MGN ON THE ROAD
=================
East Lansing-Forest Akers
The weather was perfect for the Fossum/Spartan Invitational as some of Michigan's finest young golfers dueled in the sun on the Arthur Hills remake of the W. Bruce Matthews Forest Akers West course. These are great times for the Spartans. They have a couple of young guns in Matt Harmon and Ryan Brehm. Brehm was hot off his Boilermaker Invitation win and 'Senior Matt Harmon earned his second career Big Ten Co-Golfer of the Week honors Tuesday after topping the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate field last week." http://msuspartans.cstv.com/sports/m-golf/spec-rel/041707aab.html

Gaylord-The Natural
Ed Ford, the new Director of Golf, was getting the pro shop ready for the opening of The Natural today. Ford, who has worked at Shanty Creek and Ruby Tuesday, is excited about his new position and is looking forward to the 15th anniversary of The Natural.

Harbor Springs-Boyne Highlands and Harbor Point Golf Club
Boyne Highlands will not look much different this year, but it has had major bypass surgery this spring. The heating and air conditioning infrastructure has been overhauled completely. There were still a ton of service vehicles cleaning up last Friday morning in readying itself for the guests arriving that night to open up the golf season.
http://boyne.com

Harbor Point Golf Club
Shared a nice morning with Shaun Bezilla, Head Professional at Harbor Point Golf Club. We are putting together a video of the course, to link to his newly designed website. This is one of a number of Michigan golf courses that are into their 3rd century.
http://www.harborpointassociation.com/golf/

Petoskey-Walloon Lake CC
The remaining Kelbel brother, Peter, is the Head Golf Professional at Walloon Lake CC. Pete's brothers Mark and Ed are now in Colorado Mark used to be at the Grand Hotel and Ed recently left his position at The Emerald at Maple Creek.

Besides having the remaining Kelbel brother, Walloon Lake CC is famous for the summer course of Tom Watson. The Adventures of a Young Man, also included one of America's best ball strikers. The original Walloon Lake course is over 100 years old, with the new nine, a design by W. Bruce Matthews III, coming on in the 90's.

Harry Dixon, the GM of the club was also on hand. Dixon will have his hands full on September 30 with not only golfers, but runners. The first Boyne 2 Boyne Marathon will use the clubhouse as a staging area for the start of the half marathon and marathon relay.

Saline-Rustic Glen GC
Golf business was in full swing at Rustic Glen as the driving range was full and the sky was yellow with range balls flying out of the range. The population seems to be growing toward Rustic Glen as Saline expands and start snaking down US 23.

Greg and Harley Hodges are the owners, golf professionals and architect of this fine course. The Hodges bought Rustic Glen when it was nine holes and the added the other nine. Harley Hodge designed a number of Michigan courses in the late 70's, 80's and early 90's. You can find out more about the Harley's with a video we did in
2003. http://michigangolfer.tv/2003shows/show12/index.html

SPARTANS WIN FOSSUM/SPARTAN INVITATIONAL FOR FIRST TIME IN 15 YEARS
====================================================================
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Leading the 13-team field after Saturday's 36 holes at The Fossum Invitational, the 29th-ranked Michigan State men's golf team extended their lead to take a 14 shot victory with a 54-hole total of 23-under-par 841 (279-284-278). Taking home individual medalist honors in a three-way tie was Matt Harmon and Jack Newman of Michigan State and Jason Kokrak of Xavier.

"It's a nice week to maximize our play and practice since we don't have to travel," Michigan State head coach Mark Hankins said. "The Fossum/Spartan Invitational carries a lot of significance in the history of our program and we were very pleased to be able to go out and capture the team championship this year."

The Spartans shot a final round 278 (-10), to increase their lead over second-place finisher Charlotte who posted a three round total of 9-under-par 855. Following Charlotte, Xavier came in third with a 6-under-par 858 and Wisconsin rounded out the top four teams with a 4-under-par 860 total.

This is the third consecutive tournament where a Spartan has captured individual medalist honors. Two weeks ago, Ryan Brehm won the Boilermaker Invitational and last weekend Matt Harmon topped the Kepler Intercollegiate at Ohio State. Both players earned Big Ten Men's Golfer of the Week accolades for their efforts.

The Fossum Invitational team win is the first in 15 years for the Spartans with individual medalist honors reaching back to Spartan Brent Kish in 1990. The Green and White also broke the previous tournament scoring record with their (841) which was previously set by Northwestern (851) in 2001. Michigan State's total also broke their all-time best 54 hole team score obliterating the previous 847 total set at the 2005 Big Ten Championships.

On that occasion, Wawashkamo could claim the distinction of being one of very few American courses laid out in a links style that remains substantially unaltered. Named one of America's Historic Golf Landmarks by Golf Digest in 1996, Wawashkamo is the only nine-hole course among the dozen in the United States to have been so designated."

PAR 3 SHOOTOUT-OUT FOR 2007, BACK IN FOR 2008
=============================================
The Par 3 Shootout is out for 2007, but according to new Director of Golf, Kevin McKinley, the PGA has put it on hiatus for a year and it can come back in 2008. Obviously with any event like this, they need to nail down a sponsor. This has long been a premier event in our state and certainly one we want to hold on to.

MARY FOSSUM HONORED DURING FOSSUM/SPARTAN INVITATIONAL
============================================================
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Big Ten Conference office has accepted the women's golf coaches' recommendation for the creation of the Mary Fossum Award, the league announced on April 17. The award, named after the former Michigan State women's golf coach, will be presented to the student-athlete with the lowest stroke average according to the Golfstat.com rankings.

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must play in a minimum of six tournaments. For student-athletes who participate in more than six events with at least three teams at the event, all scores will count. The first Mary Fossum Award will be handed out before the Big Ten Championships at Forest Akers Golf Course, which begin on Friday, April 27.

"I'm so surprised but thrilled to think that the Big Ten would name the award for lowest scoring average after me," Fossum said from her home in Okemos, Mich. "I don't know what to say. It's great. It's wonderful."
Currently, Purdue's Maria Hernandez is leading the race for the award with a 73.13 stroke average. Michigan State junior Sara Brown (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) is second in the Big Ten in scoring average, as she has averaged 74.00 strokes per round.

Fossum was head coach of the Spartans from the program's creation in 1973 until her retirement in 1997. Under Fossum's guidance, the Spartans won five straight Big Ten titles from 1974-78 and played in six consecutive AIAW National Championships (1973-78). The Spartans regained the conference crown in 1982 and played in the 1982 and 1984 NCAA Championships. MSU claimed its third conference runner-up spot under Fossum at the 1987 Big Ten Championship.

Those accomplishments led to recognition of Fossum as one of the country's best collegiate golf coaches. She was honored as the first NCAA Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 1984 and was inducted into the Golf Coaches Hall of Fame in 1988. In 1999, Michigan State's annual fall women's golf tournament was renamed the Mary Fossum Invitational. In January of 1998, Fossum was honored by the College Golf Foundation with the Rolex/Gladys Palmer Meritorious Service Award for outstanding service and contributions to collegiate women's golf. She was inducted into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 27, 2003.
