A fierce storm rolled through the north this past week, but the folks at Crystal Mountain cleared the the Ridge course of downed trees and bade the game go on. Michael Patrick Shiels writes about the results of the Michigan Women's Open in another space here, so I will not doddle too much. I would only say that it was great seeing Brad Dean, Rodger Jabara, Joan O'Neill and Jim MacInnes on the Crystal Mountain side, and Kevin Helm, David Fox and other members of their team. The course was in great shape and it was fun to reacquaint myself with some of those pictresque Bill Newcomb holes. Crystal Mountain will be celebrating 50 years of service this year.

KRIS TAMULIS WINS MICHIGAN WOMEN'S OPEN

LPGA professional Kris Tamulis shot a final round 70 to win the $40,000 Michigan Womens Open presented by Century 21 Wednesday. Tamulis, 25, who summers in Onekama, finished two strokes ahead of LeAnna Wicks, a 26-year-old professional from Brighton, MI, who closed with a 71. Tamulus completed the tournament, staged on Crystal Mountain Resorts Mountain Ridge Course, with rounds of 72-75-70217 (1-over-par). She began Wednesdays final round two strokes off of the lead.

I wasnt ever out of it. As the day wore on, I think maybe it was getting to some of the other girls. The pressure builds. I just kept doing what I do. I kept hitting the greens - letting other people make mistakes, said Tamulis. Everyone else was starting to hit it in not so fantastic places. I was just going to keep going on because I cannot control what theyre doing, but I had legitimate birdie chances throughout most of the back nine.

Tamulis, who collected $5,500 for the victory, has won $54,640 playing on the LPGA Tour this season. She arrived back in northern Michigan at 1 a.m. Sunday night after competing in the LPGAs Jamie Farr Classic in Toledo over the weekend.

I guess the pressure of people knowing I play on the LPGA means people expected me to play well here, so its nice to play here and win, said Tamulis, who made three birdies and two bogeys. Im proud of the way I kept going at the end and giving myself chances to increase my lead.

The 25 year-old practices regularly at Crystal Mountain since she summers with her parents at Andys Point in Onekama.

She was here for two weeks at the end of June and came out to play from time to time, said Crystal Mountains director of golf Brad Dean.At LPGA tournaments they announce my name and where I am from and Ive always said Michigan. My parents and sisters still live here and I am proud to be from Michigan, said Tamulis, who attended Florida State University and maintains a residence in Naples. I still say pop instead of soda.

Tamulis will compete next August 3 in the British Womens Open at Royal Lytham and St. Annes in Lancashire, England.Im going to cool it for the next couple of days and not worry about it too much. I hit good shots today which make me feel better. I have some things to work on before I go to England, but Im not going to worry about it for the next couple of days, she said.

Wicks, who collected $4,000 as runner-up, finished T-6 in the Michigan Womens Open in 2003  her best previous finish. She withdrew from last years competition during the third round due to a pulled back muscle.

Professional and amateur golfers from 13 different states competed in the $40,000 Michigan Womens Open presented by Century 21 on Crystal Mountain Resorts Mountain Ridge course.

MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION TO PROVIDE DAILY COVERAGE OF NATIVE AMERICAN CUP
The Michigan GolferTelevision Show will offer daily wrap up shows of the Native American Cup that will be held August 4-6. The coverage will allow tribal supporters from the Seneca Tribe in New York, Team Oklahoma and Team America to see their team in action. The Native America Cup, now in its second year, has a five year commitment from theGrand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians to host the tournamet through the year 2010. Henry J.Boulley Jr. is the Tournament Director.

A rare Saturday off of the roads, allowed me to catch both Fox Network's Michigan Golf Live http://www.michigangolflive.com/, who were visiting Mackinac Island and CBS's Michigan Golf Weekly http://wwjtv.com/michigangolfweekly/with Jeff Lesson and Janina Jacobs who were doing their show from White Pine National. Both shows are well done and have engaging hosts. Michigan Golf Live has a helicopter to spice up some of their coverage, whereas, Jeff Lesson and Janina Jacobs have better on screen patter.

BOOK REVIEW- "PAPER TIGER:AN OBSESSED GOLFER'S QUEST TO PLAY WITH THE PROS"

Tom Coyne pulled off a golfer's dream, by quitting his day job, putting his engagement on hold and then devoting the next 14 months of his life to improving his golf game. His goal was to qualify as a professional, a journey that took him to three qualifiying schools in three different countries, cost him over $50,000, but on the plus side, motivated him to lose 38 pounds. Coyne's premise, not unlike that of Paper Lion's George Plimpton, was to entice the reader and then keep them there with his humorous and suspenseful writing. SNOWBIRD SAFETY ALERT
The Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife is advising golfers to take extra precautions and keep alert for alligators while in : Okaloosa , Alachua, Marion, Lake, Collier, Lee, Seminole, Osceola, Polk, Brevard, Putnam and Orange counties.

They advise people to wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their shoes or clothing to alert but not startle the alligators unexpectedly. They also advise the carrying of pepper spray in case of an encounter with an alligator.

It is also a good idea to watch for fresh signs of alligator activity. People should learn to recognize the difference between small young alligator and large adult alligator droppings.

Young alligator droppings are smaller and contain fish bones and possibly bird feathers. Adult alligator droppings have little bells in them and smell like pepper spray.

MURPHY AIMS FOR A 4TH STRAIGHT OTTAWA COUNTY AM TITLE
Four of a kind is a strong poker hand and its usually unbeatable. Some West Michigan golfers may be making the same comparisons to Kyle Murphy as he tees off this weekend, July 22-23, as the three-time defending champion at the 4th annual Ottawa County Amateur at The Meadow in Allendale. No other player has claimed the trophy since the tournament was launched in 2003. In fact, only Bob Sakocius has won an area amateur event four times in a row and hes done it twicewinning the West Michigan Amateur from 1992-1995 and the Kent County Amateur from 1989-1992. I do feel I have an advantage when playing The Meadows since Ive played the course so many times, said Murphy of Kentwood. And the Ottawa County Amateur seems to come at just the right time of the golf season for me. My game normally peaks at this time of year, said Murphy, a fifth year senior player on Grand Valley State Universitys golf team.

Entry is $80 and is limited to the first 120 golfers with a USGA Handicap Index of 8.0. DAVIS WINS WOMEN'S MICHIGAN AMATEUR

When Lindsay Davis (Whitmore Lake) said after Thursdays quarterfinal match play round that she felt unbeatable, she did not know how accurate her prediction was. Davis, 20, defeated defending champion Mandi McConnell (Grand Blanc) 4&2 to win the GAM Michigan Womens Amateur Friday afternoon at Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor.

A large gallery from Davis home club at Barton Hills followed her throughout the round. Many members who were following live scoring in the semifinal matches on the GAMs web site left work at lunch time to come to the course and support Davis during her match.

I have come in second so many times, said Davis. To win on my home course and have the majority of members out watching and having so much support and to accomplish what I did -- I am feeling that I am on top of the world right now.

Davis was 2 up for the majority of the match, but said having that cushion did not lessen her focus. Today was all about doing whatever it took to win.

I really dont think having the cushion of being 2 up was an advantage, said Davis. I just kept playing like I was 1 down the whole time. My stroke play this week was average. I had a different attitude in the last four matches. I played with very high intensity.

Davis admitted the fact that she plays for the University of Michigan and McConnell plays for rival Michigan State helped fuel her competitive fire. Also, McConnell defeated Davis younger sister Katelin 6&4 in the first found of match play on Wednesday.

The college rivalry came into it big time, admitted Davis. I almost wore all blue and gold today. But I figured the bag; the towel and head covers were enough. That is a mental edge for sure. Then the fact that she beat my sister in the first round was a mental edge. My sister is going to be a senior in high school and she has no experience, but just because (Mandi) beat my sister I had a little bit of a chip on my shoulder.

Davis topped Christina Cibrario 5&4 in the semifinal. McConnell defeated former high school rival and friend Katie Strawser 3&2 to advance to the final round.

McConnell said that pain was a factor in her rounds again today. She did not feel that she played her best the last two days of the event. I dont want to make excuses, but I was in a lot of pain. It was the worst it has been, said McConnell. I was not playing good today or yesterday. It was not good golf. So to make it this far without playing what I feel is good golf, I do have a sense of accomplishment about that.
