MG ON THE ROAD
Hartland-Dunham Hills
It is always a pleasure to visit Dunham Hills in Hartland. The course started in the late 60's has continue to mature into one of Southeast Michigan's finest courses. They have made some significant changes over the years, erecting a beautiful clubhouse, adding more length here and there, changing some greens to make the holes more fair and by maintaining the course and keep it in top shape. Jim Nilan is the GM, Mike Sranger is the golf professional and Ethan Hawker the assistant.

We did our CHOK Radio show from the course, and Mark Castle, a visitor from Arizona was our guest.

ALLARD AND PASCO WIN SHANTY CREEK CLASSIC
by Tim Hygh

Jerry Pasco made a two pronged prediction a few months ago. Both have now come true after he and playing partner Ken Allard won the 25th Shanty Creek Classic. The Grosse Ile Country Club assistant professional predicted he and Allard would win this event before the season began. The prediction also included a victory at the Senior Junior Champions which came true earlier this summer at Plum Hollow CC.

The great seer also happens to be a prodigious driver of the golf ball. His power along with Allard's finesse and knack of winning made for a fine team approach as they shot a final round 11-under par 61 on the Schuss Mountain Golf Course at Shanty Creek in a scramble format.

"We started out with three straight pars and it was looking a little bleak out there. We were making quality shots but couldn't make any putts drop. Kudos to Kenny for keeping an even temper which keeps me focused and it really paid off in the end." Pasco said. Allard (Detroit GC) added, "There is some pressure, we were trying hard, maybe a little too hard but from the 6th hole on every hole we didn't birdie was a surprise to us. We thought we'd birdie out from the 6th hole on." That prediction almost came true too as they kept the lead all day by birdieing 10 of their last 12- holes.

Two venerable teams finished one shot back. 3 time Shanty Creek Classic champions Jeff Gniewek (Prestwick Village CC) and his partner Frank McAullife (Ann Arbor CC) were runners up as was the team of Mick DeKorver and Doug Sefcik of Sunnybrook CC.

This is Allard's 13 Michigan PGA sanctioned championship and the 3rd for Pasco who will both be playing in next week's Detroit Newspapers Tournament of Champions at Boyne Mountain.

The most dramatic move up the leaderboard came from the team of former champions John Gregus (Copper Ridge GC) and Guy Samples (Owosso CC). They tied a tournament record with a scramble score of 16-under par 56 and a tie for 4th.

Another heady move was made by the Grand Rapids based husband and wife team of Joe and Amy Pollack. Their 10-under par round pushed them into a tie for 8th place.

Pasco the predictor summed up the tournament succinctly, "I love coming up here and playing golf with Kenny. I wanted to do something special and have a lot of fun doing it and I did." And both drove home with an extra $1,050 in their pockets and time to predict their next victory.

The Concession-with Tony Jacklin and Vanessa Bell
A moment of golf chivalry and grace will be immortalized in a new golf course being built in Florida, The Concession. Join our host, Vanessa Bell as she chats with one of the most famous golfers of her own country England, Tony Jacklin. It was during the final match in the 1969 Ryder Cup, between Jacklin and Jack Nicklaus, whenJack Nicklaus conceded a two foot Jacklin putt on the final hole. The concession gesture meant that the Ryder Cup match for that year would end up in a tie and was viewed as a great sportsmanship gesture..

THE 10 LAWS OF NATURAL GOLF
The shortest distance between any two points on a golf course is a straight line that passes directly through the center of a very large tree.

There are two kinds of bounces: unfair bounces, and bounces just the way you meant to play it.

You can hit a 2-acre fairway 10% of the time, and a 2-inch branch 90% of the time.

Every time a golfer makes a birdie, he must subsequently make two triple bogeys to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe.

If you want to hit a 7-iron as far as Tiger Woods does, simply try to lay up just short of a water hazard.

To calculate the speed of a player's downswing, multiply the speed of his backswing by his handicap. Example: backswing 20 mph, handicap 15, downswing 300mph.

There are two things you can learn by stopping your backswing at the top and checking the position of your hands: how many hands you have, and which one is wearing the glove.

Hazards attract; fairways repel.

You can put "draw" on the ball, you can put "fade" on the ball, but no golfer can put "straight" on the ball.

A ball you can see in the rough from 50 yards away is not yours. Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Jim McIntyre for this timeless piece.
