MGN ON THE ROAD Phoenix-Bill Frieder MGN grabbed some airport chatter with Bill Frieder, former U of M coach, who finished his collegiate career in Arizona. For the past five years, Frieder has administered a number of basketball camps, Michael Jordan's Senior Flight School, being one of them. Frieder indicated that the registration fee for the 4-day fantasy Jordan school is $15,000. Players needed to be 35 years plus to participate. They cap enrollment at 150 players and it sells out. The school is held at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas and everything about it is textbook class. Frieder, has been out of coaching for 5-6 years. I asked him, if he was still popping into casinos and reading cards. He affirmed he still does from time to time, but does make a habit out of it. Frieder was a person that possessed the skill to keep track of cards in a deck, particularly when playing blackjack. He was a card counter and could beat the house on the use of this mental skill. Because of his success with his skill, he was persona non grata at casinos. San Diego- Barona Valley Ranch Resort and Casino MGN was in San Diego and L.A. for a few days and had the opportunity to get in a couple of rounds at their Barona Creek GC. It is a new 260 million facility, 30 miles West of San Diego. This community had its beginning in 1932, when a tribe of displaced Native Americans, bought the Barona Valley Ranch. They were the first tribe to legalize bingo on their property and then one thing led to another and they have a quarter of a billion dollar complex, with golf course and a 400 room hotel that fills up each night. The course, a Gary Roger Baird design, has five tees, some dramatic, but mostly decorative bunkers, huge greens, a slope rating of 139 and decorative grasses to enhance its desert look. We found it to be a very challenging and engaging layout. http://barona.com GOLF TELEVISION 24/7 MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION "The Governor Visits Thunder Bay Resort" Governor Granholm, recently stopped by Thunder Bay Resort as part of her Michigan Hidden Treasures Tour. As a coach, I often hear golfers groan or see them drop their head and shoulders after a golf shot. There is disappointment, even though the ball has ended up in a spot that is very playable; but it did not get there according to the plan of the golfer. For example: The ball went down the middle of the fairway, but it did not go very high in the air. Becoming upset about this sort of thing will only hurt your game. Emotions build off of one another to either help or hinder your swing. It is important to stay positive about every shot. We know that being positive means "enjoying what you are doing." Positive people have a good attitude and see the good all around them; at home, work, school and even in a golf shot that didn't go according to plan. Here is a way to practice being positive while helping your golf swing at the same time. At the driving range, start off hitting pitch shots (half swings) and build into full swings with both your irons and woods. Golfers everywhere know that at the end of a good golf swing you will be standing balanced on your target side foot. So, for this game, at the end of each swing, stand for 3 seconds on your target side foot with your belt buckle facing the target and your club over your shoulder. At this time, say out loud something positive about your shot; notice something good about it. Maybe you had terrific balance even though you may have made a swing and missed. Maybe the ball went high even if it did not go as far as you wanted. Sometimes you have to be creative but there is always something good. Try this game with your friends at the range. Check out how much fun it can be for you to challenge yourself while taking notice of what went right instead of what went wrong. You can even do this game during a round of golf. While waiting for your turn, do a practice swing, hold your finish and imagine some positive outcome. The more you do this, the easier it will be to have both a balanced golf swing and be a positive person.
