When opportunities presented themselves, I took advantage of them,” said Harris, who finished with a three-round total of 69-64-71—204 (-12). Harris, 29, began the third and final round with a one-stroke lead over Brian Cairns, a professional from The Highlands Golf Center in Milford, who shot 72 in the final round to finish as runner-up, two shots behind Harris. All three rounds were played on Boyne Mountain Resort’s 6,938-yard Alpine Course. “Winning this means I’ll have the money to try to qualify for the PGA Tour again this fall. Hopefully I’ll make it this time, but if not, I’ll be back here again next year,” said Harris, a University of Michigan alum who competes on the Canadian Tour. He collected $12,000 for the win – his fifth BOYNE Tournament of Champions victory. He won in 2000, ’02, and ’05 through ’07. “Another year with my name on the trophy. Being a five-time champion is pretty special.”   During the final round, Cairns birdied the first hole, and Harris bogeys on the second and third holes gave Cairns an early, but temporary, lead. “I was upset, but I knew there was a lot of golf to go. I had 15 holes left to play and just had to ride it out. I knew if I hit it in the right spots on the back nine I would make some birdies,” said Harris. “It was just an inner confidence that it would turn around and things would be alright.”  “I lost my patience on the 12th and 13th holes. I hadn’t hit it in the rough all week but today I was in the rough four or five times. I had too much adrenaline going and got too pumped up,” said Cairns, who has a 2000 Michigan PGA Championship win among his titles. “I learned a lot from Michael about how to manage your game when you’re not playing well. He’s a good champion and a good guy. I expect him to do very well in the future.” Cairns was proud of the way he played the par-5 last hole. He used a 241-yard 3-wood to hit his ball over a creek to reach the green in two shots. “I didn’t give up. I had an eagle putt but made the birdie to secure the runner-up spot,” he said. Andy Matthews, a 27-year-old touring professional from Ada, finished in third place at 9-under-par. Ian Harris, an amateur from Bloomfield Hills, was the lowest scoring amateur in the event, with a three-round total of 209 (-7). Suzy Green Roebuck, a past Michigan Women’s Open champion, was the lowest-finishing woman in the event, finishing the tournament at 4-under-par. 128 champions of all varieties competed against each other from staggered tees, until Harris emerged from a field full of professionals, amateurs, women, men, juniors and seniors. All entrants qualified to compete by capturing an important, sanctioned state title at some stage in their playing career. 40 of the competitors were amateur golfers. The winner, in addition to prize money, receives a green blazer and a membership to the Country Club of Boyne. Oakland Hills CC, Michigan's most storied course,  has been  the  site of 15 major championships; six U.S. Opens, two U.S. Senior Opens, U.S. Women's Amateur, U.S. Men's Amateur, Western Open, Carling World Open; the 35th Ryder Cup in 2004; and three PGA Championships. Oakland Hills was born the same year as the PGA of American and its first golf professional was fittingly,  Walter Hagen. It was a perfect afternoon for golf and the course was spectacular.  It was a very special day for golf writers, photographers and videographers.  (See PGA article "Jones' Renovations Result in Longer, More Menacing 'Monster'" at http://www.pga.com/pgachampionship/2008/news/pga08_renovations041907.ht

Charley Hoffman (35th). Ryan Moore (42nd) and John Senden (45th).  They were part of the back story of an incredible golf tournament.  Oakland Hills was one of only three International sites to have an Open qualifier this year. http://scoring.opengolf.com/leaderboard.sps?itourno=2007060&optsel=pos ====================================================================== THE GLACIERS, FORMERLY THE GLACIER GOLF CLUB, SET TO REOPEN AUGUST 1 ====================================================================== The original Glacier Golf Club was designed by William Newcomb and opened for play in 1993.   In the past year, the course has had a redo from the Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates firm.  Golfers will find the usual adjustment of former tees, greens and bunkers in the redo. Basically, the owners felt that the course needed to be upgraded to match up with the upscale homes and condos that surround it. http://glaciersgolf.com =============================================== TICKETS NOW ON SALE FOR 2008 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP  =============================================== The PGA Championship, one of golf's premier events conducted by The PGA of America, announced the start of general ticket sales on this past Monday, Oakland Hills Country Club will host The PGA of America's 90th PGA Championship, the Season's Final Major, on the famed South Course, August 4-10, 2008. LEFT OFF ===================================================== Tim Hygh dropped us a note, pointing out the an article by the Lansing Pulse http://lansin
gcitypulse.com/  that
had some nice things to say about Michael Patrick Shiels and his morning Lansing drive time Big Show.  Shiels, formerly the producer of the J. P. McCarthy Show, enjoyed the life of a freelance writer, but not the pay.  He has written or ghosted a number of books and had his share of articles in various golf publications, including ours.  Shiels worked for Hygh in some of the media rooms on the Michigan golf circuit and Hygh was so impressed with him that he hired Shiels to take over from then host, Dave Scott. Note: Here is a look at Michael Patrick  Shiels as he interviewed film director and actor, Bill Paxton on his "Greatest Game Every Played" media tour.   Western Amateur Preview Show We had Robert Trent Jones, the designer of Point O'Woods, step up to the tee to begin the show, picking up some of his thoughts in a 1987 video we shot.  It was Jones who said that " golfers attack par and the architect defends". We then sprinkled into the mix,  some footage from past winners of the Western Amateur; Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickleson, Lanny Wadkins, Steve Melynk, Bubba Dickerson, Tiger Woods, Ryan Moore & Jamie Lovemark.  In addition, we give you a peek or two of  this storied course. This year's Western Amateur starts August 1 and runs through August 5. Enjoy. "'You're Still Away' is the best golf collection I've ever read in years.  Sullivan is a graceful writer and his powers of observation are preternaturally sharp.  If you've got Wodehouse, Wind and Jenkins on your bookshelf, you'll want to make room for Sullivan."    Since I amazingly have Wodehouse, Wind and Jenkins on my bookshelf and I also totally agree with Garrity's assessment of Sullivan's writing, I have found the room. "Everything about it is fun," said Kim Kester of Grand Rapids, a graduate of the University of Toledo who will be part of the private club team in the Aug. 4-5 amateur event at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University and Egypt Valley Country Club. "It's the event I've looked forward to all summer. I think everybody looks forward to it -- the team competition. It's like college golf, only with people you usually just play against." Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member Joan Garety of Ada and Michigan State University women's golf coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll serve as the team captains. Garety, an Egypt Valley member, heads the private club team, and Slobodnik-Stoll heads the public team, 2-0 in the event. Better-ball foursomes matches are the first-day format at The Meadows. The final day at Egypt Valley is singles play. Egypt Valley recently hosted many of these players in the Michigan Women's Amateur. Laura Bavaird, a Western Michigan University golfer crowned the state champion at Egypt Valley, will be a member of the private team. Also on the private team are a host of local golfers, including Kester and Egypt Valley members Barb Schmid and Allison Tyler, a Grand Valley golfer. Jenny Calkins of Greenville, a University of Louisville golfer; Heather Scholten, a former Northwestern golfer; and Susie Barbour of Michigan State are others with local ties. Rounding out the private roster are Ashley Bauer, a University of Michigan golfer;Shasta Averyhardt, a Jackson State University golfer who was runner-up to Bavaird in the state amateur; Jennifer Domagalski, a Michigan State golfer; and Caitlin Bennett, a Grand Valley golfer. Slobodnik-Stoll's public team will include local golfers Michelle Boogaard, who plays for Grand Valley; former Eastern Michigan golfer Kelly Boogaard and Kristina Langton, a Catholic Central golfer headed to Grand Valley. Others on the team include Rachel Meikle of MSU; Stephanie Mory, a University of Illinois golfer; Shannon Warner, a prep standout from Livonia; Sue Campbell of Kalamazoo, Indiana University golfer Mary Vajgrt, Ferris State golfers Becky Hoffman and Missy Ward and Grand Valley golfer Ashley Smith. "These players really represent the best of golf in this region," said Slobodnik-Stoll, who led her team to the Big Ten Conference title and a berth in the NCAA championships this year. "It's a nice change of pace from stroke-play competitions." The Founders Challenge started in 2005 under the sponsorship of Founders Bank & Trust of Grand Rapids. =============================== 2007 MICHIGAN GOLFER CALENDAR =============================== JULY 28    MIAGT at Cattails GC,South Lyon    http://www.miagt.com/Schedule 28-29  2-Day State Championship  Hunters Ridge GC , Howell http://www.mwgolf.org/ 30-8-5  105th Western Amateur, Point O'Woods G&CC,  Benton Harbor http://www.thewesternamateur.com/ 31     Michigan Players Tour - Yarrow Golf and Conference,Augusta http://michiganplayertour.com
