MGN ON THE ROAD

Grand Rapids

Jack Berry, put down his putter, gathered his family, laced up his running shoes and participated in the Fifth/Third River Bank Run. Jack's extremely better half, Bonnie is a fixture in many long distance runs in Michigan and out state was running the 25K. Jack and his three children were to run in the 5K. Last year, Jack finished first in his age group.

Sarnia/London

Golf course owners are grousing over another wet and cool spring. Golf rounds on many of the courses are at last year level's, which was considered a sub par year. The "Weir" effect is all over the sports pages. It seems no matter what the topic of a golf story was, Canadian golf hero, Mike Weir's name was somehow brought in. It is a amazing the impact that he is having here.

Ontario Newbies

Three golf courses are coming on board this year; Seven Lakes, a new one from Bruce Matthews camp. The course is just outside of Windsor. The Crimson Ridge, which is north Sault Ste. Marie and Whistle Bear, a John Robinson course, located near Toronto.

SSSSSSLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWPPPPPPPLLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY

At a Pace of Play Symposium held in St Andrews on 20th and 21st February the increasing problem of managing golf courses and competitions due to slow play was evident.

Hosted by the R&A, the Symposium was attended by over 50 leading golf administrators from Europe who listened to presentations and contributed to discussions in an effort to address the trend of slow play in all forms of play from championship golf to club level and resort play.

The key points of the Symposium covered what can be referred to as "The Five Cornerstones" of pace of play:

1. Management policies

2. Player ability

3. Course maintenance

4. Course Design

5. Player behaviour

"We know that play has become ever slower over the past 100 years" said David Pepper, Chairman of the R&Aís Championship Committee.

"However, slow play is one aspect of golf over which we can have some measure of control, given the right conditions. The Symposium brought together experts from all areas of golf administration, including course designers and architects, management of resort courses, Rules officials and governing bodies, so that their collective knowledge and experience might lead to a greater understanding of the problems and of its solution."

In addition to David Pepper, the speakers included Niall Flanagan of the St Andrews Links Trust, John Paramor, Chief Referee of the PGA European Tour and Bill Yates, a expert in pace of play management from the United States.

R&A Secretary, Peter Dawson, concluded the proceedings of the 2003 Symposium by saying: "The R&A is committed to combating slow play and will continue to progress initiatives in order to speed up the round of golf."
