Jonesville-Mill Race We were in Hillsdale  covering the Gina Relays and checked out the Mill Race Golf Course,  It was one of Arthur Hills first courses and one he remembered  fondly  in his book  "The Works of Art"  with some big time help from Michael Patrick Shiels.  His rememberance of Mill Race GC is a follows. "One fellow who really put his heart in the game contacted me in 1968; he had that heart set on building a nine-hole golf course.  His name was Casey Jones. At seventy-five yeras old, he was a just-retired industrialist who lived in Hillsdale, Michigan. He had  a rocky old piece of ground in Jonesveille, and it was his dream to create a golf course.   We built him his dream course, his nine holes. Casey named it Mill Race Golf Club. he was always out here mowing the fairways and greens and collecting his ten-dollar green fees. He was a wonderful, spirited guy who just loved nursing this course along by hand....He paid us $10,000 for the design."   ========================================== NEW SHOW ON MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION ========================================== Otsego Club Preview- with Mark Hogan Mark Hogan is one of the constants within the Gaylord Golf Mecca.  He has been at the Otsego club for over a decade.  In our video, he outlines the dual personality of the Otsego Club's golf complex.  The Tribute is one of the great golf experiences in Michigan and truth is, you can get dinged up a bit out there.  The Classic, a William Diddel creation, will allow your golfing wounds to heal from your bout with The Tribute.  The Classic is what resort golf was meant to be, courses with  comfortable yardage, flush fairways, few bunkers and great greens. http://michigangolfer.tv =============================================== MICHIGAN AMATEUR GOLF TOUR FORE LAKE RESULTS =============================================== The Michigan Amateur Golf Tour continued its fourth season of providing everyday golfers a chance to tee it up like the pros. As the CEO and driving force behind the Maumee-based AboutGolf Ltd, a world-leader in golf simulators, Bales traces his entrepreneurial bent to his parents and grandparents.   “My mother’s father grew up on a farm,” said Bales, “and he later owned his own business, selling farm-related equipment and also eggs.” Bales said his father, also a self-made and successful businessman, was the inventor of “plantable animals”—ready-to-go topiaries for the landscaping industry.   With such business roots and upbringing, it shouldn’t be a surprise to find Bales now expertly tilling the soil in the rich field of golf technology. Formed in 2002, AboutGolf (www.aboutgolf.com) started as a subsidiary of Friendly Software Corp. which produced Microsoft Golf, Greg Norman Ultimate Challenge Golf and World Tours. But nowadays, Bales and AboutGolf are focused on game-improvement technology, largely but not exclusively centering on state-of-the-art simulators.   In a techie nutshell, Bales says the future of AboutGolf is in “integrating peripherals,” meaning taking various game-improvement software and technical programs and products, not necessarily developed or owned by AboutGolf, and making them a part of the simulator experience. Such integrated peripheral products include WeightTrac, VideoTrac, Kudu Power, DataTrac, and ShotTrac. These programs are excellent tools in club-fitting and instruction.   As someone schooled in the credo that a sound golf swing must be built from the ground up, I tried out WeightTrac under Bales’ tutelage and found the information extremely helpful. WeightTrac, with the use of a force plate and sensors beneath one’s feet and stance, will record the center of gravity patterns in one’s swing. For me, it exposed some early season tendencies toward a slight reverse weight shift in my iron play. But the WeightTrac is just one example on how an AboutGolf simulator is changing the dynamics of golf instruction and club-fitting, particularly in the indoor retail sector.     Bales said his company, which employs 12 engineers in its newly expanded, 5,000-square foot Maumee, Ohio headquarters, has gained strong acceptance by a number of leading golf retailers, including PGA Superstores, Golf Galaxy and Canada’s Golftown. For example, at the new PGA Superstore in Dallas, one will find 14 About Golf simulators helping to drive equipment sales via demos and club-fitting while also driving lessons and instruction.    “Our simulators help to bring the practice range to the retail store,” summed up Bales, an avid but time-challenged golfer still hanging on to a single digit handicap. Most of these big-box stores lack the space and convenience of the outdoor range so indoor simulators are the next best thing, especially with all of the nifty technology and fun games thrown in. “For many novice golfers and beginners, a simulator experience or session is less intimidating and more fun,” said Bales. Using a show biz term, Bales said simulators “play well in Peoria” in reaching out to new golfers. However, simulators have a price tag that might not “sell well” in Peoria, given their $40,000 price. Thus, they’re not for every retail shop or even upscale homeowner—a residential niche seen by Bales as another ripe area for growth.   I must confess, as a “core avid” player, simulators never really rocked my world but those tendencies, like my faulty weight shift, are “a-changing.” With “higher than high def” graphics on such available “courses to play” as Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, and Michigan’s Bay Harbor, and with a host of built-in and top-notch instructional tools, AboutGolf simulators are a fun yet high tech avenue for would-be players and veteran ‘perfect swing searchers’ alike.   In conclusion, I humbly predict AboutGolf has more than just a “prayer’s chance” in continuing its success in the golf industry. Besides, Bales grandfather was a Presbyterian minister with a doctoral degree in Divinity. That “spirit” is in Bill’s DNA as well.           =============================== 2007 MICHIGAN GOLFER CALENDAR =============================== JUNE 1      MHSAA Upper Peninsula Boys and Girls Finals-Multiple sites           MHSAA Lower Peninsula Boys and Girls Finals-Multiple sites http://www.mhsaa.com/sports/ggf/index.htm 2   MIAGT at Hunters Ridge GC,Howell    http://www.miagt.com/Schedule 4-7- 6th Michigan Women's Senior Amateur-Gaylord Country Club http://gam.org 5-6   Michigan Players Tour -Shepherd's Hollow GC, Clarkston http://michiganplayertour.com 8 4th Annual E-Gridiron Group Golf Outing, Eagle Crest Resort    Register at http://emueagles.com 8-9    Michigan Open Pro-Am, Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, Acme           Web: http://grandtraverseresort.com 9   Golf Channel Amateur Tour-Black River CC, Port Huron http://www.thegolfchannel.com/amateurtour/?v.pos=548&h.pos=0 10    President’s Stroke Play Tournament  Fieldstone GC , Auburn Hills http://www.mwgolf.org/ 11-12  Michigan Players Tour -Angel's Crossing ,Vicksburg http://michiganplayertour.com 11-14:  Michigan Open Championship Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, Acme           Web: http://grandtraverseresort.com 15 Orchard Lake St. Mary's 55th Annual Flounder's Day, Friday 7:00 a.m. to Midnight For tickets for more information call (248) 683-0411 16    MIAGT at Twin Lakes GC,  Oakland    http://www.miagt.com/Schedule 12-13  9th GAM Women's Mid-Amateur -Edgewood Country Club http://gam.org 19    Michigan Players Tour -Angel;s Crossing, Vioksburg http://michiganplayertour.com 19-23  96th Michigan Amateur-Red Run Golf Club http://gam.org 23  Golf Channel Amateur Tour-Mulberry Hill GC,Bloomfield Hills http://www.thegolfchannel.com/amateurtour/?v.pos=548&h.pos=0 25-27- 29th Michigan Girls Junior State Amateur  -Owosso Country Club http://gam.org 26-27  Michigan Players Tour -The Ravines, Saugatuck   http://michiganplayertour.com 26-7-1  Buick Open, Warwick Hills G &  CC, Grand Blanc          http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/r035/ 28-30  The Hickory Open, Belvedere CC http://www.belvederegolfclub.com/ 30    MIAGT at Devils Ridge GC,  Oxford    http://www.miagt.com/Schedule JULY 3   Michigan Players Tour -King's Challenge GC, Cedar http://michiganplayertour.com 7   Golf Channel Amateur Tour-Dunham HIlls GC, Hartland http://www.thegolfchannel.com/amateurtour/?v.pos=548&h.pos=0 10-11  Michigan Players Tour -Grand Traverse Resort-Acme http://michiganplayertour.com 10-14  91st Michigan Women's Amateur Egypt Valley Country Club http://gam.org 14   MIAGT at Captains Club GC, Grand Blanc   http://www.miagt.com/Schedule 14       Michigan Women's Open Pro-Am, Crystal Mountain Resort  http://crystalmountain.com , Thompsonville 16-18  Michigan Women's Open  Crystal Mountain Resort http://crystalmountain.com , Thompsonville 16-19  29th Michigan Junior State Amateur Prestwick Village Golf Club      http://gam.org 17   Michigan Players Tour -Lakewood Shores Resort, Oscoda http://michiganplayertour.com 21   Golf Channel Amateur Tour-Copper Hills GC, Oxford http://www.thegolfchannel.com/amateurtour/?v.pos=548&h.pos=0 24   5th GAM Junior Two-Person Team-Great Oaks Country Club http://gam.org 24-25  Michigan Players Tour -Otsego Club, Gaylord http://michiganplayertour.com 28    MIAGT at Cattails GC,South Lyon    http://www.miagt.com/Schedule 28-29  2-Day State Championship  Hunters Ridge GC , Howell http://www.mwgolf.org/ 30-8-5  105th Western Amateur, Point O'Woods G&CC,  Benton Harbor http://www.thewesternamateur.com/ 31     Michigan Players Tour -
