MGN ON THE ROAD

Midland
On Saturday morning, the Midland Golf Show opens at the Holiday Inn
Conference Center.

This will mark the end of the Michigan golf show season. The show dates
decreased from 14 to 10 days this year, as the Mt. Pleasant show was
called off and the Midland show was scheduled for one day.

Novi

Laurie McCann, of the Michigan Golf Show, had another smile on her face
this week. After a successful show at Lansing, the early numbers
indicated an increase of attendance at this past week's show.

Most all those asked had basked in the nice turnout of attendees.
Collectively, they were sure the golf season was going to be a good one.

Jim Dewling's son almost holed out at $25,000 chip shot at the show. He
had earlier won a trip to Florida while competing the Golf Channel's
Pitch, Putt and Drive. He won the trip by winning his age group at the
Treetops tournament.

Peter Allen, of Hornung's indicated the Saturday night vendors party was
well done with dinner and a comedy jam.

MICHIGAN GOLFER TV --GOLF SCHOOLS AND ACADEMIES
http://michigangolfer.tv
The Michigan Golfer cameras turned up at three of the Midwest's best golf
schools to create this show. We visited with Jason Jenkins of the Jim
McLean School at the Grand Traverse Resort, Scott Wilson of the highly
acclaimed Crystal Mountain Golf School and then with Mike Hulse of the
United States Golf Academy. Three great golf schools in one great show.

LOST LINKS-AUGUSTA A MERE SHADOW OF PAST GLORY?

Golf enthusiasts who hang on The Masters' every drive, chip, and putt
might not realize that Augusta National Golf Club, the annual tournament's
revered site, has been drastically changed from its original design - and
not at all for the better.

So asserts golf historian Daniel Wexler in his new book, Lost Links:
Forgotten Treasures of Golf's Golden Age ($45.00 from Clock Tower Press).
The 240-page volume is Wexler's second on lost courses.
"The simple fact is," notes Wexler, a former golf pro, "that while
Augusta's initial hole-routing plan remains largely intact, the present
course bears little resemblance to its spectacular original. It has been
methodically transformed into a less strategic, less exciting, distinctly
modern affair."

Lost Links gets to the historical heart of over 70 classic courses that
have disappeared or have been dramatically altered from their original
designs. Lavishly illustrated with course diagrams and archival
photographs, the book builds on its sister volume to provide a thorough
view of an American golfing landscape long ago demolished in the name of
population growth and economic progress.

MICHIGAN SKIER TV http://michiganskier.tv
"Relive the season on TV: Once the ski season comes to a close, you can
visit all the action again on the Web's first and only Internet ski
television program, "Michigan Skier TV." The beauty of this new media is
you can watch shows from the last two seasons 24/7/365 because the
Internet is always on, and you're not restricted to an arbitrary broadcast
schedule. "

YOOPERS AND HOOTERS

Hi Art,

"The National Golf Association Hooters Tour
http://www.ngahooterstour.com has
chosen Fox Hills Resort as a site of the 2003 (and 2004) tour of the
Men's NGA tournament. I thought that perhaps there might be some Michigan
golfers who want to take the ferry across the lake or drive the U.P. to
attend the tour. The dates are July 7-13th. The 'Firecracker' Pro-Am is
on Wednesday, 7/9/03 sponsored by Naturally Fresh Foods."

JOHN BEBOW UPDATE
Hello everyone,
So far, John has been very industrious during his 8 day run in Kuwait - 5
stories and counting. If you've missed any of them, you can always go to
http://www.detnews.com, find the "search" box with the little magnifying
glass, type in "John Bebow," click on and it will bring up his stories
with the most current first.

John was very glad to get all of your messages. In his words: "All the
support from friends is overwhelming."

I'm afraid his comfy days in Kuwait City are now over. As of today, he is
officially embedded with the Marines. I spoke to him on Sunday, and he
anticipated that this would happen by today. John said that after a
week's stay in Kuwait City, he felt that he "knew his way around" the
place. I reminded him not to get too comfortable.

If you didn't read his story about the Sheik, you'll get a big chuckle if
you do. John said that his reporter friends didn't believe him about his
"afternoon with the Sheik" until they all ran into the Sheik in a
restaurant lobby. The man greeted John with open arms and a kiss on each
cheek, while the other reporters' jaws dropped to the floor. You KNOW
that John reveled in that moment!

John is very glad that he had a week to acclamate to the desert climate
and to get his bearings before embedding with the marines. As I mentioned
before, he will be in with a supply unit. In his most recent email to me,
he said that the supply unit will not be making supply runs in the middle
of battle, and that the chances were good that he would be safely tucked
well behind the action. He told me to "breathe easy." (riiiight!)

I received a call from Tarek Hamada today, John's editor at the paper,
who told me that John was now safely embedded with the Marines. Tarek
said that John "sounded fine," and kept talking about how dusty everything
is with the sand storms. The dust could be a big issue with the fancy
equipment that he has. We included saran wrap with his supplies so that
he could wrap
the computer in it whenever he was not using it.

That's all for now, folks.

Be well,
Monica Bebow

CALDERONE FARMS ENTERS CHAPTER 11

Another casualty of the times, Calderone Farms, located near Jackson,
filed for Chapter 11 the last day of February. Calderone Farms opened a
couple of years ago, but originally missed an earlier opening when a major
storm hit and created extensive damage on the course. To make matters
worse, the following spring was very cool, thus not allowing the ground to
heal propertly from the storm. In addition, while the course got
excellent reviews, it did not have a clubhouse or proshop to operate out
of.
Bill Newcomb was the architect and is still involved in the day to day
operation of the course.
