MGN ON THE ROAD
Novi-Michigan Golf Show
This is the biggie, the one that everybody points to, the granddaddy of them all, The Michigan Golf Show. This is the first year that the show is in their new home, the Rock Financial Showcase. We stopped by Thursday night while vendors set up their booths. There is plenty of new space and plenty of parking. Laurie McCann, show director, says they are at capacity, even with 20% more space in their new digs.

Directions http://www.rockfinancialshowplace.com/attend/directions.php
Time: Fri: 2 pm - 9 pm, Sat: 9 am - 8 pm, Sun: 10 am - 5

We hope to see you there. Please stop by our booth, we 204 & 206, and say hello.

Ann Arbor-
Free Press legendary reporter, Bob Talbert, used to start off his week with a column entitled "Monday Moanin" That was certainly the case when I read a headline on the front page of the Ann Arbor News this Monday, "City's golf courses struggling to get out of financial rough". The story, by Tom Gantert, went on to detail the travail of Huron Hills and Leslie Park. both city owned courses. In the past decade the courses have gone from 80,120 rounds in 1999 to 43,878 this past year. Several reasons were cited as a cause for the drop, namely; higher prices, the competition of 12 new courses that have opened since 1999 and a 14% overall decrease in rounds played in America during that time.

MICHIGAN GOLFER INTERNET TELEVISION CONTINUES TO ATTRACT NEW VIEWERS
In the 13 month period ending at December 15, 2005, the over 200 shows now on Michigan Golfer Television drew 411,254 viewers. In the first two and a half months of 2006, YTD viewership is up 26%. Similar increases have been noted in the company's other three channels, The Michigan Runner Television Show http://michiganrunner.tv, The Michigan Skier Television Show http://michiganskier.tv and The Michigan Travel Television Show http://michigantravel.tv

The increase of new media has contributed to the drop in circulation of newspapers and magazines, just as cell phone use in cars have cut down the time that people listen to the radio in cars. While network television has decreased there has been dramatic increases in cable, online video and video podcasts.

MOORE MUSINGS
by Terry Moore
Too bad Ford Motor Company had to drop its sponsorship of the Doral PGA TOUR event. The last two years itıs commanded a stellar field (this year nine out of the top 10 players in the world), put a nice spotlight on hot Ford cars, and provided terrific television drama. And even though heıs a Buick guy, you canıt beat Tiger Woods being the two-time defending champion. Still when a company is struggling mightily with its core business, itıs hard for its executives in midst of layoffs and plant closings to be seen enjoying themselves in Miami and on a plush golf course. Ford also introduced a new clever ad campaign with magicians Penn & Teller with Johnny Miller. In hindsight, Iım wondering if Ford could have saved its high profile Doral sponsorship by jettisoning the Senior Players Championship (which is now moving to Baltimore) in Dearborn as well as dropping the Phil Mickelson sponsorship (which is now in its last few weeks)? But maybe the PGA TOUR forced its hand. I found it iinteresting that Fordıs go-to golf executive Steve Lyons didnıt make his usual appearance on national television on Sunday. Instead, Fordıs regional executive for Florida was interviewed by NBC-TVŠ.One more thing, Camilo Villegas who finished tied for second and was a fan favorite at Doral is a name some West Michigan golfers were already familiar with. The long-hitting Villegas (then a collegiate player for Florida) attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open several years ago at a local qualifier at Wuskowhan Players Club near Holland, Mich. Not surprisingly, he was medalist.

RESORT AND GOLF MARKETING TO REPRESENT TRAVERSE CITY CVB
Dave Richards and Kevin Frisch, of Resort and Golf Marketing, have been retained to represent the Traverse City CVB in many of their markets, primarily golf. The company has long been identified with representing many of the A list golf and resort clients in the state.

According to John Jessup, of the Traverse City CVB, their new president, Brad R. Van Dommelen, wanted to do more with their Traverse City golf product. Obviously, R&GM offered the type of services that would help them toward their goal. You can see the rest of John's remarks at http://michigangolfer.tv/2006shows/golfcoursepreviews/traversecity/

STADLER, COUPLES, MICKELSON AND NORTH AT ING PAR-3 SHOOTOUT
Andy North was so excited about winning the ING Par-3 Shootout last year that he promised to return the next day to defend his title. Instead, North will wait until June 26 to return to the renowned par-3 Threetops Course at Treetops Resort, where heıll take on Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples and ING Par-3 Shootout newcomer Craig Stadler.

Always one of the most viewer-friendly golf telecasts of the year, the ING Par-3 Shootout will air same-day tape-delayed on ESPN Monday, June 26 and Tuesday, June 27.

"To have these four guys compete in any format is fabulous. Itıs great entertainment," said Rick Smith, owner and managing partner of Treetops Resort. "But put them in an arena where they are not only battling for $540,000, but firing 72 times for $1,000,000, now thatıs exciting Taken and edited from a Treetops release

BOOK REVIEW: "WHO'S AFRAID OF A BIG BLACK MAN", by Charles Barkley Okay, so "Who's Afraid of a Big Black Man" is not your normal golf book fare, but Barkley has always been someone who can get your attention. I thought it was a terrific read and had a nice intro from Mike Wilbon of the Washington Post and P.T.I. The book explores the topic of racism through the eyes of people who have had success in America through a variety of interviews. Barkley frames his own thinking against the backdrop of thoughts from President Clinton, Samuel L. Jackson,Barack Obama, George Lopez, Rabbi Steven Ledger, Ice Cube, Morgan Freeman, Robert Johnson, Peter Guber, Jesse Jackson and Tiger Woods.

In this interview with Tiger, Barkley got Tiger to comment on an unexpected emotional high he got during his first Masters presentation ceremony.

"So there's this closing ceremony," Tiger explained, "You go on the putting green where it takes place, and I look up and theyıre all there in their white outfits. The cooks, the staff, attendants, everybody. They're all black. Each one of them came out onto the balcony and watched it. I look back and I start getting choked up just thinking about it. They touched me in a really powerful way. I started thinking about everything these people had faced in life, all the ugliness, all the prejudice and all the obstacles they had to deal with....As I walked out that day, I said,ı Dad, look up there in that clubhouse. Just look over there.' and my Dad starting getting choked up. 'Son,' he said, 'take this in.' And I said, ' Dad, that's what I have been doing. I have been looking over there the entire time.'"

The book is published by Riverhead Books http://riverheadbooks.com
