MGN ON THE ROAD
Ann Arbor
The life of Michiganšs Don Canham, was celebrated last Saturday at the University of Michiganšs Crisler Arena.
Jim Brandstatter was the Officiate of the Don Canham Memorial Service and shared the podium with those that gave eulogies, Lloyd Carr, Ron Warhurst, Wayne Duke, Tom Goss, Ron Kramer, Bill Frieder, Dave Diles Sr. and Bo Schembechler.

Canham established himself as a student, athlete, champion, teacher, businessman, university administrator and visionary. He was a pioneer in the emerging field of sports marketing as was Bill Veeck and Mark McCormack,

Ypsilanti-Eagle Crest Resort
The Eagle Crest Resort must have one of the visually most stunning practice tee areas in the state. Looking out from the clubhouse the practice area drops down dramatically to the area outlined by Ford Lake below. With the extra hang time and the West wind, you can seemingly hit the all a mile.

David Horstman, the GM and PGA pro of Eagle Crest, was formerly at Pheasant Ridge in Canton. Dave took over from the retired Tom Pendlebury not quite a year ago. Rob Sanders, who used to work at the Preserve, is on hand to help out Horstman.

Bruce Cunningham is the coach of Eastern Michigan University's Eagles golf team that uses Eagle Crest as their home base. May has been a great month for the EMU golf program. The Eagles shot -14(1138) at the 72 hole MAC Championships and finished 2nd behind Kent State.

Leading the charge was Senior Tyler McDannold who shot an EMU All-time record of -7(281). The team also set the 72 hole record and tied the 18 hole record of -8(280)

Korey Mahoney finished the season with an All-Time low scoring record of 72.42, breaking the record previously held by Ed Maunder. (72.6) Korey also was chosen to represent the Midwest Region at the NCAA Central Region at Notre Dame. The regional will be held May 19-21.

MICHIGAN GOLF HALL OF FAME CEREMONY
A foursome of notables will be inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame's Class of 2005 on Sunday, May 15 at Indianwood Golf & Country Club. They are:

Stan Aldridge
Stan Aldridge took ownership of Indianwood in 1981 vowing to bring the once historic club back to its glory. He restored the course to where it has been named by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine as one of the Top 100 courses in the country. He commissioned the New Course that opened in 1988 and drew raves for its design. The clubhouse was completely redesigned, adding a large addition that opened prior to hosting the 1989 U.S. Women's Open.

He acquired Lakewood Shores, adding the Gailes, which was named as the best new course in the country by Golf Digest. He and his son Kevin have since designed three additional courses.

When Indianwood hosted the 1989 U.S. Women's Open, the Championship set attendance records that stood until the 1994 Championship, also held at Indianwood and broke attendance records. The club has hosted the Michigan PGA Championship ten times and was the site of the 1930 Western Open.

Aldridge was the leading figure in establishing the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, being extremely generous with financial support and encouraging participation of the Michigan golf community. Without his support, the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame would not exist.

Joan Garety
Joan Garety has a rich history of competitive golf accomplishments following 4 years on the MSU Golf Team, which won the Big Ten Championship each year that she played. Here are some highlights of her competitive record:

Women's Michigan Amateur Champion 1982, 1987
Michigan Women's Golf Association Champion 6 times
GAM Tournament of Club Champions 3 times
GAM Mid Amateur Champion 2004
GAM Honor Roll 10 times
GAM Player of the Year 1997, 1999
Atlas Cup Team 15 times
USGA Mid-Amateur Qualifier 9 times
ISGA State Team of Michigan 5 times
Grand Rapids City Champion 9 times
In 2000, Joan was selected for the Michigan State University Scholar Athlete Alumni Award. Michigan

Jerry Matthews
A past president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, Jerry Matthews has concentrated his design efforts in Michigan. He has designed or remodeled over 200 courses in Michigan first as a partner with his father Bruce Matthews and then as head of his own company since 1985.

Jerry has designed more than 90 courses in 42 of Michigan 's 83 counties border-to-border and coast-to-coast. A few of his courses are Birchwood Farms in Harbor Springs, Elk Ridge in Atlanta, St. Ives in Stanwood, Timber Ridge in East Lansing, and his newest is Sundance, the second 18 at A-Ga-Ming in Kewadin. He did slip away to Alaska to design a course and do a little fishing.

He has taught golf course design and construction at MSU and mentored two rising architects Bruce Matthews lll and Raymond Hearn. Elected to the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2005.

Jeff Roth
Jeff Roth has won 11 Michigan PGA sanctioned major championships, which is second only to Al Watrous. Below is a partial list of Jeff's accomplishments:

GAM Junior Champion 1973
Michigan All-State High School Team 1974, 1975
Michigan Open Champion 1998, 2004
Michigan PGA Champion 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003
Yamaha Golf Classic Champion 1987, 1988
Qualified 5 times National PGA Championship
Fuller Cup Team 18 times
PGA Cup Team 3 times

Jeff is the Michigan 's Section PGA leader in career money won and cumulative Player of the Year Points. Jeff has won 25 PGA sanctioned events over his career. As a golf professional beginning in 1979, he has almost 50 victories to his credit. His 54 hole, no bogey 67-65-66 total of 198 in the 2001 Michigan PGA, for a 9 shot victory, stands out as a career highlight. Winning the last point in the 1996 PGA Cup Matches to win the Cup for the United States Team was possibly his greatest golf moment. Jeff won the last 4 holes to come from 2 down with 4 to play for the winning point at Gleneagles in Scotland.
