MGN ON THE ROAD

Jackson- The Grande Golf Club
The construction on 27 South is almost done and then the gateway to The Grande will be totally open for all to see. The housing dotting the course has increased, as has the beauty of the course. This Ray Hearn and Dozer Doug design has captured the essence of great golf in the Jackson area.

Lake Orion-Indianwood Golf and Country Club
The 2005 edition of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame is now history as Stan Aldridge, Jerry Matthews, Joan Garety and Jeff Roth joined the ranks. Larry Adderley hosted the affair and a fine affair it was. There were a number of Hall of Famers in the crowd and a sprinkling of media.

Stan Aldridge, owner of Indianwood Golf and Country Club, was a reluctant honoree. He thought others were more worthy. However, Aldridge is really one of the main reasons Michigan has a Hall. "Jim Dewling deserves a lot of the credit for getting me involved with the Hall of Fame project. And it has been a pleasure for us to host the Hall since it started," said Aldridge. MGTV will have a show later on in the year of the ceremony.

Okemos-College Field Club
The College Field Club in Okemos has been fashioned after the MacKenzie School of Design. Tom Mead, who is a MacKenzian, restored the MacKenzie masterpiece at Frankfort, Crystal Downs and is now a principal in Old Course Design, the Dublin, Ohio based golf architectural firm.

College Field is receiving some play, but for the most part is still waiting for completion of the infrastructure that will connect all the home sites. The course is just down the road from the MSU Forest Akers 36-hole complex.

Sturgis-Klinger Lake Country Club
There are a couple of courses on U.S. 12 that invite your to drift from the road to plush fairways. Rustic Glen in Saline is one of the inviting courses and the other is Klinger Lake CC. Klinger Lake was built in 1920 with a second nine designed in 1930 by Morey Wells. It is a plush country club and a fabulous beauty.

Pat Hagerty is the PGA Professional, at the club. http://wwww.klingerlakecc.com

Elkhart/Middlebury-Indiana
MGN brushed up against a little history this past week by visiting Oak Hill GC, designed by William Diddel and Christiana Creek CC designed by W.B. Langford. Both were on hand when the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) held its first annual meeting in Pinehurst on Dec. 5, 1947.

The original signatories included, Diddle and Langford and also, William P. Bell, Robert White, Donald Ross, Robert Bruce Harris, Stanley Thompson, William F. Gordon, Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and J.B. McGovern. Three others who were part of that first group but did not attend, were Perry Maxwell, Jack Daray and Robert "Red" Lawrence.

Christiana Creek CC
Designed by William Langford in 1917, the course is currently having some of its bunkers redone by the architectural firm of Albanese and Lutzke. (See related story, "A Horse, a horse, a bunker for a horse.") They are returning the bunkers to the style that was created in Lanford's day.

Sims Oak Hills Golf Course-Middlebury
Brad Smith is the PGA professional and Bryan Weller, the assistant professional at Oak Hills. Sims, a long time golf owner and advocate, gave the course to the city. It is a William Diddel design. Diddel did three courses in Michigan, the original Shanty Creek, the Classic at Otsego and Forest Lake in Bloomfield Hills.

A HORSE, A HORSE, A BUNKER FOR A HORSE
Things got a tad medieval this past week as a team of Belgian horses was dropped off at Christiana Creek Golf Course to help the design team of Albanese and Lutzke created two new bunkers.

The idea came from Daniel Grassi, who is in charge of construction for the project. He mentioned to Paul Albanese that maybe these bunkers created by W.B. Langford in 1917, should be recreated by the same method as they were then, by horses and scrappers. Albanese was blown away, when Grassi said they had a team of horses and the game was on.

It was a hoot, as the two horses recreated bunkers on both the 9th and 18th holes. The Michigan Golfer will bring you the show next week and you can see the fun for yourself.

ALBANESE AND LUTZKE FIRM CHOSEN FOR NEW CHIP-IN'S ISLAND RESORT & CASINO
Paul Albanese and Chris Lutzke http://www.golf-designs.com/ have been named as the design firm for a new golf course at the Chip-In's Island Resort and Casino. This was a prize for the taking and the competition was heavy, with Mike Husby Golf, Peter Jacobsen and Jerry Matthew's Natural Course Design all in the hunt with Albanese and Lutzke.

Construction is set to begin in July with the opening scheduled in 2007. Chip In's resort is located in Harris, just a few miles Northwest of Escanaba.

Paul Albanese and Chris Lutzke have known each other since 1993 when they were both associates with renowned Michigan golf course architect Jerry Matthews

BOOK REVIEWS:
"THE SECRET OF GOLF" by George Peper
"The Secret of Golf", presents 47 innovative, groundbreaking and sometimes outlandish ways to conquer the world's most vexing game. Peper selects the best from golf's rich instructional history. Teacher greats Vardon, Cotton, Hogan, Nelson, Armour, Merrins and Pelz are featured. George Peper, editor of Golf Magazine for a quarter of a century has assembled his instructional A team and feels that this is the last instructional golf book you will need. That is of course, until the next one comes along.

We leave you with this Henry Cotton quote from the book, "All that counts in golf is to find the back of the ball squarely with the middle of the clubface. Any style or method will do and if it enables a player to strike the ball hard, squarely and consistently, then it is a good swing, no matter how it may depart from the classical."

"THE PROOF IS IN THE PUTTING -Jerry Korte and Gary D'Amato
A Review by Terry Moore

First, I want to recommend an excellent instructional book entitled "The Proof is in the Putting" by Jerry Korte and Gary D'Amato, both of who are from Wisconsin. Korte is a well-regarded putting authority and teacher at the Morningstar Golfers Club in Waukesha, WI. Teacher to the some of top players in his state including the 2004 U.S. Senior Amateur champion Mark Bemowski, Korte is also the inventor of the "Yes! Putter" and the "Yes! Stroke Putting and Swing Guide." D'Amato is the longtime and award-winning golf writer for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Now admittedly, I don't read that many instructional books. I find most to be just a rehash of time-honored principles and observations. But knowing and admiring D'Amato as a writer and as a person, I looked forward to reading this book. I wasn't disappointed; in fact, I found "The Proof" to be one of best short game books I've ever read. And yes, I read the whole book, smart aleck.

The book is available for $24.95 and you can order this book by emailing Jerry Korte at yesputter@aol.com

"GOLF GOLDEN AGE" by Rand Jerris with photographs by George S. Pietzcker
This book has been published to honor the 75th anniversary of Bobby Jones winning the famed Grand Slam. The book is a collector must, as it brings forth some extraordinary photography from George S. Pietzcker. Pietzcker has captured the famed golfers of the '10s, '20s, and Œ30s. The text provides both a full-page photo and a full page of text to make it a pleasant and fast read. Many of your will remember the likes of Chick Evans, Walter Hagen, Alex Smith, Harry Vardon, Tommy Armour, Leo Diegel, Gene Sarazen, Macdonald Smith, Henry Picard, Craig Wood and our own Horton Smith. There are many more golfers profiled in this delightful look at the past.

National Geographic Books and USGA publish the book

MACATAWA LEGENDS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB SET FOR JUNE OPENING IN HOLLAND
Ray Hearn was hired to design the Macatawa Legends Golf & Country Club in Holland, Michigan, a college town on Lake Michigan west of Grand Rapids. Shortly after that, he packed up his family and set forth for his new home and a unique golf industry role.

Developer Cal Prins made it clear that Hearn was his choice to oversee the design of Macatawa Legends Golf & Country Club. But he also wanted his designer to be in charge of the operation as the general manager and membership director of Macatawa Legends, which will eventually be surrounded by as many as 700 residential sites.

Macatawa Legends will open to its members June 15 with conditions that Hearn says are the best he's ever seen for one of his course openings.

IT'S THE NEW EQUIPMENT, STUPID
In the first 22 years of the Champions Tour there was only one 60 shot, that by Isao Aoki in 1997. In the last three-plus seasons, five others have followed suit; Walter Morgan, Bruce Fleisher, Jim Thorpe, Tom Purtzer and Craig Stadler.

The field scoring average last week at the Blue Angels Classic was a Champions Tour record 68.175. It topped the old mark, set in this event in 1997, by more than a stroke (69.442). In 1997, the field recorded four eagles and 684 birdies while this year's group tallied 22 eagles and 927 birdies.
