MGN ON THE ROAD
Novi-The Michigan Golf Show kicks off today at the Novi Expo Center.
Be there or be square as the latest edition of America's largest consumer golf
show opens the 2005 golf season. Laurie McCann, reports that upwards of 30,000
golfers will attend the show and visit the 450 vendors in the next three days.
Golfers can test the newest equipment, check out the latest courses, get some
incredible golf show deals and dare I say it, yes, you can even stop by our
booth, say hello and get a free hug.

Boyne Falls
Things are starting to heat up in Boyne Country as the Mountain Grand Lodge and
Avalanche Bay readies for a May opening. Julie Ard, Director of Communications
for Boyne, is getting used to hard hat hair days giving people tours of the
facility. We taped a show with Julie as we toured the facility with Michigan
Skier Television host, Jim Neff and his wife Ann. The show will be up later this
month on our Michigan Travel Television site.

Gaylord
The lush fairways of the Golf Mecca are still a foot and a half below that white
gold that brings snowmobilers, snowboarders and skiers north. Paul Beachnau, Ex.
Director of the CVB is expecting a great year. We bumped in to him at Diana's,
the popular breakfast and lunch hangout. Don White, the PGA professional of
Marsh Ridge, was holding court at the Logmark, a local watering hole at the
Otsego Club. Don indicated that he is going to be concentrating on building
up his golf school at the resort. Scott Chesley, the real estate guru of the
north introduced us to the new cabins they are building at the Otsego Club.
Trisha Chandler was beaming as their resort was filled for the week by hundreds
of EMU students taking classes there.

Dave Bebble, superintendent and Wes Morgan, Assistant professional at The Loon,
are looking for another strong year at the course. The golf show business this
year has been good for them. Bernice Ramsay, one of the new owners of the Beaver
Creek Resort was holding down the resort while her husband was at the Ford Field
RV Show. They have been busy sprucing up the place since their purchase of it
from Larry Bowden. Bowden will be returning from his Florida digs for the
Michigan Golf Show. Steve Helmer, head professional at The Natural, indicated
that the Midland Show was well attended. Pine Cone Accommodations has continued
to be a booking monster up north. Sandra Snook has worked hard to create and
develop lodging packages for ski and golf in the Gaylord area. Kevin McKinley,
assistant pro at Treetops, was in full ski gear as he entertained the Snow
Gophers from Chicago. Treetops is doing some interesting things on the ski side
to attract more skiers.

Grayling
This year's theme in Grayling is Golf and Canoeing. Bob Koutnik, of Fox Run is
one of the people behind the movement. Irene Geiss-Wilson, Director of the
Grayling CVB, championed the marketing idea. She was a little distracted
during our visit, as her husband will be shipping out to Iraq this week.

GOLF COURSE DEVELOPMENT SLOW-DOWN CONTINUES IN 2004
The number of new courses being built has decreased every year since 2000,
according to data compiled by the National Golf Foundation (NGF). In 2004, there
were 150.5 course openings and 62.5 verified closures (in 18-hole equivalents),
for a net gain of 88 courses, representing a net increase of approximately
one-half of one percent. The 2005 forecast is for 150-160 18-hole equivalent
course openings. In contrast, nearly 400 18-hole equivalents opened in 2000.

Including course openings and closings, the total number of U.S. golf facilities
stands at 16,057, breaking the 16,000 mark for the first time. Adjusting for
9-hole and 18-hole-plus facilities, there were 14,988 18-hole equivalents at
yearıs end.

Of the new courses, 102.5 are open to the public and 48 are private. Real
estate-related courses accounted for 59% of new development in 2004. Real
estate has consistently driven 40 to 60% of new course development and is
expected to continue to do so. However, the overall number of new real
estate-related courses is lower than in the 1990s.

NGF also tracks the development pipeline of courses that are in planning or
under construction. As of December 31, 2004, there were 320 18-hole equivalents
under construction; 410 that have begun the in-planning phase; and another 261
that have been proposed (pre-planning stage).

New Golfers in the Bunker
In the grass, put a tee about l inch above the toe of the club and another l
inch forward. Swing the club back and through, sweeping the grass, from one
tee to the other. Then, put a ball 2 inches in front of club on the grass and
do the same thing as if the ball were not there. Do this a few times, then, go
into the bunker to practice and do the same thing (including tees). Sweep the
sand the same as the grass, swinging the club back and through.

5TH ANNUAL WENDY'S CHARITY CLASSIC LPGA PRO-AM SETS DATE
Nearly 30 LPGA Tour Professionals will once again tee it up at the Country Club
of Jackson this summer to help raise money for the Dave Thomas Foundation and
adoption programs specifically in Michigan and northern Ohio. Hosted by
Jackson's own LPGA Tour veteran Elaine Crosby, this pro-am has raised over a
half million dollars for adoption in four years. Each year, Crosby invites her
talented and friendly LPGA peers to come to Jackson to help support the cause
and give over a hundred amateurs that rare chance to play with a pro. This
year's tournament will be held Monday, July 11.

I can't believe what I read in MGN last week. The idea of somebody having to
pay to be a photo assistant makes me sick. Photo assistants should be paid,
not have to pay. This is the same kind of logic Runner's World is using in
giving a t-shirt to people writing race summaries rather than paying the going
rate for a publication and publisher of their size.
