TOP 10 MICHIGAN GOLF SHOWS ON YOU TUBE

Last May, we began to put many of our GLSP shows up on You Tube. Before doing this, we had put up over a thousand shows on our "regular" channels, Michigan Golfer http://michigangolfer.tv , Michigan Skier http://michiganskier.tv, Michigan Travel http://michigantravel.tv , Michigan Runner http://michiganrunner.tv and Running Canada http://runningcanada.tv . While the traffic to You Tube does not an any way equal the traffic we have on our other sites, it does have its merits. It is easier to put up a show, it is user friendly for the viewer, you can create instant "networks" with the use of a show's key words, is easier for viewers to find a show we have done and it counts the times that a show has played. With some of the new google analytics http://www.google.com/analytics/ we will be able to track where the show is being watched.

Since last May, we have put up 450 shows on You Tube and have this week passed a 100,000 viewers. Our traffic on our other sites has been appreciable more than that, but again, as a publisher, I like it because a client, reporter or producer can see the impact of their work.

Larry Bowden, new owner of Marsh Ridge, has been one of the pillars of the Gaylord Golf Mecca for 15 years. He became a member when they opened up The Natural 15 years ago. A few years ago, Bowden sold Beaver Creek Resort and picked up some of the lodging portion of Marsh Ridge, which he began to turn into condos. This year, Bowden completed the purchase of the hotel, restaurant and golf course at Marsh Ridge. Collectively, he now has two courses and some serious lodging to offer golfers. Treetops Preview
Last winter, I had Kevin McKinley, the Director of Golf and Skiing and Tish Jankowski, Treetops Director of Marketing, into a Sports Marketing class I was teaching through Eastern Michigan University. The students enjoyed their presentation for a variety of reasons, but mostly for the creative thinking that was involved with a number of Treetops projects, two of them being, The Amazing Race and the Treetops Par 3 Amateur Shootout. These events were created to create a more local identity with Gaylord and up north golfers and skiers, as for years, Treetops had relied on the national identity it had achieved with the Rick Smith Golf Academy and the Treetops Par 3 Shootouts.

Having just completed another successful edition of the Amazing Race, McKinley now lays out the summer's activities for their golf market. In this show, he comments on the Rick Smith Golf Academy, the Judy Mason Ladies Golf School, the Gene Bone Couples School and their three major tournaments, The Broken Club Opener, the Treetops Amateur Par 3 Shootout and the Pepsi Fall Charity Invitational. True North
We have seen a number of golf properties change hand over the past couple of years, most notably, The Otsego Club being purchased by the Osprey Management group. Larry Bowden, purchased Marsh Ridge after selling Beaver Creek Resort, Rick Babbitt, who bought Black Bear and has done wondrous things the past couple of years and now John Hover. who has purchased True North.

True North is a very exciting property north of Harbor Springs. The excitement comes from the fertile mind of Jim Engh, one of the 21st Century's most gifted golf architects. Engh's first Michigan project was at Tullymore, which has made many Top whatever lists, both state and nationally. At True North, he had a hillier canvas to produce his second Michigan masterpiece and he did not waste the opportunity. True North, certainly has landed a place in my Top 10 Wow List. I started off one morning to find four or five holes to videotape for a project I was working on with GM, Dave Mocini. By the time I was done, I had videotaped almost every hole, it was that sensational. THE MASTERS....by Terry Moore
=====================================
A good friend is headed to the Masters next week for his inaugural and eagerly awaited visit to Augusta National GC. For him the anticipation is akin to being a six-year-old on Christmas Eve. He can’t wait for it all to arrive. We spoke the other day and he asked for some advice and guidance on handling his first Masters. I told him I’d be glad to help. Desperate for a column, I’m also sharing this advice with you.

Prepare: Not only give some thought to your packing but also to the event itself. In the days ahead, read all of the national golf magazines’ printed or online preview sections on the Masters and get a renewed sense of its history and traditions. And check out the Augusta Chronicle (the local newspaper) online for its unsurpassed and award-winning coverage of the Masters starting with this Sunday’s preview section. Best of all, read some past Masters essays by the game’s esteemed man of letters, Herbert Warren Wind.

What to bring: Check out the weather forecast but have several options for rain and shine. Definitely pack a good rainsuit, Gore-Tex golf shoes, umbrella and small set of binoculars. At the risk of sounding like an odd duck, I don’t mind if it rains during the tournament so long as it’s not heavy and not a threatening thunderstorm. There’s something special about watching the Masters and its noble competitors in a light rainfall and how it quiets and transforms the tournament in a way I can’t really explain. Yet I do know having quality rainwear makes it all possible and tolerable. But it’s usually sunny and often summer-like hot in Augusta next week so bring along the sun block, lip balm, wide-brim hat and sunglasses. And dress like you’re privileged to play a round at Augusta National without calling to mind Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack.

Arriving at the course: Although the inclination is to rush out (note: walk don’t ever run at the Masters) to the course and start drinking it all in, it’s often advisable first to get your shopping out of the way. Yes, shop for the standard Masters logo clothing items but also consider some commemorative items to recall your first Masters visit. Also, give some thought to a few gift items for next Christmas. (I remember once being in a check-out line behind a Japanese patron and he bought several thousand dollars of Masters neckties as presents. (Today, I imagine he’s the Prime Minister.) Finally, simply use the free checkstands for storing your purchases.

Tackling the course: This is an easy one for a practice round but more complicated beginning Thursday. For a practice round, you simply walk the entire course and take your time doing it, stopping to watch the action along the way. Remember you’re there not only to witness stellar shot-making but as importantly to relish the pristine condition and the azalea-and-dogwood-beauty and magnificence of Augusta National itself. Here’s a prediction: You’ll say, “I can’t believe how hilly and rolling the course is. Television just flattens it out.” And be sure to check out the clubhouse, the practice area, the par-three course, and the main scoreboard.

Watching the tournament: On Thursday and Friday you have a full field and long days to watch plenty of golf. Grab a pairing sheet and if you want to watch some favorite players then plan your day around them. I still recommend doing some walking on the front and back nines but also taking advantage of the “observation stands” that afford viewing of several holes. Let the action come to you instead of chasing it around the course. Armed with a pairing sheet, spectator guide, and binoculars, you’ll sit in comfort—in the shade for pale Yankees—and let the colorful parade of players pass by.
Appreciate the details: The Masters is lauded, rightfully so, for the attention to the small stuff and its lofty standards of excellence. So take note of the many so-called little items that make it an extra special experience: the reasonable and non-gouging prices for food and refreshments; the lack of commercial signage and brand logos; the quality of the restrooms; the shaded picnic areas amid towering pines; the litter-free grounds and “Please” on the green waste bins; the expert hole marshalling and the ever-vigilant yet congenial security officials; the commemorative plaques and markers; the on-course and freely accessed telephone areas, to mention only a few. And to me, it’s an absolute dream to be in a non-cell phone, non-camera haven where knowledgeable patrons from across the globe and with proper manners and etiquette observe golf being played at its highest level. (Am I now sounding like our parents?)

Well, I could go on but the internet is not spacious and vast enough to contain all of the many facets and magic of the Masters and Augusta National. I’ll leave you with this parting and most fitting summation by the late Lionel Hebert: “This is the only course I know where you choke when come in the gate.”

The Michigan Golfer ended its print distribution with the Sep/Oct 2003 Issue. However, we have continue to put fresh issues on line and now have 75 past issues at http://michigangolfer.com/#pastissues . This past year, April 2007-March 31 2008, we tracked 126,544 Unique Visitors
and 620,744 Pageviews.

*The Michigan Golfer is now using a new software, Advanced Web Statistics 6.6, supplied by our ISP provider, Online Technologies of
Ann Arbor. It has been a good news bad news change. The good news is that the software gives a clearer indication of how many people are visiting our sites and reading or viewing our content. The bad news, is that the numbers we have been using for the past six years have been impacted substantially by this change. For example, last year, using our old software, we would have reported 858,044 MORE pageviews for the year. The difference is that a new category called, "Not Viewed Traffic" has been introduced into the mix. This traffic included, traffic generated by robots, worms, or replies with special HTTP status codes. That traffic has now been factored out.

For those of you that remember when "hits" were the way to measure internet traffic, that figure would be 3,397,044 this past year for the Michigan Golfer.

Now on the horizon is the new Google Analytics software, which will most likely be utilized more on the video side of things. Our clients want more information about how popular their YouTube videos are and where their viewers are coming from. They have a new video analytics tool called YouTube Insight. We are now studying that software and hope to incorporate that into our reporting as well.

Following up on on the theme of video traffic, Advanced Web Statistics 6.6, has also applied its measurement for videos that we put up that are not on You Tube. We have only had a couple of months watching the traffic and have observed the same phenomenon . We are waiting to get a few more months of traffic under our belts, before we roll out those new figures to our clients and viewers.

STENNETT TO HEAD NEW HOGAN FOUNDATION

The newly-formed Ben Hogan Foundation (www.benhoganfoundation.org) has hired its first full-time executive: Robert Stennett, former director of the F-22 fighter’s supply chain program at Lockheed Martin.

"This is an opportunity of a lifetime for me," says Stennett, who is leaving the aerospace industry at the peak of his career to head the six-month-old philanthropy. "Mr. Hogan was my childhood hero, and he has a legacy that I feel really strongly about."

Stennett will be responsible for overall fundraising and cultivating affiliations with corporations and such logical partners as the PGA Tour. "Our goals are pretty lofty," Stennett admits. "While we begin with a national focus, our intent is to grow into an international foundation."

MICHIGAN PLAYER'S TOUR TO: $1,000.00 GUARANTEED FIRST PLACE PRIZE MONEY

The Michigan Player's Tour will pay out a guaranteed minimum of $1,000.00 to the winner of each Tour event conducted during the 2008 season. “By establishing a guaranteed minimum first place check, the Tour is in better position to compete with other tours around the country," notes Tour Director Ken Carter. FROM THE VAULT-KALAMAZOO COUNTRY CLUB

It may not be the most scenic or challenging course around, but Kalamazoo Country Club has its own subtle charm that makes one want to keep coming back for more. First time players often make the mistake of looking over the entire scorecard instead of playing the course one hole at a time. That first glance can set one's mouth to watering in anticipation of birdie putt after birdie putt. That doesn't happen despite KCC's modest yardage of 6,388 when played from the tips to par of 71.

KCC is a throwback to the days of classic courses, back to when players were required to hit fades as well as draws instead of simply overpowering a course. KCC can be overpowered, but it doesn't happen often. Too much power can cause problems. Golf is a mental game, and that is never more apparent than at Kalamazoo Country Club.

The course became a reality in 1909 when the 75 charter members purchased the original land from the Albert White farm. The original budget for the course was $15,315, which included board and care of horses. The first nine holes were opened for play in 1910. While under construction, the members played their golf on a four-hole temporary course. In 1922, additional land was purchased and a second nine was constructed and put into play in 1923. Tom Bendelow, who designed the famous Medinah No. 3, is credited with the original design of KCC.

Golf was the only game at the country club for the first 40 years of the club's existence. In 1949, the club decided to become a full family operation and to remain open on a year round basis. A swimming pool was built and was followed by tennis courts and platform tennis courts.For a number of years, the club operated a toboggan run and a ski area with a rope tow.

In 1959, more land was purchased for the construction of a third nine, an executive layout, which has become a popular addition, especially at crowded times for use by golfers of all ages. Over the course of time, KCC has been played in many different ways. The present alignment of holes was started about 1952. Since then, the original 18 holes have remained basically the same, although there have been alterations and reroutings. For instance, the fourth hole was once a par five. A land purchase allowed for a change and it became a challenging par four.A new green was built for the par five fifth to make the hole play longer and because the original green had a problem of retaining moisture. The addition of the tennis courts dictated a change in the playing of the 13th hole.

Overall, though, KCC has been a pretty stable lace. There have been five greens superintendents and nine head golf professionals.John McCamley was the first superintendent -- they were known as greenskeepers back then. He was followed by Sylvester Dustin, John Dustin, Roy Peck and present superintendent John Fulling.

George Knox was the club's first head professional. He was succeeded in order by William Watson, Thomas Morris, Morris Wells, Andy Robertson, Frank Kennett, George Wells, Walter Biber and Dick Stewart, the current golf manager.

Sylvester Dustin left KCC in 1921 to go to Grand Rapids and build Cascades Country Club. Wells, who designed the first nine holes at Klinger Lake Country Club in Sturgis, went to Cascades with Dustin.

Life has generally been good at KCC, but the club has weathered its share of storms. The Depression years of 1930-33 were trying. The club was hit hard and many members were forced to resign, leaving only a small nucleus to carry on, but they managed to survive and the club flourished. In 1949, when the board of directors wanted to winterize the club for year round operation, many members again resigned in protest. But through a cooperative effort by the membership, work went on, improvements were made and the club continued to flourish.

There was another crisis in the mid 1980s when a plan to purchase land to enable the club to lengthen and redesign the 11th hole was tied to a proposal to tear down the old clubhouse and swimming pool and rebuild. Again there were resignations, but the club went forward and the new clubhouse construction has proven a good investment.

There is still some controversy about the 11th hole, which had to be redone a second time, but by and large the club weathered the storm magnificently. The latest change at the course was to kill the fairways and replace them with bent grass.

No one really knew what to expect, but under the leadership of Stewart and Fulling, the work went ahead with a smooth transition. There were a few grumbles, but the majority of members today are extremely pleased with the transformation. Last fall, Fulling and Stewart embarked on a plan to expand and improve the practice area. That will be unveiled this year. The work on the practice area required some changes in the executive nine, including the building of one complete new green, but that, too, is seen to have enhanced that course.

Because it has always been a forward-thinking run course and kept in perfect condition from a playing as well as esthetic standpoint, KCC remains popular with the membership as well as guests.

The course annually hosts a West Michigan PGA one-day tournament and the field is always one of the largest of the season.KCC volunteers its facilities to host Kalamazoo city tournaments for the men's and women's golf associations, and these, too, are among the most popular in terms of participation. Perhaps the highlight tournament of each summer in Kalamazoo is the club's own Invitational, a scratch two-man better ball competition. The Invitational was born in 1954 after several KCC members were turned down from another club's best ball event.Members George Zupanic, Larry Halleck, Dudley Cutler, Tyler Riggin, Henry Kennedy and Harry Rapley are responsible for the Invitational coming into existence. Rapley is still involved with the tournament each summer.

The tournament has become a tradition, drawing some of the best players from across Michigan and nationally. Many former state amateur champions, including the likes of Chuck Kocsis, Steve Maddalena, Melvin (Bud) Stevens, and Bill Newcomb have participated as well as college stars such as Gary Hallberg, Rick Ferhr, Dan Pohl, Jack Nicklaus Jr. and Davis Love III before turning professional.

While Hallberg, Fehr, Pohl and Love have made good livings in the professional ranks, none won the Invitational. That's because KCC, though appearing inviting has hidden teeth. Though the course is relatively short -- all the par fives are reachable in two, some with iron second shots -- accuracy is a premium. A little off line is costly. Better to be really wild. There's a chance for recovery for shots that are way off the mark. Power hitters can get in trouble by hitting the ball too far. In addition to the many trees, KCC's rough and hilly, rolling fairways reward position more than power. The greens are not easy to read, and though not overly large, if the approach is not in the right quadrant, three-putts are not uncommon. KCC is a course for the thinking player.

Signature Event: Invitational Better Ball Championship
Toughest Holes: 4th, long par four, dogleg right. Out of bounds to the right. Takes a good drive to make the corner, then a 7, 8 or 9 iron (if the drive is perfect) to a green, well-protected by sand bunkers. 16th, long par four, long drivers can reach bottom of hill, others will have downhill lie with shot of 160 to 140 yards to green on top of another hill. It's difficult to judge the exact distance of the second shot and getting approach shot close to hole is rare.

Two women were playing golf. One teed off and watched in horror as her ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole. The ball hit one of the men. He immediately clasped his hands together at his groin, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony.
