MGN ON THE ROAD Traverse City Chateau Chantal This missive is being prepared at the magnificent Chateau Chantal, a B & B on Old Mission Peninsula http:/chateau/chantal.com and one of the Sip locations for the Park Place Hotel "Sip and Chip" program in the fall. John Jessup, who introduced this program to us with Bill Knopp of the Park Place, started his first week at the Traverse City Convention and Visitors Bureau. John formerly worked at High Point. Last year, a late spring freeze killed the buds and knocked out 90% of their harvest. However, both the Leelanau Peninsula Vintners Association and the Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula seem to be enjoying a great growing season and should have a great "Sip and Chip" season in the fall. You can visit many of the Leelanau wineries on our Michigan Travel Channel http://michigantravel.tv/2004wineries/
Kingsley Club Ed Walker and his partner, Art Preston, wanted to "put something on the face of this earth that would be a monument to golf." The MG had done a story on the course a few years ago and dropped by to see how things had progressed. Actually, there was more to the visit than just an update. When we chatted with Marc Gilmore, the PGG Professional at the new Marquette based Greywalls GC last fall, conversation got around how they selected the architect. "We had had presentations from a number of architects and had also done a number of site visitations," said Gilmore. "However, when we turned into the drive at the Kingsley Club, our committee unanimously said, this is the look we have been searching for." It was then that we chose Mike DeVries as our designer. The Kingsley Club was DeVries first design and he later did Diamond Springs and Pilgrim's Run. Ed Walker indicated that they had considered a number of architects for The Kingsley Club and were swayed by Fred Muller, the PGA pro at Crystal Downs. "We had our own ideas for the golf course," said Walker. "We also believe in the Golden Rule, that being who ever has the gold, rules. We felt that during our interviews that Mike was not only knowledgeable about golf course design, but was also every amenable to some of our suggestions." The Kingsley Club Mission Statement: "The Kingsley Club is a golf club, nothing more or less. It exists for the enjoyment of its members and their guests. A challenging but enjoyable test of golf, coexisting with the environment; a place with few rules and few starting times; where kindred spirits gather to have fun and make friends; a place of courtesy and good manners created for camaraderie, good cheer and good will." http://kingsleyclub.com

DALCOROBBO AND BETHUNE WIN SHANTY CREEK CLASSIC
The first round leading team of John DalCorobbo and Andy Bethune hung The difference was the 459-yard par 4 16th, which is downhill with a dogleg left. It was the site of Makoski and Kondratko's bogey and heroics for Bethune. DalCorobbo is the more tournament tested player on the team and he was pleased to be able to watch Bethune play so well. "Andy hit some great shots on the back." On 16, Andy just hit a fabulous tee-shot to 115 yards. I hit it over the green and then he hit it to 33 feet and I made the putt. The father/son team of John and Jack Seltzer finished another shot back in third. Taken and edited from a Tim Hygh release
TREVINO'S GREATEST SHOT --Lee Trevino's acceptance speech after being honored by the Captains Club at this year's Memorial Tournament. Noted golf writer Jaime Diaz introduced Trevino. Following is a portion of the transcript of the proceedings.-- "The thing and the question they have always asked me is what is the greatest shot you've ever hit in your life time? Man, we have hit a lot of good ones. And we have hit a lot of them. But the greatest shot that I can remember ever hitting was actually where Jack won the '63 PGA at D A C in Mesquite Texas. I was actually qualifying for the U.S. Open, go to Baltusrol that year, which Jack won. I -- but it was a par-5, about the 13th hole, I had driven the ball a little too far right. In the rough. There's a little creek down on the right. My ball was on an uphill lie. For are some of you old timers that are here maybe you remember this, it was an Irving King 4-wood. An old laminated 4-wood. You probably, Charles remembers those clubs. I took this 4-wood out, had to go over a tree, I was never a high ball hitter. I was always hitting the ball low. Hit it right over this tree, 235, on the green, holed it for eagle, ended up qualifying for Baltusrol, playing in Baltusrol, finishing fifth and by being a Class A professional I was invited to participate in Cleveland the next week. If I made the cut in Cleveland, being a Class A, I could pla y in the American golf classic. And then I could go on and on and on. I ended up making 13 cuts that year, won $47,000. There will be guys tip that much this week here. I win $47,000, finished like 40th on the money list, gave me an exemption for '68. Now that's how I got started."

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Art, Nice blurb on Janina Parrott Jacobs and her tv show. I knew her when we were at Ferris State together. That is the college that my father started and founded the Professional Golf Management program at, now at 18 universities. The grill at the club is called the "Founder's Grille" is named for my father, Don Perne' who now lives in Toledo, Ohio. He also is a PGA Master Golf Professional. There are, I believe, 220 in the world. He was number 6. Having myself, been a golf professional for over 25 years, the last being at the Inverness Club, I confess it was a great time in my life, as well as my fathers. You see, he was the Golf Professional/Director of Golf at Inverness from 1981 - 1993 and Host Professional to both the 1986 and 1993 PGA Championships. He also is now the President of IPI Michigan, our photography company. We are the only Michigan photographers that take every pro-am photo at the Farmer's Charity Classic, Ford Senior Player's Championship, Buick Open and the Ryder Cup Pro-ams. I just thought you may want to know that all the tour event pro-am photos in Michigan are photographed by a Michigan company based in Ann Arbor. We have discussed this before. I just thought you may want to know about the tours, us and the pro-am photography.
Keep up the good writing, it is well worth reading.

SPORTS MEDIA GROUP PRESENTS FRANCIS QUIMET CLASSIC Sports Media Group has released the first major work in its new Rare Golf Library, Francis Ouimet's memoir, A Game of Golf. Legendary golfer, historian, and golf course architect Ben Crenshaw says of this classic book "my copy of Ouimet's book was given to me in 1968 at the USGA Junior Championship. It remains one of my dearest possessions. The jacket is a little worn, but its contents are just as exciting as the first time I thumbed through the pages." In addition to A Game of Golf, SMG plans to release three more volumes in the series later this year, and 12 volumes in 2005. According to SMG associate publisher, Skip DeWall, "The Rare Book Library is our most ambitions and exciting agenda. We see these classic books as the foundation of the modern game. There is significant interest in seeing these vintage books broadly distributed to both the general golf consumer and to golf companies, country clubs, and other golf courses and resorts."
Copies of A Game of Golf will hit the bookstores on September 1, 2004. Skip DeWall-Sports Media Group sdewall@annarbormediagroup.com

LONG DRIVES AND A BUICK CHAMP ON THIS WEEK'S MICHIGAN GOLF LIVE! Michigan Golf Live will celebrate the "long ball" and preview the 2004 Buick Open on this Saturday's program. One of the most amazing moments ever recorded in golf took place in 1974 when then 64-year old Mike Austin drove a golf ball - in competition - 515 yards. That "bomb" was recorded in the Guiness Book of World Records and a legend was born. Remember, Austin did this with persimmon-head and old technology ball - way ahead of his time. Saturday morning, his protege and adopted "son," Mike Dunaway will share the secrets of Mike Austin's length in an exclusive MGL feature interview. MGL is heard each Saturday morning from 8-10am on 11 stations around the state and is hosted by Bill Hobson, Jon Bloom, and Todd Arner. For more information www.michigangolflive.com

NSGA SURVEY RANKS THE 'MOST ACTIVE' STATES; MICHIGAN IS NO. 1 Among the 11 largest states, making up more than 56% of the U.S. population, residents of Michigan are the most active, according to an analysis of data contained in "Sports Participation in 2003 - State-by-State," a report published annually by the National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA). NSGA's Sports Participation index indicates how likely it would be for a person in a given state to participate in a specific sport or activity. In the NSGA Index, the national average for each sport or activity equals 100. The index is created by dividing a state's percentage of participants in a particular activity by its percentage of the U.S. population and then multiplying by 100. Michigan, for example, has 7.9% of the total participants in golf and 3.6% of the U.S. population. This yields an index of 209, indicating residents of Michigan are more than twice as likely to play golf than the national average. Among the most populous states, Michigan has NSGA Participation Indices of 100 or more in 24 of the 34 activities surveyed for 2003. Those sports/activities are backpacking (115), bicycle riding (132), billiards/pool (130), boating (power/motor) (137), bowling (148), camping (140), exercise walking (100), fresh water fishing (139), football (tackle) (126), football (touch) (100), golf (209), hunting w/firearms (146), inline skating (124), paintball (114), running/jogging (127), skiing (downhill) (113), snowboarding (122), soccer (111), softball (147), swimming (115), target shooting (121), tennis (103), volleyball (105), and work out at club (116). California (11.0% of the U.S. population) and North Carolina (3.0%) ranked second with 22 participation indices of 100 or more, followed by Illinois (4.4%) with 20, New York (6.7%) with 19 and New Jersey (3.0%) with 18. In compiling this study, NSGA analyzed state-by-state participation for the following 34 activities: Aerobics, backpacking, baseball, basketball, bicycling, billiards/pool, boating (power), bowling, camping, exercise walking, exercising w/equipment, fishing (fresh water), fishing (salt water), football (tackle), football (touch), golf, hiking, hunting with firearms, mountain biking (off road), paintball games, roller skating (inline), running/jogging, scooter riding, skateboarding, skiing (downhill), snowboarding, soccer, softball, swimming, target shooting, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and work out at club.
The survey is available to NSGA members for $235.00. Non-members pay
$325.00. For more information, contact the NSGA Research Department,

19TH HOLE -THINGS YOU WOULD NEVER KNOW IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE E-MAIL 'Stewardesses' is the longest word typed with only the left hand, 'lollipop' with your right. The cruise liner, QE2, moves only six inches for each gallon of diesel that it burns. The name of all the continents end with the same letter that they start with. 'Typewriter' is the longest word that can be made using the letters on one row of the keyboard. Women blink nearly twice as much as men. If you are an average American, in your whole life you will spend an average of 6 months waiting at red lights. In most advertisements, including newspapers, the time displayed on a watch face is 10:10. The winter of 1932 was so cold that Niagara Falls froze completely solid.

GAYLORD GOLF MECCA SHINES IN TV SPOTLIGHT By Paul Bairley Michigan residents have long been aware of the wonderful array of beautiful golf courses in northern Michigan. This is especially true of the Gaylord area, where the concentration of quality golf resorts and championship tracks have made the Gaylord Golf Mecca Michigan's #1 golf destination. Now, Gaylord is finally getting the national attention it deserves, in large part due to two nationally televised programs. The Big Break- a weekly series aired on the Golf Channel challenges selected amateur golfers in a survivor-like skills test that whittles them down to one finalist. The show, hosted by Rick Smith and Katherine Roberts, was staged at Treetops Resort. The second program, the Tylenol Par 3 Shootout, is the one that has really given Gaylord national attention, according to Paul Beachnau, Executive Director of the Gaylord Area Convention and Tourism Bureau. "The Par 3 Shootout has provided Gaylord with virtually instant name recognition. Whenever we exhibit at golf shows in the region, everyone knows of Gaylord due to this unique professional event." An enormously popular tourney, it has helped attract golfers throughout the nation to Gaylord to play its fabulous courses and enjoy the hospitality and natural beauty the area offers. Televised on ESPN, the Par 3 Shootout pits four PGA golf greats in a par 3 contest held at the Threetops course, Rick Smith's first golf course design. Players compete for $180,000 in "closet to the pin" money, $360,000 in skins, and $1 million for each and every hole-in-one. Note* Readers can click onto http://michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/show5/index.html for a show we did with Vanessa Bell and Rick Smith on the Big Break. 59TH GAM CADDIE CHAMPIONSHIP *Top 5 scores were used out of the 6 person team, to calculate the team total.* Monday, July 12, 2004 at Western Golf & Country Club
