__/ LEGENDARY MICHIGAN GOLFER KOCSIS PASSES AWAY
LEGENDARY MICHIGAN GOLFER KOCSIS PASSES AWAY No amateur golfer in the history has been as prolific as Kocsis. He was the captain of two University of Michigan NCAA Championship teams in 1934 and 1935, an individual NCAA Champion in 1936, a six-time Michigan Amateur Champion, and two-time Michigan Open Champion. He was part of three Walker Cup teams, was the low amateur in two Masters Tournaments and two U.S. Open tournaments. He was elected to the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 1982, the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1974, and was named the Golf Association of Michiganıs Player of the Century in 2003. ³He had the best amateur record in the history of Michigan and one that more than likely will never be approached,² said longtime friend and Red Run member Bob McMasters. ³As soon as someone wins as many tournaments as Chuck did as early as he did, they turn pro. So that is why I say his record is unparalleled and unapproachable. Who is going to beat a British Open Champion when they are 18 years old?² Kocsis achieved notoriety in 1931 when he defeated British Open champion Tommy Armour in a playoff to win the Michigan Open. Kocsis grew up on Detroitıs west side with his 15 siblings. He learned the game of golf as a caddy for the Redford Golf Club and proved to be a natural at the sport. He was a Michigan state junior champion in 1927 and ı28 and a Michigan High School Champion in 1928 and ı29. McMasters met Kocsis when he started caddying at Red Run Golf Club in Royal Oak in 1943. Kocsis, who was made an honorary member at Red Run in 1956 when he was the U.S. Amateur runner up, was first McMastersı mentor and then his friend. ³He was already a legend by the time I became his caddy,² said McMasters, ³but he was such a delight to caddy for. He hit all of the greens in regulation, he was always on the fairway, and if you watched closely, you got a free golf lesson as you went along.² The two became friends over the years and when McMasters turned 55 and Kocsis was 77, they became golf partners for several senior tournaments across the nation. Kocsis was a U.S National Open seniors champion in 1969, ı70 and ı79 and an International Seniors Champion in 1970, ı73, ı83 and ı88. Kocsis was a fixture at Red Run Golf Club who could not have lunch at the clubhouse without several people stopping by his table to chat. The veteran golfer was always willing to share stories of his experiences on the links. He had friends in the golf world everywhere and was a lifelong supporter of amateur golf and the Golf Association of Michigan. The GAMıs Medalist trophy for the 36-hole stroke play champion for the Michigan Amateur is named after Kocsis. ³Chuck was not only an ambassador for the GAM, he was an ambassador for the game of golf,² said GAM Executive Director David Graham. ³Early in my tenure with the Association, Chuck sent me a hand written note of congratulations. I donıt remember what was being recognized, but was most impressed by his act of kindness and support toward me as the rookie Executive Director. I feel very fortunate to have met him, talked with him and heard his stories. He was truly a gift to golf in Michigan.² At the request of his son Tom, Kocsis will be buried in his GAM honorary governorsı blazer. ³Everywhere I travel in the country, when I mention that I am from Royal Oak and that I belong to Red Run, the first question is Do you know Chuck Kocsis?ı.² said McMasters. ³He was a great one for keeping in touch with a lot of people. It was not unusual for him to just pick up the phone and call someone he had not talked to in awhile. And if you traveled with him, you saw that he called his kids every day even though they were adults. He wasnıt an outgoing, pat you on the back kind of guy, but when you were alone with him he was really quite talkative.² ³He was a gentleman and just a very good and considerate person.² Visitation will be Thursday evening and Friday at the A.J. Desmond Funeral Home on Woodward, west of 13 Mile Road. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday at Royal Oakıs Shrine of the Little Flower on 12 Mile and Woodward. Kocsis achievements:

*** In another note, Hogan indicated that the rounds at The Tribute were up substantially for the year. An excellent April and a May that held on despite a couple or weeks of rainy weather have pushed up the rounds
The Natural and Marsh Ridge
The Lakes
Harbor Springs-Boyne Highlands The Heather at Boyne Highlands was in spectacular shape and will provide a great test of golf for the Michigan amateurs when they tee it up starting June 20. Special thanks to Julie Ard and Bernie Friedrich for their great hospitality. We also had the opportunity to visit with the First Tee of Boyne Highlands program and witnessed 15 young golfers getting some great instruction from the program director, Shaun Bezilla, Coach Bill O'Neil and some Boyne interns. *More on the Michigan Amateur next week.

*** Himself a bestselling author and radio performer, Shiels helped King select, compile and craft the advice by conducting interviews with well-known people such as former President George H.W. Bush, actor Kurt Russell, two-time U.S. Open golfer Curtis Strange, Ralph Nader, Jamie Farr, Four Seasons Hotel founder Isadore Sharp, Dottie Pepper, Alan Dershowitz, and Irish tenor Ronan Tynan. ³Some of the fatherly advice was touching, some of it funny, and some of it as powerful and simple as one sentence,² said Shiels, who personally contacted the participants. ³Most everyone I contacted loved the opportunity to talk about their Dad.² Shiels, a Michigan native, was able to include some successful people with home state ties, including Sparky Anderson, Governor Jennifer Granholm, Lloyd Carr, Congressman John Dingell, Scotty Bowman, Ted Nugent, Cardinal Adam Maida, Linda Solomon, and current Red Wing coach Mike Babcock. ³I have been a fan of Larry King since the nights I grew up listening to him interview people on his syndicated late night radio program before CNN,² said Shiels, 38. ³I even called-in to his show from time to time.² He finally met King in 1992 when Shiels was producer of the ³J.P. McCarthy Show² on WJR radio in Detroit. Kingıs endorsement adorns the back cover of a bestselling biography Shiels wrote about McCarthy in 1997. Shiels has now authored or contributed to eight books, including collaborations with King, Donald Trump, golf course architect Arthur Hills, Emmy-winning CBS sports commentator Ben Wright, and coming in 2007, ³Access Hollywoodıs² Nancy OıDell. Shiels also authored Golfıs Short Game For Dummies in 2005 with PGA professional Michael Kernicki. His golf and travel articles have been read worldwide in publications such as Golf Magazine, Bermuda Royal Gazette, World Golfer UK, Travel + Leisure, Honolulu Advertiser, Elite Golf Traveler (Far East) and the Northwest Airlines and Midwest Airlines in-flight magazines. Shiels, who has visited over 30 countries, also serves as executive producer of Citadel Broadcastingıs Lansing-based Michigan Talk Network. *** The relocation will enable Palmer to be more active in his roles as president and chairman of the long-established firm, formerly known as the Palmer Course Design Company. Another motivation for the move was the illness of Ed Seay, with whom Palmer formed the company in 1971. Although unable to be fully active, Seay will remain involved with the company as Palmerıs personal counselor. Seay is a past president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. The business is now in its 35th year and has nearly 300 active projects and open golf courses in 38 states and 23 countries, including the Palmer Course at The K Club in Straffan, County Kildare, Ireland, which will receive worldwide attention September 22-24 with the playing of The Ryder Cup. In addition to The K Club, many Palmer-designed courses have been venues for tournaments on various tours in the United States and around the world. Another notable achievement for the company was the creation in the early 1980s of Chung Shan Hot Spring Golf Course in southern China. It was the first new golf course in the country in more than half a century and touched off a golfing boom in that nation to the extent that by 2005 China was hosting more professional golf tournaments than Scotland, the home of golf. In the early 1960s, Palmer and his father laid out the routing and oversaw the construction when the Latrobe Country Club was expanded from nine to 18 holes. Palmer acquired ownership of the club in 1971, the same year he and Ed Seay started working together, and about the same time he and his associates purchased the Bay Hill property. Taken and edited from a Bev Norwood release. Editor's Note. Palmer Course Design designed five Michigan courses, The Legend at Shanty Creek Resort, The Ravines in Saugatuck, King's Challenge in Traverse City, The Preserve in Hartland and Northville Hills in Northville.
