Lake Forest GC Tim won the 5,000 meter Olympic Trials in Sacramento last week. Tim hangs out at the golf course, while his girl friend, Vanessa Bell plays on the Futures, South African and European golf tours.
Bath-Eagle Eye at Hawk Hollow -Grand Opening When completed, the clubhouse, golf course and real estate development will total north of $400 million. The course is definitely one worth traveling to. It is mindful of The Gailes, when it debuted, in that it was so strikingly original. The Michigan Golfer Television show will air an interview about the course that Jack Berry did with Chris Lutzke, Pete Dye and Paul Albanese as part of our September/October Issue. "All About Golf" was responsible for the media turnout.

Grand Rapids Jackson-A morning conversation with Jackson's Dave Hill Dave Hill was the man in the 60's and mid 70's. He cut a dashing figure on the golf course and put away man an opponent with his sensational and deft iron play. He played in three Ryder Cups and won over a million dollars on tour. In 1978 his game went south, east, west and north. A proud man, he gave up the sport, but did figure out his malady later on. When we interviewed him, he had just had a round that was one over his age of 67. He shot a 68, hitting 16 greens in regulation. Michigan Golfer Television and our reporter Jack Berry, will bring you a special Ryder Cup show with Dave early next month. Do not miss this show. Dave Hill was and is still one of a kind. David Ogron will attempt to beat the Guiness World Record of most
balls hit in an hour, 2,146. Orgron, who holds the record for 12 and
24 hours, indicates that he is going to try to hit 2,150.
Conroy, is developing a pledge program pegged at 2 cents or more per
ball, that will benefit Michigan Family Medical Relief Fund and more
specifically - the Bob Hanner Family. Bob Hanner suffered a spinal
cord injury in his own yard and is a quadrapalegic. There are
considerable medical costs that are not covered on a monthly basis
and the money will certainly come in handy for paying them. Conroy says
GolfSmith will be involved as well as other sponsors they are after.

This is a great event. I had more fun on the golf course this week
than I have in a long time, and that led to good play. I'm very proud
of myself, said Jorgensen.
Jorgensen, a 24-year-old mini-tour player and Michigan State
University graduate, finished the three-round tournament
at 11-under-par, having shot 68-67-70 -- 205 (-11) to claim the
$17,200 first-prize ?the biggest payday of his young career. He also won a
membership to the Country Club of Boyne.
The best thing about winning this tournament is that it was against a
field of all champions. Everyone in this tournament is an accomplished
player. I loved the competition.?The Tournament of Champions is an
event that pits champions of Michigan golf tournaments against each
other: amateurs, professionals, males, females, seniors and juniors.

She hesitated a moment, then said, "Yes, Sidney, three times."
"Three times? How could that happen?" Sidney asks.
Marsha replied, "Well, do you remember right after we were married
and we were so broke that the bank was about to foreclose on our little
house?"
"Yes, dear, those were really difficult times," replied Sidney.
And remember when I went to see the banker one night, and the next
day the bank extended our loan?"
Gosh, that's really hard to take," said Sidney. "But since things
were so bad at the time, I guess I can forgive you. What was the second
time?"
"Well," Marsha continued, "do you remember years later when you
almost died of that heart problem because we couldn't afford an operation?"
"Yes, of course," said Sidney.
"Then you will remember that right after I went to see the doctor,
he performed the operation at no cost?" "Yes, I remember," said Sidney,
"and as much as that shocks me, I do understand that you did what
you did out of love for me, so I forgive you.
So, what was the third time?"
Marsha lowered her head and said, "Do you remember when you ran for
president of your golf club and you needed 62 more votes?"
Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Jack Minzey for this classic.

The PGA Championship: The Season? Final Major?by John Companiotte and
Catherine Lewis ISBN 1-932202-08-0 Clock Tower Press http://clocktowerpress.com $40 U.S. $55 Can
This is a great coffee table book from Clock Tower Press. The path it
takes from the first tee of Jim Barnes when he won in 1916 at the
Siwanoy CC in New York to the last tap in on the green of Oak Hill CC
at Rochester N.Y. by Shaun Micheel is birdie all the way.
During the read you will relive all of these past tournaments with
the great words and pictures that depict the times and places.
For Michigan readers, the book relives its gloried past with comments
on the great tournaments held on our own courses of Plum Hollow in
1947, Birmingham CC in 1953, Meadowbrook CC in 1955, Oakland Hills CC
in 1972 and 1979. Again, it features some of our great strikers of
the ball; Walter Hagen, Walter Burkemo and Chick Harbert.

OK, a book that uses Iron Byron as its model for the golf swing, sure
we can buy that. Canadian pro, Paul Wilson thought the Iron Bryon
idea a great one and has produced, in collaboration with Ken Steven,
a very sensible book on golf instruction.
Paul Wilson gives his reader three key swing elements to incorporate
into their swing; circular body rotation, an unrestricted hinge and
constant forward tilt.
Wilson does a great job in laying out his model of using Iron Byron
as his reference point. He then takes the reader through his 10 lessons;
The Neutral Grip, The Setup-Part 1, The Follow-Through-Part I-Legs
Together, The Follow-Through-Part II-Ears and Shaft Parallel, The
Follow-Through-Part III-Eyes Tilted, The Setup Part II, The
Backswing-Part I-The One Piece Takeaway, The Backswing-Part II-The
Body Coil, The Backswing-Part III-The Wrist Hinge and The
Backswing-Part IV-The Head Move. Finally, through a very clean layout
with excellent graphics, he lays out the five sections in each
lesson; Why It? Important, What To Do, Making Sure It? Right, How To Work On
It and Beware of Human Nature. This is a terrific book and is easy to
understand.

Connect the divots
In today's world, where land is so valuable, golf courses can have a difficult time justifying the high cost of maintaining a lush practice range. They either do not have the land available, or they cannot grow back good grass after golfers get through tearing it up during practice sessions. Therefore, many courses only offer an artificial grass mat from which to hit. For those of us who are lucky enough to have genuine grass to practice on, here is a tip to preserve the hard work, sweat, and tears your superintendent uses when growing and grooming the grass for a beautiful hitting area.
One of the most important things you can do is to connect the
divots. In other words, after hitting a shot and causing a divot, use
the grass immediately adjacent to the previous divot to hit your next
shot. You don't need a fresh two-foot patch of turf to hit each shot.
You only require a couple of inches of grass. Show some practice
range courtesy. Avoid taking huge divots randomly around your
hitting area. This will ruin the space for the next golfer. We all want the
best grass to hit from, so if the person before you shows courtesy,
you'll have great grass, too. This makes it easier for the
maintenance staff to grow back great grass and keep the ground level.
Have you ever seen a hitting area after a professional or a
considerate player has finished practicing? You will see a
rectangular shape of dirt. This player will use every blade of grass
in a small area. A considerate golfer could hit dozens of shots in a
space as small as a square foot.
Grass is a difficult thing to keep lush when people are stripping it
of blade and root all on a daily basis. Help the superintendent and
his staff by conserving the practice area, and Connect your divots.

An exciting part of this project is the 55,000-square-foot indoor
water park. Its western mine-shaft theme will feature a lazy river,
two slide towers reaching 54 feet with six thrill slides, wave pool,
hot tubs, two children's pools, a sports-oriented pool with
basketball, volleyball and balance challenges, a 45-foot rock
waterfall with climbs to elevated pools and adult and children's
arcades. It will have a 1,000-person capacity and provide fun for the
entire family.
A 57-unit condo-hotel, log homes, quarter-share condominiums,
timeshare units, equestrian home sites and the new RV Park will be in
addition to the resort's existing 200 rooms. The new conference
facilities will be state of the art and the dinner theater will
provide a new evening activity.

"To be honest with you, and this is no lie, I felt very calm the
whole day. It reminded me a lot of how I felt in the final round of the
Honda Classic, which I won back in March. Sometimes I get in
situations where you should be biting all your fingernails off. I'm
usually kind of a nervous guy, especially if I haven't been playing
very well, which I hadn't coming to this tournament. But sometimes I
get out there and it almost seems fun. And I think today seemed like
it was fun for me. I'd never been in a position like that, at least
in a tournament as grand as this, and to be out there for the first time
in a position like that and feel very calm was kind of an oddity. But
as I said, I felt very calm the whole day, believe it or not."

MG golf and MS ski writer, Jim Neff, will have some memories of his
life featured in the upcoming "When KISS Ruled The World" scheduled
for VH1 this Saturday, July 24 at both 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM. The show
will include 2-3 minutes about the time the band visited Cadillac and
visited the famed Kiss Defense that was used by Cadillac's football
team. Can you imagine a band like KISS coming in to town on a whim
and in costume to play in your high school gym? I mean you can not
make up stuff like this.
