MIKE MCCAFFERTY IS TEED OFF
=============================
From time to time, I have used this column to chronicle the life of my son, Michael. He has been an interesting kid to watch. He was cited for his work at Eastern Michigan University and there, started the AYU Quartet that, among other things opened for Soupy Sales http://youtube.com/watch?v=3m_GAVXTzF4 .

For the past decade, he has been on the West Coast making a living as an actor, writer, singer, producer, teacher and director.

On television, he has appeared in the Invisible Man, ER, Six Feet Under, West Wing and a number of memorable commercials ( remember that car that got blown up, sent high in the sky, and then returned to earth with a bang? That was Mike in the car). He has appeared on the large screen having been in the films, Idiocracy, National Treasure II, and will soon appear in the upcoming Clint Eastwood film, "The Changeling". Also in the film, but alas not in his scene, is Angeline Jolie.

For GLSP, he played the part of Walter Hagen in the Ryder Cup series http://michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/ryder/ we ran four years ago. He now returns, producing a new Internet series, "Teed Off" http://www.youtube.com/user/teedofftheseries This is the second Internet series for Mike, who also stars in the "IT Room" http://itroom.com a Dell sponsored show that pairs him up with sportscaster, Jim Lampley.

Hopefully, "Teed Off" will give you a laugh or two, I know it did for me. But then again, I am his father. Thanks for our indulgence. Cheers.

EARLY MASTERS WEEK NOTEBOOK...By Terry Moore
=============================================
On Tuesday when I arrived at Augusta National, one of the first places I wanted to check out was the new sitting area on the hillside overlooking the 16th hole. After some storm-damaged trees were removed, this large grassy area now affords wonderful elevated views of not only the 16th green but also views of the 15th fairway and green, the 17th tee and also the par-three 6th green. The area will further lend an amphitheatre atmosphere and drama to the 16th hole.

Also visiting the sitting area were a couple from Santiago, Chile, making their second trip to the Masters. A “clubhouse guest” of the tournament, the gentleman was representing the Chile Golf Association and shared some tidbits about his South American country. A country of 13 million people, Chile is only one-fourth as populous an Argentina which boasts the reigning U.S. Open champion, Angel Cabrera, and the fast-rising Andres Romero who won in New Orleans. Chile only has one bona fide public golf course but 58 private and/or resort courses (including one “course” located the driest deserts in world where players use mats to hit shots and putt on oiled sandy greens.) However, efforts are in progress to encourage more public and junior golf in Chile. One private university in Santiago has started a degree program in golf instruction while the R & A has agreed to lend instructional support and teaching pros to the Chilean Golf Association.

A former headliner of the West Michigan Golf Show—sports psychologist Dr. Bob Winters-- was nicely commended by one of his longtime “students” playing in his first Masters this week. Virginia Tech University’s Drew Weaver earned his way into the tournament by winning the British Amateur last summer, becoming the first American in 28 years to win the event. Anyway, Weaver credited “Dr.Bob” for being a “huge help.” Weaver said Winters “really kind of turned my game around when I was struggling in junior golf. I had a couple of sessions and started playing great and have worked with him ever since.” Winters now works out of Orlando at Champions Gate.

The incomparable coverage of the Masters by the Augusta Chronicle included an article about local resident Bill Bauerle who used to work at Rackham GC in Royal Oak for head pro Lou Powers. Bauerle has in his possession, as a gift from Powers, a vintage wooden shaft putter with Horton Smith’s name inscribed on the heel. Although there’s no way to verify the claim with Smith and Powers now deceased, the putter could well be the one Smith won the inaugural Masters in 1934 or maybe the one in his bag for his second title in 1936. Horton Smith became the head pro at Detroit GC and was a close friend of Powers, a former Michigan PGA President. It’s possible that Smith gave the putter to Powers as a gift or included it as part of a merchandise exchange according to Baurerle.

Masters chairman Billy Payne continues to make positive and forward-thinking decisions about the tournament. This year juniors—ages 8 to16—will be admitted free to the tournament beginning yesterday and throughout the weekend so long as they’re accompanied by a badge-carrying adult patron. Kudos to Payne and Augusta National for this simple, inspirational, and powerful “growing the game’ initiative.

TREETOPS RESORT EARNS GOLF MAGAZINE'S SILVER MEDAL RESORT STATUS
====================================================================
For the eighth consecutive time, Treetops Resort i was named a Silver Medal Resort by GOLF Magazine in theirApril 2008 issue.

"Maintaining our status as a Silver Medal Resort with GOLF Magazine continues to solidify Treetops' position as one of the top golf resort destinations in the country," said Rick Smith, the resort's owner and managing partner and the architect who created three of the resort's five courses. "The quality and variety of golf at Treetops is quite possibly the best collection of golf found anywhere and to be recognized along side some of golf's finest destinations is a true honor."

MARKETING GOLF COULD BE FOUND IN WEB VIDEO
By David Lieberman, USA TODAY Friday April 4. 2008
============================================
You don't need a pan and a stream in California to join the next gold rush. A video camera, computer and high-speed Internet connection will do.

A vast array of professional and semiprofessional producers are starting to use those tools to create ad-friendly entertainment and news videos expressly for the Web. The goal is to dramatically change people's video-viewing habits — and cash in on a potentially enormous business opportunity.

"It's like the early days of cable," says former Viacom executive Herb Scannell, now CEO of Internet video investment and support firm Next New Networks. "We're inventing new business models, new talent and new programming models."

Editor's Note: The Michigan Golfer and Michigan Runner web video television channels were launched in March of 2001, making GLSP the creator of the world's first Internet Television Network. Today, we have put up over a thousand shows on our five channels and we closing in on 500 shows now residing on You Tube.
