. He takes over The Loon this year as one of the new owners. The clubhouse is getting repainted, new furniture is coming in and the pro shop will soon be filled with the latest Loon fashions. Mike will still administer the Bay Mills Open this year, but most of his work will focus on The Loon. The Loon will hold two tournaments this year Michigan Senior PGA Championship on July 28-29 and the Atlas Matches on September 20-21.

In addition to the new tournaments, Mike has partnered up with Michaywe and the Lake to provide some great golf packages and Pine Cone Accommodations to provide the upscale lodging.

Lansing-Going into this weekends's Michigan Golf Show, the golf show biz in Michigan has been going very well. WMGS was a hit and Laurie McCann of Novi Expo indicated that the numbers were up in Lansng. The chipping, driving and putting contests were well attended and a junior golfer eliminated about 150 golfers in the putting contest. However, he clutched at the $10,000 putt and missed by a considerable margin.

GRAND TRAVERSE RESORT AND SPA TO BE PURCHASED BY TRAVERSE BAY ENTERTAINMENT
The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians today announced the purchase of the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa from KSL Recreation, Inc. The transaction is expected to closeat the end of March.

Already among the largest employers in northern Michigan, this transaction is expected to catapult the Grand Traverse Band into a leadership position among Indian gaming operations nationally, as well as among Michigan tourist destinations. It is believed to be the first time an Indian tribe has purchased a full-service resort in lieu of building its own.

"This is an historic day for the Grand Traverse Band and its members," said Grand Traverse Band Tribal Chairman Robert Kewaygoshkum. "On behalf of our membership, I am pleased with this announcement, thankful that we have secured this world-class resort, and very enthused about our future here in the Grand Traverse area."

Ultimately, the Grand Traverse Band hopes to shape the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa into an unparalleled international, year-round family destination. "Having worked in or visited virtually all the major commercial and Indian gaming operations and hotels nationwide, I can say that what this property brings us -- in concert with our vision - is unprecedented," noted Traverse Bay Entertainment Chief Executive Officer Jeff Livingston. "The Grand Traverse Resort is the largest in the Midwest, and one of the top 20 in the United States. We will team up with an already great staff to bring the 'Traverse Bay Experience' to this superb facility." Traverse Bay Entertainment is the economic development arm of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians.

MICHIGAN TOURISM INDUSTRY NEWS AND MORE
Michigan is now able to track all click-thrus from http://michigan.org to private sector web sites. In April, Travel Michigan will begin emailing the quarterly Links Analysis Reports to all properties and organizations such as CVBs, hotels, events and attractions that offer an external link on our site.

This report will track the activity of external links on michigan.org and will list the monthly totals of "exposureso/oo and "clickso/oo to your property. Exposures are defined as the total number of times your link was displayed to visitors on the Travel Michigan web site. Clicks are the number of times those visitors clicked on the link and were transferred to your web site.
To receive the report, you must have included an email address on your Property Update form. This is the next phase in the implementation of our Lure & Link, Click & Count strategy for http://michigan.org. So far, the strategy seems to be paying off. In January, consumers clicked from the Travel Michigan web site to private sector web sites 102,000 times ^ that,s an average of more than 3,000 click-thrus a day. Meanwhile, user sessions at http://michigan.org for January were up 84% over January 2002.

For more information about the Links Analysis Report, please contact GaryPlatte at (517) 335-1877.

DOAK TO OFFER INTERNSHIPS IN GOLF DESIGN

Tom Doak has founded a program for aspiring golf course architects in golf design through a landscape architecture or turf management curriculum.

Doak intends to award at least two internships per year with flexib starting and ending dates depending on personal circumstances. An internship with Tom Doak will consist of three parts: a month of activity in the Renaissance home office in Traverse City, four to six weeks work on the site of one of his current projects, and at least two weeks of travel with Doak or a senior design associate to see projects in the planning phase, including the chance to see and play some of the great golf courses built in the past century.

Interested applicants should submit a one-page application (graphic or narrative), which includes their personal information, academic and golf background, and any other information pertinent to why the applicant should be chosen for the internship. Applicants should also include a second one-page depiction of their favorite golf hole >from their home course, and outline their reasons for choosing it. (The "home course" rule is intended to discourage the selection of famous holes whose merits have been well chronicled by others.) The first internship award will be made no later than April 1, 2003, so interested applicants should respond by March 15. Please send all applications to Renaissance Golf Design at 3600 Veterans Drive, Traverse City, Mich., 49684. For more information please visit or call (231) 941-7499.
