MGN ON THE ROAD
=================
Farmington Hills Golf Club
The San Marino Golf Course opened for business in 1963 and was purchased by the City of
Farmington Hills in 1978. As the city grew, so did its need for increased recreational
facilities. Thus, after acquiring some additional property in the late 90's, Don Childs
and Associates were brought on to build nine new holes, remodel the former nine and create
a new area for golf instruction. Added to the mix was a the construction of a new
clubhouse and an underground tunnel to connect each of the nines.
We met with Don Childs and his chief designer John Zaliagiris to check out their work and
also get a little more acquainted. Childs and Associates have been active for more than
30 years and have worked in five states. Of note in Michigan, is their work at Cattails
GC in South Lyons, City of Flint's four courses, Gaylord CC, Michaywe Pines in Gaylord ,
Maple Leaf GC in Linwood, Stony Creek GC and Wawonowin GC in Ispheming.
They also had the opportunity to remodel their earliest work, Michaywe Pines It is rare
when an architect can revisit their early work to bring a course into a new generation of
golfers. Childs originally built Michaywe Pines 30 years ago. They added new tees did
some bunker work and also enlarged a pond on the finishing hole.
They are currently finishing up work on a 27-hole facility near Cleveland and then like
other golf architects are looking around for new work.
French Lick Resort
This fine old lady has been given the ultimate "Nip and Tuck" job that cost her
news owners somewhere north of 380 million dollars. We won't find out the total until
Pete Dye completes his "Swan Song" course in late 2008 or Spring 2009.
Golf-
Bendelow Course
The front nine of the Tom Bendelow course has given way to the casino at French Lick. The
back nine has been remodeled, in the spirit and name of Tom Bendelow and is scheduled to
open this summer. There will also be a state of the art golf instruction area, headed up
by Mike Kerby. While plans are not final, there is some discussion with Golf Digest in
making it one of their schools.
Ross Course
Formerly known as the "Hill Course", the Ross Course has recently undergone a
4.6 million dollars restoration project. The last time we were here, Director of Golf Dave
Harner had the original design work from Ross displayed on the club house walls. The
restoration followed those original plans and has returned the course to Donald Ross'
early vision. Plus, they have added another 450 sprinkler heads, rerouted the cart paths
to make them less intrusive, returned the greens and tees to their more traditional
squared look and 35 bunkers were added back to the course.
This was also the venue for the 1924 PGA Championship, which Walter Hagen won on the final
hole, beating Englishman, Jim Barnes. Betsy Rawls won the 1959 LPGA Championship and
Mickey Wright won it the following year.
Dye Course
Dave Harner has the original napkin that Pete Dye used to describe how he was going to
convert Mt. Airy, the second highest peak in Indiana to a world championship golf course.
At the top of the second highest peak in Indiana, stands the mansion of former owner of
French Lick Resort, Thomas Taggart. The mansion will be turned into a guest house for the
course.
We are preparing some of the video we shot for a future Michigan Golfer Television show.
This promises to be on the scale of the work Dye did at Whistliing Straits, sans the
water. Chris Lutzke is Pete Dye's man in charge on this project. Lutzke, who also did
Hawk's Eye in Bath, is partnered with Paul Albanese and are also currently wrapping up
Sweetgrass in Escanaba.
There are 443 guest rooms in the original French Lick Hotel, all of which have been
outfitted with completely new furnishings. They have a 109,000 square-foot conference
center, full service salon and spa and a new indoor outdoor pool complex and fitness
center.
West Baden
West Baden Springs Hotel was originally named the "Mile Lick Inn" in 1850. The
original structure burned down at the turn of the 20th century and the owner, Lee
Sinclair, took the insurance money and built a world class hotel complete with the world's
largest free-span dome. The record for a domed building was finally beaten by the Houston
Astrodome, almost 60 years later.
French Lick is back and it is a destination to put on your to do list in the future.
http://www.frenchlick.com/default_.asp
You might also want to view a show we did there about four years ago, entitled "The
Caddies at French Lick" It is a fun show that will help you understand some of the
early days at the resort. http://michigangolfer.tv/2003shows/show3/index.html

NEW SHOW ON MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION
==========================================
Harbor Point Golf Club
We are very pleased to bring you the World Premier of our Harbor Point Golf Club show. We
had lots of fun discovering the rich history of this course in our conversations with Head
Professional, Shaun Bezilla. This is one of seven Michigan golf courses that are into
their 3rd century. As we mentioned in an earlier note, the others are 1895 Wequetonsing
Golf Club (Private), 1896 Harbor Beach Golf Course, 1898 Les Cheneaux Golf Club, Saginaw
Country Club, Wawashkamo Golf Club and 1899 Washtenaw Country Club (Private).
Our video begins with some early golf photos and then harkens back to the opening of the
course in 1896. Our narrator, Shaun Bezilla, talks about how the course was built back in
the days before the availability of motorized vehicles. We have video of a team of horses
working the ground to build a golf course, just as they did when this course was built in
1896. Bezilla then takes us for a quick tour of the course as he selects four holes for
us to view. This is a special show and we hope you enjoy it.

WE'VE GOT EMAIL

Hi Art,
Enjoyed your review of Stuart Bendelow's book on his uncle in the Spring issue of Michigan
Golfer; I've added an "Evaluative Review" note tag to the TGIF record for the
book -- which you can see noted below. In fact, if you ever want to add a link from Golf
News or the magazine, etc., directly to our records for any design/maintenance books/items
you discuss, please feel free to do so. One of the neat things users can then do is click
on a link to identify nearby libraries which own the book (if any, that is....), sorted by
distance from where they are. In this case, unfortunately, there's only two libraries so
far in Michigan which apparently own the Bendelow item, including MSU.
http://www.lib.msu.edu/cgi-bin/flink.pl?recno=113715
Every TGIF record has one of these 'deep links' to go directly to a specific item within
the database. They're 'public' and can be used by anyone in the world. They're also
pretty easy to figure out -- if you ever want to use them please do and let me know if
you have questions. Another example would have been for your discussion about The Works
of Art :
http://www.lib.msu.edu/cgi-bin/flink.pl?recno=95092
Always enjoy your good writing and interviews, especially when they're about design &
maintenance issues.....:)
with regards,
Pete

MSU WOMEN'S TEAM STILL IN THE NCAA HUNT
========================================
ANN ARBOR – For a while on Saturday, it looked like the 20th-ranked Michigan State women’s
golf team’s season might end in the NCAA Central Regionals for the second straight
season.
Sophomore Holly Niederkohr (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) said she could remember the team
falling five strokes short of the NCAA Championships last year as the team struggled.
Senior Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) said she was afraid she was playing
her last collegiate round, as the Spartans were in danger of not finishing in one of the
top-eight slots needed to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships.
However, back-to-back birdies on the par-4, 357-yard No. 17 by junior Sara Brown (Tucson,
Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) and senior Rachel Meikle (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Carroll) helped the
Spartans clinch the school’s eighth bid to the NCAA Championships with an eighth-place
finish in the NCAA Central Regionals at the University of Michigan Golf Course. The
Spartans finished with a three-day score of 49-over-par 901 (295-295-311), five strokes
ahead of ninth-place finisher Arkansas.
“I just kept telling the team to grind it out,” Michigan State head coach Stacy
Slobodnik-Stoll said. “Sometimes out here, bogeys are fine. They all hung in there and
that’s why we’re in the eighth slot.”
The Spartans entered the final round in seventh-place, two strokes ahead of both Arkansas
and Arizona. Arizona fired a final round 293 to jump to fifth place while Arkansas
finished the final round with a 30-over-par 314, three strokes behind the Spartans’ final
round 311. Southern California earned the regional title with a three-round total of
17-over-par with Georgia, Texas Christian, Indiana, Arizona, Vanderbilt and Tennessee also
earning bids to the NCAA Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla., with the four-round
tournament beginning Tuesday, May 22.

MARCH GOLF WEATHER GIVETH, APRIL GOLF WEATHER TAKETH AWAY
=========================================================
After an increase in golf rounds played in March wiped out a double-digit decline in the
first two months of the year, Golf Playable Hours (GPH) in April fell 23% for the month
versus April 2006, according to Pellucid Corp. Pellucid said that April_s poor weather
will likely have a major impact on April rounds played. Those figures, compiled by both
Golf Datatech and NGF, will likely be down 10% or more for the month and drag the
year-to-date numbers further into negative territory
The year-to-date GPH through April fell 10% versus a year ago.
Performance across Pellucid's 24 weather-based regions varies but the breadth numbers show
how widespread the carnage was, with 13 of 24 regions showing declines of 2% or more for
the month. This puts the year-to-date breadth ratio (favorable to unfavorable) at 6:16
with the remaining two regions in neutral territory
Interested parties can find more information on Pellucid's weather capabilities at
www.pellucidcorp.com. For more specific information on the Regional Weather Impact
Tracking report and to receive a free sample, interested parties should contact Jim
Koppenhaver at

"CAN I PLAY THROUGH?"
=====================
A man was about to tee off on the golf course when he felt a tap on his shoulder and a man
handed him a card that read "I am a deaf mute. May I play through, please?"
The first man angrily gave the card back, and communicated that "No, he may NOT play
through, and that his handicap did not give him such a right."
He then teed up his ball, and with a mighty swing of his pitching wedge lobbed the ball
right on the green for a par 3.
Just as he was about to put the ball into the hole he was hit in the head with a golf
ball, laying him out cold.
When he came to a few minutes later, he looked around & saw the deaf mute sternly looking
at him, one hand on his hip,
the other hand holding up 4 fingers.
Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to our jokemeister, Dr. Jack Minzey for sending this along.

NUMBER OF CORE GOLFERS HIGHER THAN PREVIOUSLY REPORTED ACCORDING TO NGF
========================================================================
Jupiter, Fla. – According to a new national study of golf participation in the U.S., the
number of Core golfers (adults age 18+ who play eight or more rounds a year) is higher
than previously reported. The Core golfer number is estimated to be 15.0 million as
compared to a figure of 12.5 million published by NGF a year ago.
The study also found that the number of junior golfers increased between 2005 and 2006,
from 4.4 million to 4.8 million kids ages 6 to 17. The overall number of golfers for 2006,
counting anyone age 6 and above who played at least one round of golf during the year, is
estimated at 28.7 million, down 2.0% from the prior year.
The research study was done as a joint effort of the newly formed USA Sports Participation
Study, a collaboration of four associations that have been doing sports and fitness
participation research separately for a number of years: Sporting Goods Manufacturers
Association, National Golf Foundation, Snowsports Industries America and the Outdoor
Industry Foundation.
In February 2007, the partnership surveyed a random sample of 60,169 individuals from the
online panel of Synovate, a leading market research firm. Respondents were asked about
their participation in 114 fitness activities and sports, including golf. The data was
statistically weighted (by gender, age, income, etc.) to reflect the total U.S. population
age 6 and above.
"This year’s study is superior to ones we’ve done in the past, primarily due to the
larger sample size of 60,000," says NGF president and CEO Joe Beditz. "This
larger sample gives us a more detailed view of the American golfer than we have ever had,
and we also have better information on other sports and fitness activities that golfers
engage in."
