MGN ON THE ROAD

Gaylord
The Gaylord Golf Mecca is readying for its 20th anniversary year. We stopped by Treetops and The Otsego Club to see what was up. Treetops had a full conference center of people and the marketing folks were booking tee times. At the Otsego Club, the new carpeting in the main building has been completed and three of the lodging buildings are getting new roofs. The proshop at Otsego was in the process of being stocked for the coming season. Most of the snow is gone, after getting a fresh dump a week ago.

Harbor Springs-Boyne Falls-Boyne 2 Boyne
After stopping in at Boyne Mountain to have a glass of Everett's Ale in the Grand Mountain bar, I headed to Harbor Spring to meet with Liza Gillespie. Gillespieis the event manager for Boyne and is in the process of promoting the new Boyne 2 Boyne Marathon, scheduled for the two resorts on September. Runners will start at Boyne Highlands and complete the 26.2 miles at Boyne Mountain. http://boyne.com

Mt. Pleasant
John Brehm said his tee times were sold out for this weekend as the Pohlcat begins it 14th year of operation. Brehm indicated that designer, pro golfer Dan Pohl, is having a tough time with his comeback on the Champions Tour due to his chronic bad back. Pohl finished 20th in theAllianz Championship this year and picked up 20K. However, he still needs to go to Monday qualifiers on most of the Champion Tour events..

Brehm was going to visit MSU this weekend to watch his nephew, Ryan Brehm compete in the Fossum/Spartan Invitational.. Ryan Brehm, recently won the Boilermaker Invitational at Purdue, a victory that made him eligible for some great tournaments this summer.

Brehm's father recently passed away, and family members feel it may be time to reduce some of their holdings. The Soaring Eagle Casino folks have long thought about buying the Pohlcat and perhaps the time is now right. Brehm said they have the land for a second golf course and have had Bill Newcomb and Bruce Matthews III take a look at the site at various times in the past. Brehm said people would be surprised at the site because of its elevation. "When they talk about Mount Pleasant, this is where the "Mount" comes from," said Brehm. Newcomb hailed it as a great site for e a golf course.

Native American Cup
COO and founder of the Native American Cup http://nativeamericancup.org. Henry Boullley Jr., is a resident of Mt. Pleasant. He is beginning to gear up for the third installment of the tournament. He notes that tribes from New York and Oklahoma will field teams at the tournament, which is scheduled for The Grand Traverse Resort in early August.

Ypsilanti-Miles of Golf
We stopped by our neighborhood golf shop, Miles of Golf, to begin the search for a new set of clubs. They have really done a great job at creating a first rate showplace for golf equipment and instruction. I did not settle yet on my new weapons, but I certainly was exposed to all the major brands.

ODDS AND ENDS
By Terry Moore
===============
As noted in last weekıs column, Masters Chairman Billy Payne made the right call in restoring the past practice of automatically inviting PGA Tour winners into the Masters. This past week during the final round of the Heritage Verizon Classic, CBS anchor Jim Nantz quickly jumped on the Masters invite angle for Boo Weekley even before his remarkable final chip-in. Such Masters tie-ns will be duplicated all year long for first-time winners.

Speaking of Weekley, itıs a safe guess the ³good ole boy² from Milton, FL and graduate of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College will become a ³Peopleıs Choice² fan favorite in the vein of John Daly. In fact, the plain-spoken Weekley is akin to Daly but without all of the baggage.

Suggestion to those fun-loving but raucous fans at the Buick Openıs famed 17thhole: when Weekley plays the par-three this June, donıt chant ³Boo.² Instead, give it a Detroit Tigers fan twist and chant, ³Lou.²(And letıs see if CBS announcers Feherty or McCord pick up on it.)

On a more serious note, wouldnıt it be terrific to see Michigan native and actor Jeff Daniels, whoıs the centerpiece of the Michigan Economic Development Corp.ıs savvy³Upper Hand² media spots, in some out-of-state ads focusing on Michiganıs sizable travel and tourist assets? Set Daniels up at Arcadia Bluffs or Bay Harbor in golf gear; dress him up in fly fishing gear along the Pere Marquette River, show him at a winery in Traverse City; have him strolling inside Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, etc. Of course, Michigan is battling for its life in saving and creating manufacturing jobs, which have slipped at an alarming rate with no relief in sight, so our stateıs travel strategy is taking a back seat. But the ³Upper Hand² campaign by our state must recognize (and invest) more the importance of Michiganıs travel industry of which golf plays a vital role.

In a related ³good news² development, the Chrysler Group announced this week a nearly $2 billion investment in two new plants for southeast Michigan which could result in 1500 new jobs. Even with the rumors of U.S-DaimlerChrysler possibly being sold, this news is a refreshing break in the clouds.

FOSSUM/SPARTAN INVITATIONAL
=============================
We got a note from Eastern Michigan University golf coach, Bruce Cunningham, urging us to attend this week's Fossum/Spartan Invitational to sample some great collegiate golf. He reminds us that the Eagles have anover-all D-1 record of 75-51 and are 21-7 againstMAC programs. Currently, they are ranked #110 on Sagarin/GolfWeek and #115 on the Golfstat National ranking.
The Fossum Invitationalat Forest Acres West, is a very competive field. For those that cannot make it there, you can monitor the event at http://golfstat.com

=====================================================
RYAN BREHM BIG TEN AND GOLFWEEK PLAYER OF WEEK
=====================================================
Michigan State junior Ryan Brehm earned Big Ten Co-Player of the Week and Golfweek Player of the Week honors after claiming the individual title at last week's Boilermaker Invitational. Brehm recorded a 2-under-par 72-70 - 142 total and was the only player in the field to finish the 36-hole tournament under par. The win was Brehm's first collegiate victory and fifth top-five finish of his career.

Brehm's performance propelled MSU to a nine-shot victory, its first tournament win since the 2005 Big Ten Championship and eighth in the Mark Hankins coaching era. On the season, Brehm owns the team's second-lowest scoring average (74.85) and leads the team with seven rounds of par or better.

Entering the tournament ranked No. 146 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, Brehm improved his national ranking to No. 75 and is now the sixth-highest ranked player in the Big Ten. The honors were the first of Brehm's career, and first for a Spartan since Matt Harmon earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors after winning the 2006 EZ-Go Schenkel Invitational.

BOOK REVIEW: JOHN DALY: MY LIFE IN & OUT OF THE ROUGH
By Glen Waggoner
=====================================================
This New York Times Bestseller is now out in paperback and you can read it in about the time John Daly can down a six pack of brewskis and smoke a couple of Marlboros. As with his fascination with fast women, fast food, fast divorces, fast games of golf and life in the fast lane, this is a fast read. John tells all in the book and devotes his half life story to his followers and fans.

John Daly on:
Tiger-" One time when Tiger was walking through the clubhouse on his way to the gym, "I say to him, 'Hey man, don't you ever get tired of that workout s___? Why don't you come and have a couple of beers with us and hang out" He goes. ' If I had your talent, John, I would not have to work out.'"

Food- "I think Burger King has the best burgers. Wendy's burgers ain't bad. And I love McDonald's fries and their sausage biscuits. And their Quarter Pounders are good, too. But my favorite is the Double-Double, Animal Style at the In-N-Out chain in California."

Marriage- "All my exes wear Rolexes" is the title of a song he wrote for his CD Fun read. You can order at http://harpercollins.com $13.95 U.S. and $17.50 Canadian

BOOK REVIEW: THE GOLFER'S BIBLE
================================
Obviously, the book is not new and the story line has not changed over the past two thousand years. However, the book targets the golfer in its packaging. This is part of a series of bibles targeted after niche groups. Prior books include; "The Brides Bible", The Soldiers Bible", "The Sailiors Bible" . etc. The release of The Golfer's Bible, coming on the heels of Zach Johnson's Masters win and his spiritual post tournament remarks, should give the "Golfer's Bible, an extra boost in sales.

MHSAA SPORTS CALENDAR-SPRING GOLF FOR ALL
============================================
The Supreme Court decided it would not hear the decade old suit between the Michigan High School Athletic Association and Grand Rapids-based Communities for Equity. With that decision, the MHSAA decided it would comply with a schedule it submitted to the Kalamazoo federal court that originally ruled against it.

The decision impacts most high school sports. On the golf side, it means that both the girls and boys golf season will be held in the Spring. Bob Lober, the Executive Director of the Michigan Golf Coaches Association, said that while they are unhappy with this decision, they will comply. He indicated that golf courses will be a bit more crowded this spring with all those high school golfers.

Extracted from a story by Rob Hoffman, in the April 13th issue of the Ann Arbor News.

WATER-DRINK UP THIS SUMMER
=============================
1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half the world population.)
2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is mistaken for hunger.
3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as 3%.
4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
7.A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen oron a ! printed page.
8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%., and one is 50% lesslikely to developbladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should drink every day?

This healthy tip is supplied by Jack Minzey. A Tip of the Tam to Jack for reminding that water can be more than a hazard.

SCOTT HEAD UPDATE
==================
Jack Berry, got a congratulatory call on his recent PGA Lifetime Journalism Award from "Say Nice Things About Detroit" Emily Gail Gail, who now says nice things about Hawaii, has a weekly golf radio show, "Emily Talks Golf"(850AM in Hilo, 790AM in Kona).

Berry mentioned that Scott Head, former Head Professional at Treetops, had just taken the top position atWaikoloa on the Big Island.Emily contacted and interviewed Head for her show.

We then got an email from Head indicating that all is well, now that his family has joined him.

Scott Head returned to Hawai'i to become the Director of Club Operations for Waikoloa Beach & Golf Resort. The position is a new one for the resort.Head had played golf for four years at the University of Hawaii , graduating in 1990. He was assistant pro at Waialae Country Club before moving up to head pro at Princeville Resort from 1996 to 2000. He was the Aloha Section PGA Professional of the Year in 1999.

For the past seven years, Head had been director of golf operations at Treetops Resort. He worked with resort owner and popular pro instructor Rick Smith at Treetops. Head also helped coach former Hawai'i state high school champion Parker McLachlin on the Mainland. He and McLachlin, now a rookie on the PGA Tour, still work together.

Head will oversee management, maintenance, marketing and sales for Waikoloa's Kings' and Beach courses, and develop new strategies and programs.
