The Boynes
Cathal O'Sullivan of Boyne, Ireland and Mike Chumbler of Boyne,
Michigan got together during the Michigan Golf Show to chat about their
respective Boynes. The two Boynes have much in common with great golf and
great fishing being at the top of the list. The interview also brings
out the fact that Michigan golf pioneer and Boyne founder, Everett
Kircher, fished the Boyne River on one of his many international fishing
trips.

SHANTY CREEK'S NEW OWNERS WANT TO RESTORE GLORY:
Missouri oil company subsidiary buys bankrupt Shanty Creek in northern
Michigan from Comerica.
Joel J. Smith / The Detroit News
Shanty Creek Resort and Club in northern Michigan has been sold to an
independent oil company in Missouri with experience managing ski and
golf resorts. Trinidad Resort and Club, a subsidiary of Apex Oil Co.,
bought the resort last week from Detroit-based Comerica Inc., which assumed
ownership when the bank foreclosed on Shanty Creek's $20.3 million
mortgage two years ago. Financial terms of the sale were not disclosed.
Apex will not comment on the purchase until all details are finalized,
Lindsay Southwell, Shanty Creek's marketing coordinator, said Monday.
But Comerica spokesman Wayne J. Mielke confirmed the bank no longer owns
the property.
"It's officially sold," Mielke said Monday. "We're glad the deal has
been finalized. We're in the banking business, not the resort business.
It's now in really good hands with new owners that have a lot of
experience in resort management."
Suburban St. Louis-based Apex Oil once owned the popular Copper
Mountain Ski Resort in Colorado. The oil company owned and operated Copper
Mountain from 1981 until 1997, when Apex sold the resort to Intrawest
Corp., Apex owner Paul "Tony" Novelly currently sits on the board of
Intrawest, which has its headquarters in Vancouver, British Columbia.
In addition to wholesale sales and distribution of petroleum products,
Apex operations include numerous commercial and residential real estate
developments, such as St. Albans, an upscale residential community
outside St. Louis with two championship golf courses.
Southwell said the new owners plan to re-establish Shanty Creek as the
top resort of northern Michigan and look forward to accomplishing that
goal.
Shanty Creek covers 4,500 acres and employs 650 workers in Bellaire,
northeast of Traverse City, making the resort the biggest employer in
Antrim County.
Comerica and its subsidiary, VRB Corp, had been trying to sell the
facility for more than a year. The bank kept the resort running with a
management firm while looking for a buyer.
Comerica began foreclosure proceedings on the owners, Go Forward
Limited Partnership and LaVanway Capital and Trade Corp., in August 2004 when
the group defaulted on the mortgage payments. The principal owners of
the two companies were Thomas LaVanway of Charlevoix and former Shanty
Creek CEO Terry Schieber.
The pair ran into difficulties making payments in 2003 and 2004 because
of the slow economy and unfavorable weather.
Shanty Creek opened in 1962, followed by Schuss Mountain nearby in
1968. In 1986, the two resorts merged into a 4,500-acre resort with 49 ski
runs, four championship 18-hole golf courses, cross country trails,
biking runs and hiking trails. The complex also has three distinct
villages with hotels, restaurants and a conference center.
