MASTERS THOUGHTS-By Terry Moore
=================================
The story is well known by now. Before embarking for a long international flight to the Middle East, Gary Player left an encouraging voice mail last Saturday night for Trevor Immelman, fellow South African native and the third round leader of the Masters. (At a junior golf event when he was only five-years-old, Immelman was first introduced to Player.) A veritable mentor for the 28-year-old Immelman, the three-time Masters champion told Trevor he believed in him and that Trevor needed to believe in himself. Player also told him to keep his eye on his putts an extra second to quiet his head so as to avoid “peeking.” Finally, Player advised Immelman to just go out there on Sunday and “be strong through adversity,” because adversity would surely arrive during the final round. (Off the course, Immelman had already overcome adversity, battling back from a stomach parasite episode a year ago and from surgery to remove a benign tumor four months ago.)

24 hours later, defending Masters champion Zack Johnson helped Trevor Immelman slip on the coveted green jacket for winning the 2008 Masters at eight-under 280, three shots better than Tiger Woods. Immelman held or shared the lead all four rounds, the first player to accomplish the feat since Seve Ballesteros in 1980.

The preceding is all true and has been reported. What follows is a figment of imagination.

Later that evening following the traditional champion’s dinner inside the Augusta National clubhouse, Immelman leaves a series of voice mails to Gary Player and selected others. Edited transcripts of these voice mails by Immelman have been obtained and authorized for release.

Voice mail left for Gary Player:

Immelman: Mr. Player, I know you’re somewhere over the Atlantic probably headed for Dubai, but I can’t thank you enough for being so kind and considerate to leave me that thoughtful and positive message last evening. I played it over and over several times until it was embedded in my brain. No one in golf has meant so much to me. From the time I first met you at that junior event, I’ve admired you as a consummate Masters champion, South African leader and sportsman, and a tireless global ambassador for the game itself. I’ve also admired your unused frequent flyer points!

Also, thank you for all those practice rounds at the Masters when you were nice enough to share your knowledge and experience. I kept them in mind the whole week especially the one where you said, “If the wind starts blowing over 25 mph, forget everything I’ve told you and fend for yourself.” And the putting tip worked wonders. I only peeked once and it cost me. I had a three-foot birdie putt on the seventh and I yanked it badly, never even touching the cup. It took me several holes to regain my footing, so to speak. The 11th hole, as you warned me so many times in the past, was a real test, especially with the gusting winds. It was the hardest hole on the course for both the day and the week. I desperately needed to sink a 20-footer just on the fringe to save par. Keeping my head quiet, I stroked the ball right into the cup. Whew! Note: Cell phone call “dropped” at this point.

Immelman: Mr. Player, sorry about that dropped call. My battery was dying so I’ve switched to my wife’s mobile. By the way, Carminita says hello and thanks you for the fitness advice for our little Jacob -- who’s still awake amid the commotion here. Even though he’s only 21-months old, Jacob really enjoys doing those little push-ups. Anyway, thanks again for believing in me and supporting my golf career. I had some doubts along the way, even last week when I missed the cut in Houston, but you told me to work through it and never quit. Thank you. By the way, I received several nice compliments about wearing black on Sunday as you did on so many occasions. It goes well with the green jacket. See you in Cape Town very soon. Cheers, Mr. Player.

Voice mail left for Tiger Woods:

Immelman: Tiger, this is Trevor. Trevor Immelman. I just wanted to tell you again that what you’ve accomplished just boggles my mind. I mean, to have four green jackets is amazing. As I told the writers tonight, I'm an avid sports watcher and I study top sportsman and what you’ve done so far is phenomenal. To have won 13 majors is just frightening. I agree with something Zach Johnson said. For someone to win a major when you’re in the field and playing at the peak of your career is a hell of an achievement. I'm not sure if I'll ever get it done again, but I'll be trying my best. Sorry to hear – well, sort of -- about how your putter went sour today. Jim Nantz said it all by saying, “when you’re a fraction off at Augusta, you’re a mile away.” See you at Torrey Pines in June. And if you have any advice on dealing with the expected media questions on a Grand Slam, I’d appreciate a return call. Cheers.

Voice mail left for Masters Chairman Billy Payne:

Immelman: Mr. Payne, I want to thank you again for the marvelous dinner tonight at the club. I also forgot to mention something to you. You and the Masters are to be congratulated on the new Junior Pass Program which allowed youngsters age 8 to 16 to be admitted free on tournament days. What a wonderful way to inspire a young golfer. But may I kindly suggest lowering the age to five? Thanks to my Mom and Dad and Gary Player, that’s when I fell in love with the game.

HEALEY, MOORE AND SCOTT FEATURED IN LATEST GOLF BUSINESS MAGAZINE
=====================================================================
The April issue of the NGCOA's "Golf Business" feature Handicomp's Stewart Healey, Gull Lake's Jim Scott and MGCOA's Kete Moore in an article entitled, "A League of Their Own" written by Trent Bouts. Handicomp has developed a piece of golf software which has made the administration of league play, almost to the stage of a tap in. The product has been around for a couple of years and is starting to get some traction in Indiana, Ohio, Iowa and here in Michigan. It is the hope that the software will entice more league play and thus more rounds for golf courses.

In Michigan, there is a culminating experience with a League Championship. MGTV has covered a couple of these events http://michigangolfer.tv/2006shows/mgcoa/ and had interviews with Scott, Healey, Moore and current MGCOA President, Bill Fountain. It looks like they really have something here, but it also looks like it is going to take some time to gain more acceptance.

THE PRO'S AND GOD
===================
God asks Arnie first : "What do you believe ?" Arnie thinks long and hard, looks God in the eye, and says : "I believe in hard work, and in staying true to family and friends. I believe in giving. I was lucky, but I always tried to do right by my fans."

God can't help but see the essential goodness of Palmer, and offers him a seat to his left.

Then God turns to Nicklaus and says : "What do you believe ?" Jack says, "I believe passion, discipline, courage and honor are the fundamentals of life. I, too, have been lucky, but win or lose, I've always tried to be a true sportsman, both on and off the playing fields.'"

God is greatly moved by Jack's high-pitched eloquence, and he offers him a seat to his right.

Finally, God turns to Woods : "And you, Tiger, what do you believe ?"

Tiger replies : "I believe you're in my seat."

Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Mike Biber for this dandy.

ENGLISH HILLS COMING BACK ONLINE
=================================
Hello Art I just wanted to send you a note. I've been listening to you on the radio and want to thank you for all you have been doing for thegame of golf in Michigan. I know that these are challenging times for many golf courses. And your efforts have not gone unnoticed. I am writing you to say that we have started efforts to reopen English Hills! I'll give you a little history on English Hills G.C.

The golf course shut down in 2003 for development. the developers eventually pulled out and nothing was done with the course. We havedecided to get back to what we do best. We are excited but realize the challenge ahead of us are many. I just thought you would like to know.

Stephen Sorrelle

*Editor's Note: Stephen, I am sure that a lot of fans of English Hills, will enjoy resuming their play. Let us know when you are holding the re-opening. Art

THE VAULT: GROWING UP ON "THE MONSTER"
by Jack Berry
===============================================
Tom Watrous' memories of Oakland Hills reach back to when he was five years old and his father, Al, was professional. Pete Jackson's memories go back to the 1951 Open when he and his brother, Mike, sold lemonade from a stand by their house behind the third green. Their lives have been entwined with the club on Maple Road ever since.

"I remember playing nine holes with my dad, Johnny Osgood, who was a member, and the fella who played the bellcap in the Philip Morris cigarette ads_the little guy who would walk around in a bellcap uniform saying 'Call for Philip Morris!' I was nine years old and about as tall as he was," Tom Watrous said.

"We had quite a few people following us and I hit a good drive on the eighth hole and then I had an uphill lie_and I whiffed it. I was so embarrassed."

Crowds following Tom's father weren't unusual at Oakland Hills and neither was the appearance of celebrities, especially the game's best golfers.

"Walter Hagen and Tommy Armour would come to play and Dad would beat them_no one could beat him at Oakland Hills. He had so many rounds in the low and mid-60s that you couldn't count them. He averaged in the high 60s through the years."

Al Watrous was Michigan's preeminent golfer. He won the Michigan Open a record six times, the first time in 1926 and the last in 1949. He won the Michigan PGA championship an incredible nine times and with an even more incredible spread_he won the inaugural in 1922 and won his last in 1954 with titles in four separate decades. Al died in 1983, two months before his 85th birthday.

Pete Jackson's father built a home behind the third green in 1950 and Pete was 12 at the time of 1951 Open.

"Johnny Bulla and Fred Haas stayed at our house. My brother (Mike) and I had a lemonade stand and Ben Hogan bought from us all four rounds.

"I remember the rough on the second hole being almost knee-deep. I found 22 balls in that stuff before the tournament started. It was aptly named 'The Monster.' "

Pete won the club championship in 1965 with rounds of 74-71-69 on the South Course and his best rounds have been 67s playing to par of 72. During major championships, the par 5 eighth and 12th holes are turned into long par 4s for a par of 70.

HELP- WHAT EVER BECAME OF BEN NICHOLLS OF BROOKLANDS GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB?
===============================================================================
Gary Rennie from the Windsor Star, is trying to find out more information about Ben Nicholls and the former Rochester area course, Brooklands Golf and Country Club. We know that he represented the club at the 1920 US Open held at Toledo Links. But that is as far as we got. We also think that Brooklands morphed into the Rochester CC. Anybody out there have any information on this I can pass on to Gary Rennie? artmccaf@glsp.com
