MGN ON THE ROAD
CANADA
Sarnia, Ontario-Bonnie Doon GC, Huron Oaks CC and Sawmill Creek GC
Bonnie Doon GC
Dave and Sarah Anderson have put together a pretty impressive golf
property in the past 10 years. They build Bonnie Doon as a nine and
then 18 hole course. Recently, they tripled their clubhouse area and
also developed a par 3 course and driving range. The course is
sloped at 133 and Dave Anderson could not be prouder of the rating.
http://bonniedoongolf.com
Huron Oaks CC
The Mike Weir/Dino Ciccarelli Charity Golf Classic featured more than
50 celebrity golfers, and the Mike Weir All-Star Challenge, featured
Mike Weir, Wayne Gretzky, Adam Oates and Dino Ciccarelli. They have
raised over a half million dollars for charities during the nine year
duration of the event. Sue Storr and Tom Gibson of Sarnia's CHOK we
on hand for interviews of players and celebrities.
Dennis Walters and his dog Benji were a hoot or perhaps I should say
a bark at the event. You can check out a show we did on him a couple of
years ago at the PGA Merchandise Show.

Phil Winch of the Sarnia-Lambton CVB was in charge of the media for
the event. Phil is not only Mr. Golf in the area, but also Mr. Tall
Ships. Here is a show we did with Phil at last year's Tall Ships
visit...

Sawmill Creek GC
Bill Gerritis sold Sawmill Creek CC to a group of Toronto investors.
Bill had the vision to build a pretty amazing facility at Sawmill
Creek CC, but was running out of time and money. The new ownership
has both. They have redone the Bed and Breakfast part of the complex,
added a spa, changed a number of holes to accommodate new condo sites
and revamped the food and beverage areas. They have romantic weekend
packages that are doing very well.
Matt Alexander is the GM and Paul Mikelbrencis the Head Professional
at the club.

London, Ontario-Fire Rock GC
Walt Spivak, a successful Canadian businessman, held court at the
grand opening on London's brand spanking new golf course, Fire Rock.
Media from all over the area were on hand to hear the story first
hand from Spivak and architect, Thomas McBroom. It is an exciting golf
course, that has reclaimed the land that once was a source of
aggregate for the province.
Thomas McBroom is the most prolific golf architect in Canada and has
received a ton of awards for some of the following courses.
Bell Bay Golf Club, Baddeck, Nova Scotia The Links at Crowbush Cove, Morell, P.E.I. Le Géant, Mont Tremblant, Québec Deerhurst Highlands, Muskoka
The Lake Joseph Club, Port Sandfield, Ontario The Links at Crowbush Cove, Morell, P.E.I. Camelot Golf Club, Cumberland, Ontario National Pines Golf Course, Barrie, Ontario Oak Ridge Golf Club at Oak Hills Estates

Ann Arbor
Vanessa Bell, MG reporter, missed the cut in the last qualifier for
the Women's British Open. However, all was not lost as her fiance,
Tim Broe won the 5000 meter U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento.
Cadillac
Jim Neff, Michigan Golfer and Michigan Skier writer, was recently
featured on the VH1 show, "When Kiss Ruled the World". Jim chatted
about the time the band came to Cadillac and all the craziness of
that day.

Grand Blanc
This is the second day of the big one, as Brand Blanc turns into
Tiger Town for the duration of the Buick Open. Tiger and many of the tours
great players are on hand in Michigan's premier golf event. Many will
be trying to land those last Ryder Cup points to make the team.

ROUNDS ARE UP ACCORDING TO NGF
Rounds played in the U.S. were up 2.5% for the first six months of
the year as compared to the same period last year, according to NGF's
latest Quarterly Rounds Played Report. Rounds increased 0.9% in the
second quarter and 6.9% in the first quarter (revised upward from the
5.3% shown in the April 15, 2004, report due to 400 additional
facilities reporting).
April was a strong month nationwide as rounds increased 4.9%. May
(-0.1%) and June (-0.8%) were down marginally. The near one percent
gain for the quarter compares to an almost three percent loss in
second quarter 2003 vs. 2002.
The region posting the strongest gain for the quarter was the Mid
Atlantic (10.5%), which was hard hit by inclement weather during the
same period last year. Regions with the largest declines in the
quarter were the Upper Midwest (-5.5%) and the Gulf Coast (-4.5%),
both of which suffered from above average precipitation during the
quarter.
This marks the third consecutive quarter that rounds played have
increased over the previous year. NGF estimates that about one-third
of rounds in the U.S. occur in each of the second and third quarters.
So, the next quarter will have a significant impact on whether the
six-month gains can be held for the year.
For the full second quarter rounds played report, visit

STACY SNIDER WINS MICHIGAN PGA WOMEN'S OPEN IN PLAYOFF
Stacy Snider shot 71 in the final round to win the $40,000 Michigan
PGA Women's Open Wednesday on Crystal Mountain Resort's Mountain
Ridge course. Snider, a 24-year-old Michigan State University grad who
turned professional last year, posted rounds of 72-70-73 215. After
bogeying the 16th and 17th holes, she holed a ten-foot birdie putt on
the 482-yard, par-five 18th hole to play her way into a playoff at
six-under-par - a playoff she won by making an eight-foot birdie putt
on the very same hole moments later.
Elaine Crosby, a former LPGA player from Jackson, began the day a
stroke behind Malinaric, but the two-time Michigan Women's Open
champion, who serves as Crystal Mountain's Golf Ambassador, closed
with a 73 that left her a shot out of the playoff at 5-under-par.
MSU golf coach Stacy Slobodnik finished as low-amateur at 1-over-par.

LPGA TIP OF THE WEEK
This week's tip courtesy of Kathleen Gook, Paradise Valley Country
Club, Paradise Valley, AZ
What's a foolproof way of getting out of a greenside bunker?
Get into a practice bunker, and instead of having a ball in front of
you, draw a 6-inch oval that is pointing towards your target. Set up
to this oval, so that the back of the oval is in the middle of your
stance, and the front of the oval closer to the target. Have 60
percent of your weight on your target-side foot. Your goal is to
'splash' the sand that is in the oval, all the way to your target.
Finish with your weight on the target side foot, and continue
practicing splashing the oval out. When you feel ready, draw another
oval, and then place a golf ball within the oval, approximately 2
inches from the back. Again, your goal is to splash the sand within
that oval to the target. Your golf ball will ride out on that magic
carpet of sand!

SUMMER READING LIST
"AIM of Golf: Visual-Imagery Lessons to Improve Every Aspect of Your
Game"
by Mitchell Spearman with Harry Hurt III ISBN 1-57954-805-9
Rodale Press http://rodalestore.com
$25 U.S. /$37 Canadian
Mitchell Spearman, starts off his book by quoting Jack Nicklaus who
says each of his shots is like "going to the movies." In essence,
Jack creates a self-produced movie of the shot he is about to make and
then, takes his stance and hits it.
Spearman then practices what he preaches by giving the readers a
comprehensive supply of photographs to make his points. He uses many
props in his teaching style, and most contribute quite a bit to
effectively making his points. "Stick a Popsicle Stick through Your
Watchband", "Slalom on Snow Skis", "Drop a Marble on Your Ball" are
all phrases and photos that should help your game.
---
"When Golf is a Ball: A Lifetime of Fun and Adventure in the Game"
by Dr. Gary Wiren
Gary Wiren has led a wonderful life in his life in golf. He has
traveled to 36 countries in teaching about golf. His mantra concerns
six elements that influence one's play; Biomechanical Technique,
Psychological Strength, Physical Fitness, Quality and Quantity of
Practice, Game Knowledge and Correct Equipment.
However, you really want to buy this book because of the stories that
appear in it. Wiren has brought to the table some terrific stories
that make this a real page turner. I got the Prepress copy from
Clock Tower Press, started thumbing through it and wound up an hour later,
finally putting it down. Great stuff.
It is a great read that acquaints you with wonderful stories of
games, instructions, players and rounds with the rich and famous.
While the book is not out yet, you can keep track of the launch date
at http://clocktowerpress.com
Finally, for those that want to get a signed copy of "How to Quit
Golf", the golf book that was such a hit two years ago, Craig Brass
indicated that he will be signing copies at the Saturn Bookstore in
Gaylord on Saturday, July 31 around 11:30, as part of their Michigan
authors day.
