In an attempt to build community awareness about the program, Ray Davies and I are working on a major media push. We are hoping to get some media attention with 4 major topics: 1. The fact that a non-profit, The First Tee of Detroit, is successfully operating the Belle Isle Practice Center for the City of Detroit. (hopefully this will help drive traffic to the center) 2. The ways that The First Tee of Detroit programs are impacting the lives of young people. 3. The fact that The First Tee has been operating out of Rackham G.C. for over 10 years and with the pending sale of Rackham, our future is in jeopardy. 4. Our financial crisis. Point O'Woods, first hosted the tournament in 1963 when Tom Weiskopt won and then again in 1965 when Bob Smith won. In 1971, the club took over hosting the tournament on a full time basis. The Western Am has been hosted by many golf courses around the U.S. and many in Michigan. Those clubs in Michigan who have hosted the tournament include: 1911 Detroit GC 1914 Kent CC 1925 Lochmoor Club 1953 Blythefield CC 1962 Orchard Lake CC 1968 Grosse Isle G & CC Fenton Coyote Preserve Bill Shelton, host of the Michigan Golfer TV show for the first three years and now living in North Carolina, was in town for a wedding and some golf. He brought his son, Brad who had professional golf credentials, but has regained his amateur status since taking a full time position with the University of Kentucky. They were hot off winning one of the flights in the Myrtle Beach Father and Son Tournament. Shelton, as you may recall, was President of Eastern Michigan University for eleven years and then was the Interim President for East Carolina University for a year and a half. Matt Miller, the Head Golf Professional and Sam VanDusen, the owner were on hand to chat about the Coyote Preserve, an Arnold Palmer Signature Course. Martin and his staff. http://coyotepreserve.com Tyrone Hills GC The last time we saw Denis Husse, he was following his son around the Michigan Open. Denis is an institution at Tyrone Hills and also an individual that gives his time for the betterment of the golf industry. Tyrone Hills always seems to be busy, most likely because of the great service the golfers receive. Saugatuck-Douglas Ah yes, wonderful Saugatuck, one of Michigan's great destinations and some great golf as well. There was, however, controversy in Saugatuck. The West Shore GC is in the process of being reduced by nine holes to accommodate some new condos on the site. Everything seemed to be going along smoothly, but there now seems to be a hitch in the the project. Stayed tuned. ----- Ypsilanti Eagle Crest Resort Work continues on the Marriott at the Eagle Crest Resort as they continue to remodel and revitalize the resort. Upgrades in computer labs in EMU's Corporate Education Center are also underway. open.htm ) After his first round, Hebert is +9 and is tied for 132nd position. http://www.pga.com/pgachampionship/2007/scoring/index1.html =========================================== PELZ SHORT GAME SCHOOL AT THE HOMESTEAD By Terry Moore ========================================== “Joe Hoffman” came to mind the other day. Joe was a golfer in Youngstown, Ohio, (where I grew up) whom my Dad knew. Quite the character and somewhat of a friendly rogue, Joe was infamous for cutting down his putter whenever he missed a crucial, money-costing, putt. At the end of one disappointing golf season, Joe’s blade was so short it was fit only for Tom Thumb or a jockey. But oddly enough, Joe kept putting about the same if not better than when his putter was at standard length. Anyway, Joe Hoffman’s snub-nose putter popped into my head after I attended, along with my wife and another couple, a mini-Pelz short game clinic at the Homestead Resort in Glen Arbor. After being around the game for over 45 years, I wondered what, if any, tips I might pick up. And in fact, I’ve known Dave Pelz for years even before his Mickelson association. I’ve read his books and articles, and even had Pelz as a headliner years ago at the West Michigan Golf Show. What more could I possibly learn at a Pelz clinic? Plenty, as I pleasantly found out. Our able instructor was Stefan Carlsmith, a personable and knowledgeable teaching professional from California who’s in charge of the Pelz summer schools at the Homestead. Carlsmith provided an excellent sampling of what the Pelz School will impart over either a three-day or one-day school. Carlsmith worked on our chipping, greenside pitching, and putting and our group greatly benefited from his expertise. I consider myself a sound chipper but Carlsmith showed me some tips on ball position (off right toe--for a right-hander) and club position (upright and outside the left hip) that proved worthwhile. These tips especially worked their magic for my wife who’s struggled at times on her chipping. On short pitches, Carlsmith emphasized softer hands by slightly releasing the body (torso) through the shot, taking the “hit” out of the shot. I must confess I had never understood that oft-read advice ‘til Carlsmith demonstrated it. Again, presto! Okay, but what does this have to do with Joe Hoffman and his short putter? Well, the last segment of our group’s mini-clinic was devoted to putting. The Pelz putting philosophy emphasizes the traditional tenets of eyes over the ball, a straight back and thru stroke, arms hanging down loosely from the shoulders, and more use of the shoulders in the putting motion. All items made sense. But as Carlsmith convinced us, this checklist is very hard to replicate with an ill-fitting putter. And ill-fitting usually means a “too long” putter for most players. For three of us, he recommended putters in the 30”-32” length range. A shorter putter allows the arms to hang down nicely and allows the eyes to be centered over the ball. It’s much easier to have a more dependable “rocking shoulder” motion in one’s stroke. We all tried shorter putters and the results were impressive. Tell them Joe Hoffman sent you! ===================================== SUNRISE SIDE:Sun is up on the sunny side By Jack Berry ===================================== With a gloom and doom atmosphere prevailing in Michigan over the economy, the state budget, gasoline prices and the end of the Harry Potter series it was refreshing to drive up the Sunrise Side last weekend and along US-23 from Standish to Oscoda to see, one after another, NO VACANCY signs on the motels. The relatively new beach at Tawas Point, wide and sandy, had hundreds of sun bathers, kids in the water and kite surfers. Tourists took pictures of the century-old lighthouse, one of a string surrounding our Great Lakes shore line that is being preserved as a part of our heritage on the greatest body of fresh water in the world. In town there was a street sale with a lot of traffic and a small group playing Jimmy Buffet’s “Wastin’ Away in Margaritaville.” The state park in town was packed with RVs and campers and Mooney’s ice cream shop was doing non-stop business with more flavors than Howard Johnson knew existed. Another welcome sign of the upswing was the sighting of a bald eagle, high in a white pine along Lake Huron. Up in Oscoda the signs still were out for the previous weekend’s windup of the Au Sable canoe race and at Lakewood Shores, Golf Director Craig Peters said “Whoever thought we’d be happy to see gasoline at $2.94?” In the spring there was great concern at courses and resorts around the state over gasoline prices but judging by traffic I’ve seen this summer on I-96, US-127, US-131, US-23 and I-75, folks are making do. “We were very apprehensive going into the season, Peters said, “but we’ve had a lot of special promotions and packages and we’ve had a good year.” Obviously enjoying it was Ces Bisset’s troop of women from metropolitan Detroit on their annual northern golf weekend – men aren’t the only ones with golf weekends. “They’re a little raucous but they’re a lot of fun,” starter Stu Churchill said, laughing, as the women, in identical golf shirts headed out on the Gailes course Saturday morning. While the statewide building boom at resorts has dwindled, Lakewood Shores is adding capacity and will have 280 beds available at the resort. And on the way home Sunday, we shunned the freeway in favor of the two laners through corn and soybean country, through “Cheesetown,’ Pinconning, through Bay City with wonderful big homes dating back to the days of big lumber barons in the early 1900s, through Vassar where crowds gathered on the bridge over the Cass River to watch canoe and kayak races. The state designates M-15 from Bay City south to Clarkston as a Recreational Highway and it’s a pleasant alternative to the usual bumper-to-bumper on I-75. ============================================= GOLF CHANNEL REPLAYS 1962 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP ============================================= The Golf Channel pulled one out of the vault that featured Grand Rapids, John Barnum and Chick Harbert. Barnum was also the first professional to use a Ping Putter. They were both in the hunt during the 1962 PGA Championship that was won by Gary Player. Player pocketed $13,000 for his efforts. After twice being a finalist, Chick broke through to win the National PGA Championship in 1954 and was named to two U.S. Ryder Cup Teams. He won five Michigan Open titles (the first as an amateur) and won six Michigan PGA Championships. He was named to the PGA Hall of Fame in 1968. Since the USGA last held championships at San Francisco's Olympic Club (2004 U.S. Junior Amateur, 1998 U.S. Open), a significant amount of brush and trees have been removed, opening up the famed golf course and allowing golfers an improved view of the varied topography. Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) Certified Golf Course Superintendent Pat Finlen, director of golf course maintenance operations, has added tee extensions to four holes on the Lake Course and native grasses to the Ocean Course, toughening up The Olympic Club The Olympic Club is the nation's oldest athletic club (est. 1860). Located in southwest San Francisco, its 45 holes of championship golf on 365 acres of rolling hills between Lake Merced and the Pacific Ocean have hosted multiple USGA championships, including four U.S. Opens and two other U.S. Amateurs, plus numerous PGA Tour events. The Olympic Club will host the U.S. Open again in 2012. The Lake Course will play at par 70, 6,929 yards for this U.S. Amateur and the Ocean Course will play at par 70, 6,786 yards. The Olympic Club is a sand-based course with push-up greens constructed with native sand. It features excellent drainage, a bentgrass/ryegrass/Poa annua mixture on the tees and fairways, a bluegrass/ryegrass mixture in the rough and Poa annua greens that measure 11.6 on the stimpmeter. Hack, of Sanford, Fla., follows in the footsteps of 2007 NCAA champion Jamie Lovemark to become only the second player to win the Western Junior and Western Amateur in back-to-back years since the Western Golf Association started the national junior championship in 1914. Lovemark, who withdrew from this year’s Western Amateur after one round due to injury, won the Western Junior in 2004 and Western Amateur in 2005. “This whole week’s been a blur,” said Hack, who had to wait until Monday to win the rain-delayed championship final. “I didn’t have the best expectations coming in this week. For me to win is awesome. It’s the best feeling I’ve had so far in golf.” Hack’s wedge play and putting skill counter his lack of distance. In Monday’s final, Hack closed out the match with three quality approach shots and one timely putt. On the par 4, 420-yard 16th, Hack dropped a wedge shot eight feet from the hole and drained the putt for birdie and the ultimate 1 up advantage. On the par 3, 208-yard 17th he hit a 5-iron to within eight feet but narrowly missed the putt that would have closed out the match. On the par 4, 421-yard 18th, he hit a pitching wedge to six feet that sealed the match, as Prugh missed a 12-foot birdie putt that could have forced extra holes. “My putt at 16 was huge,” said Hack. “It was just a great match … an awesome match. We both played good, and it went back and forth. This was the best match I had all week. The PGA of America and Oakland Hills will host the 90th PGA Championship, the Season's Final Major, on the famed South Course August 4-10, 2008. "We are overwhelmed by the response of golf enthusiasts in the state of Michigan," said Ryan Cannon, Tournament Director for the 2008 PGAChampionship.
