While he is sparkling things up for one kind of driver, it will also help those that want to venture there to play their nine hole course or participate in the First Tee Program.   Penske, who is watching the work at Belle Isle, like a hawk, says,  "People love what we're doing here. They appreciate what we're doing. This place, if you kept it up like this, and did what you've got to here, let me tell you something, you've got one of the nice places you could ever have." It was a killer day at Dunham and everyone had a sensational time.   I mention it only as a reminder to myself of what a great game we all share.  Hooray Golf. Kevin McKinley is pumped over the continued dominance of their golf school While Judy Mason, did not make the cut on this list, she is also one of the powerhouses of Treetops instruction.  She will have taught over 250 students in her 2007 class and many are Ladies School alums that comeback for refresher courses.  Michigan Golfer Television will be featuring the Ladies Golf School  in an upcoming show.   Golf Digest - America's 50 Greatest Teachers http://www.golfdigest.com/instruction/2007/08/50greatestteachers_intro Rick Smith Golf Academy http://www.treetops.com/index.php?method=golf&subpage=golfacademy Ladies Golf School http://www.treetops.com/index.php?method=golf&subpage=ladiesgolfschool ======================================= WESTERN AMATEUR PROGRAM-- NOW ONLINE ======================================= Caddie Shack ‘Dream House’ Is Reality for University of Michigan Evans Scholars- By Vartan Kupelian Third Time’s a Charm for Bronson LaCassie  World’s Top Amateur Players Take Aim at 105th Western Amateur Title — Players to Watch  Hole No. Nine Gets a New Look -  by Kelly Hill Hole by Hole Tour of the Point O’ Woods Course  Medalist Won Joon Lee Ties Course Record http://michigangolfer.com/westernam/wa07.pdf ================================================= MICHIGAN GOLFER TV-The 105th Western Amateur Preview ================================================= We are delighted to bring you our Western Amateur Preview Show.  We had Robert Trent Jones, the designer of Point O'Woods, step up to the tee to begin the show, picking up some of his thoughts in a 1987 video we shot.  It was Jones who said that " golfers attack par and the architect defends". We then sprinkled into the mix,  some footage from past winners of the Western Amateur; Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickleson, Lanny Wadkins, Steve Melynk, Bubba Dickerson, Tiger Woods, Ryan Moore & Jamie Lovemark.  In addition, we give you a peek or two of  this storied course. This year's Western Amateur starts August 1 and runs through August 5. Enjoy. He was assisted in his endeavor by the Link Up 2 Golf program. The article indicated it was hard work, but they have introduced golf to people who had not had the game in their lives before.   The western portion of the Upper Peninsula gets much of its tourist golf traffic from Wisconsin and Illinois, while the eastern portion gets its traffic from Canada and southern Michigan.  Now, that the heat of summer is finally here, it is the time to make that trip north to play some of these great courses.   We give you an introduction of Upper Peninsula golf in three of our past shows; Pine Mountain, Marquette  and Wild Bluff. Our Pine Mountain show features our hosts Mike Duff and Peter Allen  as they chat about the great Timberstone Golf Course, which is now part of Pine Mountain Resort. Timberstone was one of 17 courses to receive 5 stars from Golf Digest. http://youtube.com/watch?v=5cr4P3H59rE http://michigangolfer.tv/2006shows/pinemountainresort/ In our Marquette show, Mike Beckman who normally does our Wisconsin reporting, returns to his hometown to  interview Marc Gilmore about the new Greywalls course. Frank Guastella also makes an appearance and  talks about Chocolay Downs and his own course, Red Fox Run. http://youtube.com/watch?v=uzaQYSrLWQQ http://michigangolfer.tv/2007shows/marquette/ Finally, Mike Husby and Bill Shelton discuss the merits of the Wild Bluff GC at Bay Mills Resort. http://michigangolfer.tv/2002shows/show6/ Enjoy. ==================================================  WOMEN’S OPEN SETS RECORDS AT CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN  ================================================= The Michigan PGA Women’s Open presented by Century 21 will boast a record purse and the largest field in tournament history when the championship returns to Crystal Mountain’s signature Mountain Ridge course, July 16-18.   In its fifth straight year at Crystal Mountain, the Michigan PGA Women’s Open presented by Century 21 is a three-day event open to professionals and amateurs from across the nation with a 15 handicap or less. The 54-hole event has attracted players from 15 different states and Canada including some who spend time on the LPGA Tour and Futures Tour.   This will be a landmark year for the event which not only features a record $42,500 in prize money but the largest field in its 13-year history. This year’s total of 94 players eclipses the previous record of 92 participants set at Crystal in 2005.   Five former champions will be among the players in the 2007 Michigan Women’s Open presented by Century 21 including defending champion, Kris Tamulis. Tamulis, who has local ties to Onekama, Michigan, recently finished 35th in the U.S. Women’s Open held in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Other former champs who will be in attendance include two-time winner and Crystal Mountain Golf Ambassador, Elaine Crosby, Stacy Snider Olson, Breanne Hall, and Suzanne Green Roebuck who won the very first championship in 1994 and again in 1999.     As in previous years, an impressive roster of amateurs will also take part in the Michigan Women’s Open presented by Century 21. Of late, Jamie Lovemark, 2005 Western Am Champion & 2007 NCAA Individual Champion, was the only amateur to make the cut at Tiger Woods' new AT&T National tournament. Lovemark tied for 45th (67-74-73-71). Ryan Moore, 2004 Western Amateur Champion tied for 25th (74-70-66-72) .  Won Joon Lee of Australia, 2006 Western Amateur medalist, will play in the British Open. Lee qualified in the International Final Qualifying Tournament in Asia.    Ryan Moore, 2004 Western Amateur Champion, also qualified for the British Open at the International Final Qualifying tournament at Oakland Hills.  Western Amateur Championship History- Notable Winners Since 1960 1960-Tommy Aaron 1961-Jack Nicklaus 1963-Tom Weiskopf 1968-Rik Massengale 1969-Steve Melnyk 1970-Lanny Wadkins 1971-Andy North 1973-Ben Crenshaw 1974-Curtis Strange 1975-Andy Bean 1978-Bob Clampett 1979-Hal Sutton 1980 and 1985-Scott Verplank 1988-Chris DiMarco 1991-Phil Mickelson 1992 and 1993-Justin Leonard  1994-Tiger Woods 2004-Ryan Moore 2005-Jamie Lovemark 2006-Bronson LaCassie http://www.thewesternamateur.com/ Thanks a and a Tip of the Tam to Jennie McCafferty for her input on this. ======================================================== POLLACK & HARDING WIN THE E-Z-GO SHANTY CREEK PGA CLASSIC ======================================================== Joe Pollack and Tom Harding shot an 11-under-par 61 in the final-round scramble at Schuss Mountain to finish 21-under par 123 at the 28th Annual E-Z-GO Shanty Creek PGA Classic.   Pollack (Boulder Creek GC) and Harding (Kendall Academy of Golf) opened the 36-hole tournament with a 10-under 62 on The Legend during Monday’s better-ball tournament.  The pairs’ 11-under par 61 on Tuesday lead to a combined score of 21-under-par 123 to claim a 2-stroke lead over Shane Hollandsworth and Jerry Roman, both from Bay Harbor GC.   In addition to splitting the $1800 purse, Pollack and Harding each receive a 10-year exemption to compete in the Tournament of Champions, scheduled for July 20-21 at Boyne Mountain.   It’s even better now.  We’re probably the best “golfing value” in SE Michigan. ($20 weekdays, $25 wknds – 18 holes)  In fact, we are just one entity revitalizing our neighborhood, one step at a time.    In addition, it’s becoming a place where city and suburban golfers come together to enjoy a great game.  Have a great day.   M. Epps, Director Greater Grace Temple Communications http://www.greatergrace.org/specialevents_htm.php ======================================================================== FOUNDERS CHALLENGE TEAMS READY FOR 3RD ANNUAL EVENT IN WEST MICHIGAN ======================================================================== A bevy of top college women golfers, a handful of high school champions and even a member of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame will be part of the field of 24 golfers taking part in the Founders Challenge August 4-5 near Grand Rapids.                Michigan State University women’s golf coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll is the playing captain for the twice-victorious Public Course team, which will be trying again to best the Private Club team headed by Joan Garety, herself a former MSU star and member of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame.  But both playing captains will have plenty of talent on hand.   Garety’s team includes University of Louisville star Jenny Calkins of Greenville, who helped her team to top-ten finish at the NCAA Division I championship this spring.  Others on the Private Club side, include Kim Kester of the University of Toledo, Big Ten golfer Heather Scholten of Northwestern, Western Michigan University's Laura Bavaird, former Michigan Senior Amateur champion Barbara Schmid, and Allison Tyler, a 2006 Michigan high school state individual champion. Slobodnik-Stoll’s side includes 2007 Big Ten champion Rachel Meikle of Michigan State, Stephanie Mory of the University of Illinois, 2007 Michigan “Miss Golf” Award winner Shannon Warner of Livonia, Division II All-America selection Becky Hoffman of Ferris State University, longtime amateur star Susan Campbell of Kalamazoo and incoming Grand Valley freshman Kristina Langton, another Michigan high school individual state champion this spring. The Founders Challenge will be contested at August 4 at The Meadows Golf Club in Allendale  and August 5 at Egypt Valley Country Club in Ada.   Taken and edited from a Tom Cleary relesase .===================================== MORE ABOUT THE ROSS ROGELL COURSE ==================================== A LEADING GROUP OF JEWISH CITIZENS LED BY FAMED DETROITER MAX FISHER ENVISIONED A BEAUTIFUL COURSE ON THE VACANT LAND AND CREATED WHAT WOULD BECOME A MOTOR CITY GEM. IT’S NOW THE ONLY “AFRICAN-AMERICAN” OWNED COURSE IN MICHIGAN. (Detroit) – June 26, 2007 – The year was 1914. Leading citizens of Detroit’s Jewish community including famed Detroiter Max Fisher opened the Phoenix Golf Club, later to become the Rogell Golf Course. Now its new owners, Greater Grace Temple, have preserved a special piece of the city’s history as well as a local “golfing gem.”  “This purchase is very significant in that we have become the ONLY African American owned and operated golf course in the entire state,” says GGT Pastor, Bishop Charles H. Ellis III. “This course and club has a rich legacy dating back to 1914 and that includes the likes of such prominent men as Donald Ross and Max Fisher. We are excited to continue the revitalization of this northwest corner of Detroit with this $2-million investment.” The “New” Rogell Golf Course is now one of only “six” African-American owned courses in the United States. Designed by famed golf course designer Donald Ross, the 18-hole course has been open for  11-weeks and has already stirred excitement among Detroit area golfers, who know the course for its challenging holes, and its design splendor. Players also find plenty of excitement with its rolling hills, as well as the Rouge River coming into play on the back nine. The church purchased the course from the City of Detroit for $2.1 million, and is committed to an excellent maintenance program that will offer golfers a beautiful and first-rate golfing experience at an affordable price. ============== YIP YIP YOORAY ============== New Theory on the Yips Published http://www.marinij.com/sports/ci_6291494 The article above presents a new theory of the yips put forward in The Efficient Golfer, the first golf book written for the single-digit player. During his five years of research for the book, author Robert Anthony Prichard, noticed that a handful of golfers did not let the 100 lbs of centrifugal force generated by the driver on the downswing extend their hands and club.  All five (Snead, Hogan, Trevino, Miller and Faldo) became famous for their ballstriking abilities. But they also all developed the yips that cut short their careers. These golfers were able to prevent any extension of the ir arms and club by over-gripping their driver with their forearm muscles. This overuse resulted in tearing some of the tens of thousands of small muscle fibers that make up these muscles, and scar tissue developed in and around the muscles. This scar tissue built up over time, and the tense, bound up muscles then spasmed when they had to lightly grip their putter. Three modern golfers have adopted the over-gripping strategy in order to improve their ball-striking with disastrous results. Sergio Garcia has gone from #4 on tour in putts per round to #141. Vijay Singh has had to go to the long putter. And Tiger Woods has seen his ranking in putts per round drop from #20 in 2004 to #137 in 2006 after he adopted the gripper strategy in order to better control his drives. More on this new theory can be found here http://www.the-efficient-golfer.com/tiger-woods-
yips.html
http://www.somaxsports.com ======================================================================= NGF: MAY GOLF ROUNDS PLAYED REBOUND; GOLF DATATECH NUMBERS CONCUR ======================================================================= After a dismal April when rounds played in the U.S. plunged 15.1%, May rounds rose 5.4%. Because May typically has the largest volume of rounds in the first five months of the year, the year-to-date deficit was more than cut in half, according to the National Golf Foundation. Year-to-date rounds, which had fallen 9.0% through April, were down only 3.9% through May. The reporting is based on data from operators at more than 1,800 golf facilities. For the full year 2006, rounds played were up 0.8%. Of the 11 regions surveyed, nine showed year-to-date declines. Only the Southwest and Northwest showed increases, up 3.6% and 3.4% respectively. The sharpest decline was in the South Central region, down 12.2% year-to-date. The Mid-Atlantic region was not far behind, down 10.0%. For the five months, play at premium public courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart above $70) was down the least (-1.6%). At value courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart below $40), rounds played have fallen 4.2%. At standard courses ($40-70), play was down 3.3%. Overall, rounds played at all public courses fell 3.7%. Private courses didn't do quite as well, with rounds played for the five months falling 4.6%. According to Golf Datatech, rounds were up 5.5% May 2007 compared to May 2006 and are down 3.0% year to date. The report includes 2,865 reporting courses.  Taken from a NGF release.  ================================================ KENDALL ACADEMY CONTINUES ITS AWARDS HARVEST ================================================ San Francisco doesn’t have the only All-Star game this summer. The equally stellar Kendall Academy at Miles of Golf in Ypsilanti has placed five of its staff members on Golf Digest’s list of the best teachers in Michigan and the voters were all fellow teaching professionals. (The list appears in Golf Digest’s August issue, on newsstands beginning July 10, and accessed by visiting http://www.golfdigest.com )              Not only that, the All-Star game in Francisco next week is a one shot affair. The Kendall Academy “All-Stars” are on the tee all season and led by Dave Kendall, recent winner the Michigan Senior Open and twice voted “Teacher of the Year” by Michigan PGA members. “We’re very pleased and proud of this Golf Digest recognition,” says Kendall, “especially knowing the voting was conducted by our peers in Michigan.”              Joining Kendall (ranked 4th) in the All-Star lineup are Jeff Goble (#3), Tom Tontapanish (#5), Scott Hayes (#12) and Paul Haase (#13). Golf Digest’s voters picked just 17 Michigan instructors and the Kendall Academy’s quintet leads the state from one facility. Kendall, Tontapanish, Haase and Goble had been ranked among the best in the state previously and Goble was on the Rick Smith Golf Academy when it was named among the top 25 schools in the country. (Note: In the Golf Digest ranking, Goble is listed as being affiliated with Rick Smith/Treetops although he now teaches full-time at Kendall Academy.) Taken and edited from an All About Golf release: Terry Moore  terry_moore@comcast.net Tom Cleary, tjcleary@aol.com ===================================================== NGF: POSITIVE OUTLOOK FOR GOLF COURSE DEVELOPMENT ===================================================== Golf course closures may have peaked in 2006 based on 2007 year-to-date figures, according to the National Golf Foundation (NGF). After seeing net negative facility growth in 2006 (closures outnumbering openings), NGF expects openings/closings to return to slightly net positive in 2007. There have been 43 openings so far in 2007 (in 18-hole equivalents) of which 25.5 were public and 17.5 private. Of the total, 72% were entirely new facilities. Given the number of courses under construction that are projected to open in 2007, NGF estimates there will be about 120 total openings in 2007, the same as last year's 119.5. There are currently 291.5 18-hole equivalents under construction, of which 70% are slated to be open to the public; 77% are new as opposed to additions to existing courses. This intense and exciting attempt will take place on Sunday, July 22, 2007 from 9 AM -12 PM on The Alpine course at Boyne Mountain.   The event format requires golfers to be strategically placed on the course’s tee boxes, along the fairways and on the greens. The timing begins once the opening tee-ball is struck, with golfers in the fairway running to hit the ball as soon as it comes to rest.  As golfers on the green sink the putt, a player on the next hole immediately hits the next tee shot.   The current record is 8 minutes, 47 seconds and was set at Bridlewood Golf Club in Flower Mound, Texas.  The 15th annual Tournament of Champions (TOC) begins July 23 at Boyne Mountain and numerous professional players have already signed up to be a part of this challenge.  A minimum of three attempts will be made within the allotted three hour time period.  Hopes are high that together - BOYNE, WJR and Michigan golfers will generate additional exposure for the state’s incredible courses and make Boyne Mountain home of the world’s Fastest Round of Golf!   BOYNE and WJR are seeking golfers to participate in this year’s event; interested parties can contact Dan Turcott at 231.439.4016 or register online.  For more information, please visit www.boyne.com/frog or www.wjr.com.   Taken and edited from a Boyne release: Media Contact: Erin Erns eernst@boyne.com  http://boyne.com ======================================================================= MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION SHOWS NOW APPEARING ON YOU TUBE & iPHONE ======================================================================= Harbor Point Golf Club with Shaun Bezilla Hemlock Golf Club with John Kennedy The Heather at Boyne Highlands with Jack Berry and Bernie Friedrich The Loon Golf Course with Mike Husby The Majestic at Lake Walden with Jerry Matthews and Bill Fountain The Natural and Marsh Ridge with Jerry Matthews and Larry Bowden Timberstone Golf Club with Jerry Matthews True North Golf Club with Jack Berry and Jim Engh The Tribute with Gary Koch, Rick Robbins and Keith Gornick Treetops with Robert Trent Jones Wild Bluff Golf Course with Mike Husby GLSP-Michigan's Golf Portal http://glsp.com *Tentative ============================= HOLE-IN-ONE CLUB-CHRIS BADEN ============================= Chris Baden took an 8-iron out of his bag and aced the 157 yard  5th hole at Devil's Lake Golf Club in Manitou Beach.  Baden is from Ohio and will no doubt cherish his little trip north.   =============================== 2007 MICHIGAN GOLFER CALENDAR =============================== JULY 13-14  91st Michigan Women's Amateur Egypt Valley Country Club http://gam.org 14   MIAGT at Captains Club GC, Grand Blanc  http://www.miagt.com/Schedule 14       Michigan Women's Open Pro-Am, Crystal Mountain Resort  http://crystalmountain.com , Thompsonville 16 Meijer LPGA Classic Pro-Am, Highlands Golf Clubs                 16-18  Michigan Women's Open  Crystal Mountain Resort  http://crystalmountain.com , Thompsonville 16-19  29th Michigan Junior State Amateur Prestwick Village Golf Club      http://gam.org 17   Michigan Players Tour -Lakewood Shores Resort, Oscoda http://michiganplayertour.com 20-21       Boyne's Tournament of Champions Pro Am, Boyne Mountain http://boyne.com 21   Golf Channel Amateur Tour-Copper Hills GC, Oxford http://www.thegolfchannel.com/amateurtour/?v.pos=548&h.pos=0 23-25       Boyne's Tournament of Champions, Boyne Mountain                 http://boyne.com 24   5th GAM Junior Two-Person Team-Great Oaks Country Club http://gam.org 24-25  Michigan Players Tour -Otsego Club, Gaylord http://michiganplayertour.com 28    MIAGT at Cattails GC,South Lyon    http://www.miagt.com/Schedule 28-29  2-Day State Championship  Hunters Ridge GC , Howell http://www.mwgolf.org/ 30-8-5  105th Western Amateur, Point O'Woods G&CC,  Benton Harbor http://www.thewesternamateur.com/ 31     Michigan Players Tour - Yarrow Golf and Conference,Augusta http://michiganplayertour.com AUGUST 6-7  86th GAM Championship -Walnut Hills Country Club http://gam.org 7-8   Michigan Players Tour -Thousand Oaks, Grand Rapids http://michiganplayertour.com 9-10  Michigan State Junior Golf Championship, Shanty Creek Resort http://shantycreek.com 10-12   The Club Men's Golf Championships, Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, Acme Web: http://grandtraverseresort.com 11 Chili's Open for First Tee, Binder Park GC, Battle Creek                 http://www.thefirstteebattlecreek.org 11  MIAGT at The Majestic  GC,   Hartland  http://www.miagt.com/Schedule 13-14   16th GAM Women's Championship- Saginaw Country Club http://gam.org 14   Michigan Players Tour -The Grande, Jackson http://michiganplayertour.com 16 MGCOA Golf Outing and Supplier Day, Gull Lake View, Augusta                 http://mgcoa.org 18  Golf Channel Amateur Tour-Greystone GC, Romeo http://www.thegolfchannel.com/amateurtour/?v.pos=548&h.pos=0 21-22   Michigan Players Tour Canadian Lakes, Stanwood http://michiganplayertour.com 25    4-Woman “Trifecta”  NEW EVENT "War Of The Leagues"  Salem Hills  GC     Northville  http://www.mwgolf.org/ 24-26  MPSGA  State Seniors Open Amateur Championship, Hawk Hollow and Eagle Eye, Bath 25  Golf Channel Amateur Tour-Devil's Ridge GC, Metamora
