Augusta, Georgia -The Masters
Wednesday evening, Brian Whitcomb, President, PGA of America presented Jack Berry with thePGA Lifetime Journalism Award. Besides Berry, other people picking up award hardware that evening included Tiger Woods, Gary Player, Nancy Lopez, Judy Rankin, Lorena Ochoa, The Harmons and James Finegan. And how was your day?

On hand to give Berry a hand, were his daughters, his wife Bonnie Humm and friends Terry Moore and Greg Johnson. A five minute video had greetings from PGA professional and owner of Treetops, Rick Smith, some asides from Moore and Johnson and some video clips of Berry interviewing Dan Pohl, Elaine Crosby and Gary Wiren

As award dinners go, it was fast paced with acceptance speeches kept to a modest length. Berry's award was last his acceptance speech the longest, but it killed. Remember, here was an individual getting an award for his words and they did not fail him here. He thanked his family, his mentors in the writing game, the early days reporting from The Masters. He also gave shout outs to our great Michigan golf courses as well as those in his adopted Ireland.

Our Michigan Golfer cameras were there and we will have more on this story in months to come.

Santee, South Carolina
Lake Marion GC
As the world's best golfers played Augusta National course, we took on one of Santee, South Carolina's best, Lake Marion GC. The course opened in 1978 and was designed by Eddie Riccoboni. Three years ago, they reshaped and planted all of their greens with MiniVerde, a unique ultra dwarf bermuda grass. The purpose was to provide the golfers with a putting surface that would allow balls to run faster and truer. When my ball finally did get to their greens I found this to be true. It was a wonderful day and a perfect course to stretch those atrophied winter muscles.

We enjoyed the golf, weather, course and new friendships we made today. We were paired up with Clive Drown and Tom DuMont, both of Kitchener, Ontario. They were just finishing up their fourth day of golf and were leaving after our round. They had praise for the Lake Marion course and enjoyed the other Santee area courses as well. At Lake Marion, they liked the variety of holes that were presented to the golfer, the excellent greens, the best they had played while in Santee, and the calibre of service. This was their second trip to Santee, in other years, they have gone to Alabama, or Myrtle Beach. The course parking lot had a lot of cars from Ontario, Michigan and Ohio. Drown and DuMont indicated that Santee has what Canadian golfers are looking for; quality golf courses, reasonable prices, clean and affordable lodging and some of that warming South Carolina weather.

Today, we will play another course, before heading back to Michigan on Saturday. We will have more information on Santee golf, next week. Golf Packages http://www.santeetourism.com

Ypsilanti-Eagle Crest Resort
Westopped by the Eagle Crest Resort to check out the progress on the hotel's renovation. We also chatted withDave Horstman, the pro for the past five years, and now the new GM. Horstman says, he is on a mission to increase Eagle Crest's market share in the metro area's corporate golf outing business. In addition, he wants to increase the rounds of the locals and also have them feel more at home in the clubhouse. He has felt that the complex had begun to price itself out of their markets and that they needed to continue providing a quality golf experience, but at a more reasonable price.

The hotel is in the process of a substantial makeover. 80% of the rooms have undergone remodeling with the others being completed within the next couple of months. The old Players Club is now vacant and will be turned into a ballroom to accommodate the wedding and banquet markets. The current lobby bar will be expanded and become the main hotel bar. The hotel exterior has been repainted with a variety of earth tones and the parking lot is getting repaved. It is a Marriott hotel and will reflect that quality upon the renovation's completion later this year.

STREAMING VIDEO AT THE MASTERS
==============================
If you can't find a television set to check out what's happening at this year's Masters, the folks at Augusta National are offering enough online video to satisfy even the most ardent fans at http://Masters.org.

The coverage began earlier this week with live streaming video of the player interviews. On Wednesday, the Par 3 Contest was aired, and from Thursday on, visitors can watch live coverage of Amen Corner.

On Thursday, a new tradition began when Arnold Palmer took his place on the first tee at Augusta National Golf Club to hit the opening drive. You can see the video and Arnold's comments orfor the truly golf-obsessed, there's even a live Web cam on the driving range.

ANOTHER BOGEY

Hi Art,

A minor point, in the info on Huntmore Golf Club you stated "Huntmore, originally called the Michigan Golf Club" It was correctly called the Golf Club of Michigan.

As much as I hate to see courses closing a list of courses that closedsince 2000 and courses that changed names since 2000 would be interesting. Also private clubs that have changed to semi-private or public (such as Chemung Hills and Coldwater).

Thanks and I enjoy your newsletters. Maybe you should include your e-mail address in newsletter so people can contact you more easily.

George
*Editor's Note: Thanks George and a Tip of the Tam for your sharp eye. I will include my email address as you propose. And...I will begin to assemble a list of those courses that have closed since 2000. Cheers.

Art

EWGA GEARS UP
===============
The EWGA Championship, the largest amateur women's golf competition in the United States, begins in April at local chapters of the Executive Women's Golf Association (EWGA). From April through July, depending on the area's golf season, local competitions will be held by the 120 EWGA chapters found throughout the United States and Canada.

At the chapter level, EWGA members compete in individual stoke play in five flights based on USGA handicaps and a scramble team competition. Low gross and low net winners in each flight and the winning scramble team then compete in one of 15 semi-final competitions held throughout the United States. (see locations below). Semi-final winners will compete in the 36-hole championship finals at the Hermitage Golf Course in Old Hickory, Tennessee on September 7 - 8, 2007. Now in its 12th year, this annual competition had 2455 participants in 2006.
