MAY
====
What is so sweet and dear,
As a prosperous morn in May,
The confident prime of the day,
And the dauntless youth of the year,
When nothing that asks for bliss,
Asking aright, is denied,
And half of the world a bridegroom is,
And half of the world a bride?,
- William Watson, Ode in May, 1880

HOLE IN ONE CLUB
=================
Jerry Benson, took a quick glance at the second hole of Greystone Golf Club, and then researched his mind to remember how many holes in one he had made in playing this game for 35 years. The answer came back in a flash, none. But this was a new day and his trusty 8-iron felt comfortable in his hands and he knew that the 122 yards to the pin, was just about right for the club. He had acquired this Adams club a while back, thinking that someday, he just might hit the perfect shot. The Nike ball shot upwards toward the pin in a joyous arc. He watched it as it flew straight and true. Could this be the day? Yes!!!
The ball quickly found the cup and the 68 year old golfer from Washington knew that the day was going to be a great one. His final round was a 92.

FIRST TEE FUNDRAISER AT BOYNE HIGHLANDS
==========================================
The First Tee of Boyne Highlands will hold it’s annual golf fundraiser on Thursday, June 5,2008. The outing will take place at Birchwood Farms Golf and Country Club in Harbor Springs, Michigan. Golf will begin at 2 PM with a dinner and silent auction in the evening.

All proceeds benefit The First Tee of Boyne Highlands, a local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The First Tee programs are designed to introduce young people, ages 5 to 17, to the game of golf by providing learning facilities and educational programs based on nine core principals that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf. Participants discover how skills essential to success on a golf course can ultimately lead to greater achievements in life.
“Birchwood Farms is proud to host this year’s event to support The First Tee program. The First Tee is such a fantastic organization. The core values and life skills that the program introduces go well beyond the game of golf”, stated Cris Cavitt, head golf professional at Birchwood. “We are expecting a full field, so sign up early.”

Registration for the outing should be made by May 28 and sponsorship opportunities are still available. To register for The First Tee of Boyne Highlands golf outing or to inquire about sponsoring, please call 231.526.3168.

The youth development programs are offered at Boyne Highlands’ Cuff Links course in Harbor Springs, Michigan. For more information, please visit http://www.thefirstteeboynehighlands.org

AMATEUR GOLFERS BEGIN PATH TO PINEHURST WITH THE 2008 PGA MCGLADREY TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
==========================================================================================
Amateur golfers can begin the path to a national championship berth by registering their teams online for Local Qualifying Events in the second PGA McGladrey Team Championship. The online registration process is part of the nationwide grassroots best-ball amateur championship, managed and operated by The PGA of America. In the upcoming weeks, Local Qualifying Events will be held at several prominent golf facilities throughout the Michigan Section (full list and schedule below).

The PGA McGladrey Team Championship, which will celebrate its national championship Oct. 20-22, at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort, features three-person amateur teams in Local Qualifying Events that will be conducted throughout September. Those qualifiers advance to 41 Section Championships, conducted from April through September, and feature four-player teams including a PGA Professional. The 41 Section Champion teams will advance to the national championship at Pinehurst Resort.

Registering amateur golfers are asked to enter their three-person team online at PGA.com/teamchampionship. Amateurs may view on the Web site where Local Qualifying Events are scheduled in their area. If an amateur’s home club does not offer an event, they are encouraged to contact their local PGA Professional.

PGA Professionals will receive a portion of the registration fees for hosting Local Qualifying Events and also four MSR credits. Competition is open to golfers of all ages and playing abilities.

The National Championship field will compete on three of Pinehurst’s premier layouts, opening at Pinehurst No. 8, which has hosted the 1997 and 1998 PGA Professional National Championship. The field concludes by playing the final two rounds on Pinehurst No. 2 and Pinehurst No. 4. Pinehurst No. 2 has been the site of some of golf’s historic championships, including the 1936 PGA Championship, the 1951 Ryder Cup and the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Open.

PRIVATES
=========
The National Golf Foundation has been looking into the status of private golf clubs in the U.S. and has come up with the following summary:
For every private club that has closed its doors over the past decade, another 10 have converted to public courses.
--The number of private golf clubs in the U.S. today is equal to the number that existed on the eve of the Great Depression.
--After home relocation, financial reasons top the list of why members are leaving clubs.
--Latent demand still exists for private clubs, and baby boomers may yet join in the years ahead.

Golf Course Openings - By the Numbers
Michigan ranked number one for about five years in the late 90's. Now they have drifted down to 9th.
