While he is sparkling things up for one kind of driver, it will also help those that want to venture there to play their nine hole course or participate in the First Tee Program. Penske, who is watching the work at Belle Isle, like a hawk, says, "People love what we're doing here. They appreciate what we're doing. We usually end up with 6-10 foursomes playing each year and we all have a great time. I got caught up with many lifelong friends for some conversation and a couple of adult beverages. Our foursome won this scramble style tournament one year, with four eagles and 14 pars. It was a killer day at Dunham and everyone had a sensational time. Rick Smith nailed down the top spot in Michigan, 8th nationally, and Rick Smith Academy instructors own 4 out of the top 7 spots in the state which includes Rick Smith, Henry Young, Jason Guss and Jeff Goble. (note: Jeff Goble now teaches mostly with Kendall Academy but still does some schools for the Rick Smith Academy) Jason Guss was included on the Top 20 teachers in the nation under the age of 40. Looking closer at the list, he is one of only 4 instructors 30 or younger, thus you could say he is in the top 4 NATIONALLY who are 30 years old or younger. Basically, he was discussing the energy and ideas that it now takes to create business for a golf course. In the case of the Red Fox Run property, it was all about introducing new people, young and old, to the game. He was assisted in his endeavor by the Link Up 2 Golf program. The article indicated it was hard work, but they have introduced golf to people who had not had the game in their lives before. The western portion of the Upper Peninsula gets much of its tourist golf traffic from Wisconsin and Illinois, while the eastern portion gets its traffic from Canada and southern Michigan. Now, that the heat of summer is finally here, it is the time to make that trip north to play some of these great courses. We give you an introduction of Upper Peninsula golf in three of our past shows; Pine Mountain, Marquette and Wild Bluff. In its fifth straight year at Crystal Mountain, the Michigan PGA Women’s Open presented by Century 21 is a three-day event open to professionals and amateurs from across the nation with a 15 handicap or less. The 54-hole event has attracted players from 15 different states and Canada including some who spend time on the LPGA Tour and Futures Tour. This will be a landmark year for the event which not only features a record $42,500 in prize money but the largest field in its 13-year history. This year’s total of 94 players eclipses the previous record of 92 participants set at Crystal in 2005. Five former champions will be among the players in the 2007 Michigan Women’s Open presented by Century 21 including defending champion, Kris Tamulis. Tamulis, who has local ties to Onekama, Michigan, recently finished 35th in the U.S. Women’s Open held in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Other former champs who will be in attendance include two-time winner and Crystal Mountain Golf Ambassador, Elaine Crosby, Stacy Snider Olson, Breanne Hall, and Suzanne Green Roebuck who won the very first championship in 1994 and again in 1999. Long up against the Buick Open, this year, the Western Amateur now dominates the calendar. The course is designed by the late great, Robert Trent Jones and had, for years, placed in top 100 golf course lists of Golf Digest and Golf Magazine. As you can see from the list below, great golfers have appeared and won the Western Amateur over the years. Of late, Jamie Lovemark, 2005 Western Am Champion & 2007 NCAA Individual Champion, was the only amateur to make the cut at Tiger Woods' new AT&T National tournament. Pollack (Boulder Creek GC) and Harding (Kendall Academy of Golf) opened the 36-hole tournament with a 10-under 62 on The Legend during Monday’s better-ball tournament. The pairs’ 11-under par 61 on Tuesday lead to a combined score of 21-under-par 123 to claim a 2-stroke lead over Shane Hollandsworth and Jerry Roman, both from Bay Harbor GC. In addition to splitting the $1800 purse, Pollack and Harding each receive a 10-year exemption to compete in the Tournament of Champions, scheduled for July 20-21 at Boyne Mountain. Michigan State University women’s golf coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll is the playing captain for the twice-victorious Public Course team, which will be trying again to best the Private Club team headed by Joan Garety, herself a former MSU star and member of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame. But both playing captains will have plenty of talent on hand. Garety’s team includes University of Louisville star Jenny Calkins of Greenville, who helped her team to top-ten finish at the NCAA Division I championship this spring. Others on the Private Club side, include Kim Kester of the University of Toledo, Big Ten golfer Heather Scholten of Northwestern, Western Michigan University's Laura Bavaird, former Michigan Senior Amateur champion Barbara Schmid, and Allison Tyler, a 2006 Michigan high school state individual champion. american-owned-courses-in-the.html ============== YIP YIP YOORAY ============== New Theory on the Yips Published http://www.marinij.com/sports/ci_6291494 The article above presents a new theory of the yips put forward in The Efficient Golfer, the first golf book written for the single-digit player. During his five years of research for the book, author Robert Anthony Prichard, noticed that a handful of golfers did not let the 100 lbs of centrifugal force generated by the driver on the downswing extend their hands and club. All five (Snead, Hogan, Trevino, Miller and Faldo) became famous for their ballstriking abilities. But they also all developed the yips that cut short their careers. These golfers were able to prevent any extension of the ir arms and club by over-gripping their driver with their forearm muscles. This overuse resulted in tearing some of the tens of thousands of small muscle fibers that make up these muscles, and scar tissue developed in and around the muscles. This scar tissue built up over time, and the tense, bound up muscles then spasmed when they had to lightly grip their putter. Three modern golfers have adopted the over-gripping strategy in order to improve their ball-striking with disastrous results. Sergio Garcia has gone from #4 on tour in putts per round to #141. Vijay Singh has had to go to the long putter. And Tiger Woods has seen his ranking in putts per round drop from #20 in 2004 to #137 in 2006 after he adopted the gripper strategy in order to better control his drives. yips.html http://www.somaxsports.com ======================================================================= NGF: MAY GOLF ROUNDS PLAYED REBOUND; GOLF DATATECH NUMBERS CONCUR ======================================================================= After a dismal April when rounds played in the U.S. plunged 15.1%, May rounds rose 5.4%. Because May typically has the largest volume of rounds in the first five months of the year, the year-to-date deficit was more than cut in half, according to the National Golf Foundation. Year-to-date rounds, which had fallen 9.0% through April, were down only 3.9% through May. The reporting is based on data from operators at more than 1,800 golf facilities. For the full year 2006, rounds played were up 0.8%. Of the 11 regions surveyed, nine showed year-to-date declines. Only the Southwest and Northwest showed increases, up 3.6% and 3.4% respectively. The sharpest decline was in the South Central region, down 12.2% year-to-date. The Mid-Atlantic region was not far behind, down 10.0%. For the five months, play at premium public courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart above $70) was down the least (-1.6%). At value courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart below $40), rounds played have fallen 4.2%. At standard courses ($40-70), play was down 3.3%. Overall, rounds played at all public courses fell 3.7%. Private courses didn't do quite as well, with rounds played for the five months falling 4.6%. According to Golf Datatech, rounds were up 5.5% May 2007 compared to May 2006 and are down 3.0% year to date. The report includes 2,865 reporting courses. The equally stellar Kendall Academy at Miles of Golf in Ypsilanti has placed five of its staff members on Golf Digest’s list of the best teachers in Michigan and the voters were all fellow teaching professionals. (The list appears in Golf Digest’s August issue, on newsstands beginning July 10, and accessed by visiting http://www.golfdigest.com ) Not only that, the All-Star game in Francisco next week is a one shot affair. The Kendall Academy “All-Stars” are on the tee all season and led by Dave Kendall, recent winner the Michigan Senior Open and twice voted “Teacher of the Year” by Michigan PGA members. “We’re very pleased and proud of this Golf Digest recognition,” says Kendall, “especially knowing the voting was conducted by our peers in Michigan.” Joining Kendall (ranked 4th) in the All-Star lineup are Jeff Goble (#3), Tom Tontapanish (#5), Scott Hayes (#12) and Paul Haase (#13). Golf Digest’s voters picked just 17 Michigan instructors and the Kendall Academy’s quintet leads the state from one facility. Kendall, Tontapanish, Haase and Goble had been ranked among the best in the state previously and Goble was on the Rick Smith Golf Academy when it was named among the top 25 schools in the country. (Note: In the Golf Digest ranking, Goble is listed as being affiliated with Rick Smith/Treetops although he now teaches full-time at Kendall Academy.) After seeing net negative facility growth in 2006 (closures outnumbering openings), NGF expects openings/closings to return to slightly net positive in 2007. There have been 43 openings so far in 2007 (in 18-hole equivalents) of which 25.5 were public and 17.5 private. Of the total, 72% were entirely new facilities. Given the number of courses under construction that are projected to open in 2007, NGF estimates there will be about 120 total openings in 2007, the same as last year's 119.5. There are currently 291.5 18-hole equivalents under construction, of which 70% are slated to be open to the public; 77% are new as opposed to additions to existing courses. The championship will be held at Hunter’s Ridge Golf Course in Howell. Players of all experience levels are welcome, and especially junior girl golfers. There will be three divisions of competition: Regular, Senior, and Junior. Juniors will play only on Sunday, July 29. The Regular and Senior divisions will have a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start on both days. Cost is $140.00 for MWGA members, $160.00 for non-members, and includes golf, cart, range, prizes, continental breakfast both days, and lunch after play on Sunday. Taken and edited from a Joyce Harlukowicz release ======================= FASTEST ROUND OF GOLF ======================= Boyne and News/Talk 760 WJR are again attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the Fastest Round of Golf (FROG). This intense and exciting attempt will take place on Sunday, July 22, 2007 from 9 AM -12 PM on The Alpine course at Boyne Mountain. The event format requires golfers to be strategically placed on the course’s tee boxes, along the fairways and on the greens. The timing begins once the opening tee-ball is struck, with golfers in the fairway running to hit the ball as soon as it comes to rest. As golfers on the green sink the putt, a player on the next hole immediately hits the next tee shot. The current record is 8 minutes, 47 seconds and was set at Bridlewood Golf Club in Flower Mound, Texas. The 15th annual Tournament of Champions (TOC) begins July 23 at Boyne Mountain and numerous professional players have already signed up to be a part of this challenge. A minimum of three attempts will be made within the allotted three hour time period.
