"Jerry Matthews:Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2005"
Jerry Matthews was one of four inductees to the Michigan Golf Hall of
Fame last week. Matthews and his father's firm were responsible for
designing 90 original golf courses and over 100 renovations. In our
show, Matthews chats with another Hall of Fame member, Jack Berry.

We journey to Elkhart, Indiana's Cristiana Creek CC to observe some
bunker restoration on this William Langford 1917 course. Paul
Albanese, of Albanese & Lutzke, and Daniel Grassi, his construction
boss, brought in a couple of Belgium horses to scrape out the old
bunkers. In this show about old time golf course construction.
Albanese also chats about some of his bunker work at Roseland in
Windsor, Tam O'Shanter and century old Washtenaw CC.

MGN ON THE ROAD
Ann Arbor-U of M Course
We stopped by storied U of M Golf Course to bid goodbye to one of our
Michigan Golfer TV hosts, Vanessa Bell, as she prepares to ship out
for a summer on the Swedish Golf Tour. A veteran of the Futures and
South African golf tours, Vanessa is continuing her quest to make it
to the LPGA tour. She will be reporting from time to time on her
journey.
The University of Michigan Golf Course, designed in the late 1920's
by Alister MacKenzie and Perry Maxwell, was in terrfic shape. The U-M
Golf Course is one of only six MacKenzie-designed golf courses in the
United States, including the famed Augusta National. The course
opened in 1931 and was renovated completely in 1994 by Arthur Hills.
Hills restoration focus was to return the course to MacKenzie's intent.
Ypsilanti-Washtenaw CC
Brian Durant, Superintendent of Washtenaw CC, showed MGN around last
week as we took a look at some of the new bunkers that have been
added to this 105 old beauty. Like many other older courses, they have
created a master plan, which allows for an orderly renovation of the
course. Paul Albanese of Albanese & Lutzke, was the architect on
hand for the changes. You can see some of the changes in this week's MGTV
show on "Bunkers, Bunkers, a Horse for My Bunkers"

Huron, Ohio-Sawmill Creek GC, Thunderbird Hills Golf Club
Sawmill Creek-This is one of Ohio's premier resorts, built in 1974.
The resort has shops, a marina, lodge and three restaurants. On the
golf side, they have an excellent course, designed by Tom Fazio.

Thunderbird Golf Club-Thunderbird golf occupies three of the four
exchanges off of Rt. 13 on Rt. 2 in Northern Ohio. The original
course is on the north side of the expressway and the south side has
both the South 18 and the Thunderbird Hills Golf Center. The center
has been listed as one of the 100 Best Golf Shops In America by Pro
Shop Magazine. It has 6,000 feet of space to showcase gear, clothing
and equipment. The center has an indoor and outdoor driving range
and some excellent putting greens.
The original North course was built in 1959 by Bruce Palmer and he
followed up with the South a few years later.

ON THE ROAD-CHINA
THE OTHER HALF JUST RAN A FULL
Congratulations to Jennie McCafferty for finishing The Great Wall
Marathon. Jennie, the online editor for Michigan Running News and my
bride, has been picking up these trophies for awhile. In the past
she has run Chicago, Detroit, Big Sur, Swiss Alpine, Disney and
Millennium marathons. Sadly, I have not been able to recapture the early prowess of my legs of yesteryear. During those heady days, I ran the New
York, Boston, Chicago, Montreal, Toronto and Detroit marathons. The
weaker sex is getting stronger.

HARRY MELLING MEMORIAL INVITATION
This is the traditional kickoff weekend for Treetops golf. Harry
Melling, the original owner was quite a sportsman. He liked his
cigars, beer, race cars and golf. The Treetops sportsbar is stocked
with beers from all over the world, some 100 in total. I remember
seeing a bleary eyed Rick Smith one morning as he was setting up for
a day of lessons. His eyes looked terrible and he had a slight weave
to him as he walked. "Rick what happened, Your eyes look terrible," I
said. "Yeah, you should see them from this side," said Smith. Harry
and I went through a lot of countries last night. A lot of
countries."

BOOK REVIEW-"THE WICKED GAME" by Howard Sounes
by Art McCafferty
Howard spent two years researching this book and did over 150
interviews and I spent a terrific two hours reading it. "The Wicked
Game" is a sometime moniker for the game of golf because of it can be
so difficult, however, in the parlance of today's players, it is a
"wicked game' because of the riches, glamour and popularity.
I have been teaching courses in EMU's College of Business for years
now, and have concentrated my efforts in the area of sports and event
marketing. There are a number of people who were instrumental in
developing this field, Don Canham for one who helped create the field
and the late and great Mark McCormack of IMG was another. Sounes is
able to bring to his reader the importance of the business world in
golf as he takes it from the hand shake deals of the Big Three,
Palmer, Player and Nicklaus to the 40 million dollar deal that IMG
put together for Tiger with Nike.
The book does not spare or sugarcoat the golfing heros of yester year
or those of today. To illustrate this point we bring out a quote from
former PGA Tour Commissioner Deane Beman. Arnold Palmer and Jack
Nicklaus at one time, headed up a group of players that wanted to
fire Beman because some of his innovations, were costing them money. As
commissioner, Beman was trying to build a strong tour for ALL the
players, not just the elite ones. However, their coup failed,
basically because Palmer, Nicklaus et.al. did not have their
collective act together. Beman said in the book, "They're not
interested in the PGA Tour and golf, they're interested in what's
best for THEM. And that's just a fact. It's not a criticism. It's a
fact."
This book came out in hardback last year, but is now in paperback. I
give the book "Four Book Markers"

GOLF PRICES ARE UP; SCORES ARE NOT DOWN
by Bill Pennington, NY Times
New and technologically advanced golf balls fly farther than ever.
Oversize golf drivers hit the ball straighter. Space-age materials
make irons easier to swing. Ergonomically engineered putters roll the
ball more precisely. Golf courses are more plentiful and maintained
better. Instruction is more accessible, at public and private clubs,
not to mention every night on a cable television channel devoted
entirely to golf.
There is even a better golf tee, revamped to let the ball soar longer
and more accurately.
The only thing in golf that has not changed is the average score for
18 holes. Neither the average weekend player nor the world's best
golfers have managed to get the ball in the hole any sooner.
The average 18-hole score for the average golfer remains at about
100, as it has for decades, according to the National Golf Foundation,
an industry research and consulting service.
