MGN ON THE ROAD
Sarnia
Last week, we crossed the Blue Water Bridge with our radio dialed in to
CHOK AM 1070. Tom Gibson, host of Par Excellance a Sarnia based golf
radio show, will debut this year's program on Friday mornings from
10:00-11:00 starting on April 7. For the 3rd consecutive year, Michigan
Golf News will be featured on the show.

The Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic will be held this year July 10-16
at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio. The tournament
started in 1984 at Glengarry Country Club (presently Stone Oak Country
Club) until 1988 when it moved to Highland Meadows Golf Club. Since that
time the purse has changed from $175,000 to over a million dollars.
It is really the only place close by, where you can see a complete LPGA
tournament. There are two events in Michigan, The Wendy's Classic at
the Country Club of Jackson in Jackson and the 3rd Annual Greater Grand
Rapids Charity Pro Am at The Highlainds in Grand Rapids where you can
see LPGA pros.

The Boynes
Cathal O'Sullivan of Boyne, Ireland and Mike Chumbler of Boyne,
Michigan got together during the Michigan Golf Show to chat about their
respective Boynes. The two Boynes have much in common with great golf and
great fishing being at the top of the list. The interview also brings
out the fact that Michigan golf pioneer and Boyne founder, Everett
Kircher, fished the Boyne River on one of his many international fishing
trips.

MOORE MUSINGS
by Terry Moore
Every high school and college golf coach should get a videotape of last
Sundayıs final round telecast of the Bay Hill Invitational when Greg
Owen on the penultimate hole made that disastrous three-putt from
three-feet. Talk about an instructional video! Making the first putt would
have essentially sealed his first PGA TOUR win with a two-shot lead with
one hole to go. Heck, even when he missed the first putt he would have a
shot up on Rod Pampling so long as he canned the 18-incher coming back.
But sadly after missing that first putt, he hurried the second and it
ignominiously lipped out. All of a sudden, Owen is now tied for the lead
and his mind is scattered. Then amazingly he gathers himself and almost
makes fifteen footer for par on the last hole. But alas it too lips
out, allowing Pampling to win by a shot. But going back to the 17th green,
Owen violated one of the ironclad rules of Tour putting fundamentals:
No matter what happens, do not get out of oneıs putting routine. Owens
afterwards said, ³.to throw away a shot like that after the hard work
you've done all week is just stupid. That's what I've done.² As Rod
Pampling summed up, ³Itıs a cruel game.² Coaches wanting to remind their
players of the costly effects of hurried and careless putting need only
show them last Sundayıs sad events on the 17th hole.
Today marks the second round of the Players Championship in Ponte
Vedra, Fl. In recent telecasts, the TOUR and NBC bombarded viewers with a
host of highlights from previous tournaments. As I observed at the time,
I believe the all-time most-unlikely-player-ever-to-win-again would be
Craig Perks, the 2002 Champion. In the 2002 Players, Perks had that
phenomenal finish where he chipped in for eagle on 16, one-putted for
birdie on 17, and chipped-in for par on 18one putt on his last three
holes. Since his 2002 victory, Perks has neither won nor has he even
finished in the top-10 of any TOUR event. Last year, he finished 206th on the
money list. This year he has yet to make a cut. Thankfully for the 29
year-old Perks, heıs still exempt on Tour though next year.

SUBTLE THINGS KEEP PLAYERS FROM BEING A MAJOR
The argument is the same every spring.
The Players Championship has a great golf course that the U.S.
television audience knows as well as any. The field is considered the strongest
and deepest of the year, one that is not bogged down by amateur
hopefuls, club pros or Charles Coody. The TPC at Sawgrass delivers drama like
few other stages in golf.
Clearly, it certainly has all the ingredients of a major champions

THE FIRST BILLION MILE DRIVE?
This summer, at the behest of University of Windsor professor Nataliya
Hearn, a Russian astronaut will hit the longest golf drive ever-off the
international space station. The gold plated ball will orbit Earth for
two to four years before burning up in the atmosphere and travel a
billion or so miles."
