MGN ON THE ROAD
==================
Ireland
We are still recovering from both jet and Euro lag since we touched down from our Ireland
trip last week.  it was memorable to be sure. We golfed Waterville, The Dooks at Dingle
Bay and toured Lahinch, the Old Tom Morris and  Alister MacKenzie designed course, and
Adare Golf Course as well. We also visited the Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty Castle, King
John's Castle, Skellig Rock, Valentia Island, Muckross House and Adare Manor.

We also caught a Liam O'Connor and Lisa Aherne concert in Kilarney.  They played a Henry
Ford gala during the Oakland Hills Ryder Cup in 2004.  They were fantastic then and are
still headlining throughout the world.  We used some of their music as background on our
two new Ireland shows on Michigan Golfer Television. Enjoy.

Cathal O'Sullivan, a newbie in the  golf travel business, did a fine job in setting the
trip up.  He is concentrating on the Michigan market and has been a vendor at the past two
Michigan Golf Shows.

Again, great time, great golf and great rain.

Two Ireland Shows on You Tube

Adare Golf Club with Cathal O'Sulivan
Ireland's Adare Manor was the site for Robert Trent Jones final major golf course design.
It is now the home of the Irish Open and was recently extended to its 7453 yards.  The
Maigue River and a  14 acre lake provide the usual water hazards that Robert Trent Jones
so loved to create.

Lahinch Golf Club with Jennie McCafferty and Bob McCavery
Lahinch Golf Links almost has it all.  They have the history, built in 1892, designer
blood lines in Old Tom Morris and Alister MacKenzie, a storied hole in No. 5 and a
location on the Atlantic Ocean. What they don't have, according to professional Bob
McCavery, is the infrastructure to support a major tournament.  It is not near a major
city, they have narrow roads and there are  few hotels. Our video gives you a nice look at
the town, course and a recounting of the history by Bob McCavery, who has been the pro
since 1959 after he took over from his dad, who was there for a couple of decades himself.

Ryder Cup Memories- Cathal O'Sullivan interviews Doug Bell and Mike Biber of Osprey
Management
Our travel planner for our Ireland trip was Cathal O'Sullivan. In our show, O'Sullivan
chats with Mike Biber and Doug Bell of Osprey Management about their experience at the
Ryder Cup and their impressions of Ireland.  They were two of almost a hundred people from
the Osprey Management Group that attended the event.  Our show host, Cathal O'Sullivan of
Sullivan Golf & Travel, discusses the Ryder Cup and some of the memories of the event that
the Osprey people brought back.

*Viewing reminder- We have just gone to a more robust video presentation on You Tube and
the need to downsize the screen is less important.  However,  you will still need to
downsize the You Tube screen on some of our earlier renderings  for better viewing.

NATIVE AMERICAN CUP CANCELLED
===============================
Since this event was originally scheduled for August 3, it seems rather obvious that the
event was cancelled.  However, Henry Boulley Jr. was trying to change the date to give him
time to line up additional sponsors to make it happen, etiher at the Grand Traverse Resort
& Spa, or perhaps at Wild Bluff in Bay Mills. A few people stepped up, but it was too
little too late.  There is hope that they can bring the tournament back next year.

TOM DOAK ARTICLE ON PORTFOLIO
===============================
Dave Richards, CEO of Golf and Resort Marketing,  passed on an article that appeared in
Portfolio on Tom Doak.  It is a nice read and we supply a quote to entice you into read
the entire story.

On Doak:
“He remembers every hole he’s ever played, good or bad,” says the Chicago greeting-card
magnate Mike Keiser, who enlisted Doak to design his Pacific Dunes course in Bandon,
Oregon. Opened in 2001, it was named the country’s best resort golf course by Golfweek
magazine in 2006—placing just ahead of Pebble Beach. “It is clear from Tom’s work that he
has got it; he’s the architectural giant of his time.”

Mike Biber, of Osprey Management, has recently been talking to Doak about tweaking his Black Forest course. =========== SCORECARD =========== Bill Fountain, passed on a scorecard from the grandkids of one of their investors.  The card included scores of 3 cranes, 8 geese, 3 frogs, a deer (doe), a carp and a racoon track.  This might be the new course record at The Majestic at Lake Walden. http://majesticgolf.com ========================================== GOLF CHANNEL'S TOP 10 CHARACTERS IN GOLF ========================================== The Golf Channel had a fun feature about some of the characters in golf.  In case you missed it, here are the Top 10. 1. Contact: Tim Hygh timhygh@comcast.net ========================================================== BEN WRIGHT RETURNS TO CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN FOR INVITATIONAL ========================================================== Legendary CBS golf commentator Ben Wright returns to Crystal Mountain August 20-25 as host of the Crystal Mountain Invitational, an event that will be renamed in his honor. The special two-day, 42-hole tournament is now the Ben Wright Crystal Mountain Invitational.  Ben Wright is an Emmy– and Peabody-award winning broadcaster who has been observing and analyzing the game of golf for over fifty years. He spent 23 years as “the voice of golf,” for CBS Sports covering the game’s greatest events including the Ryder Cup and the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club. The Ben Wright Crystal Mountain Invitational is a two-day event in which golfers compete as two-person and five-person teams on the Betsie Valley course on Friday, August 24 with a dinner banquet to follow. Play moves to the Mountain Ridge course on Saturday, August 25. Following the second round, the top two-person teams will hit alternating shots on the Betsie Valley in a sudden death playoff.   For More Information: Brian Lawson (800) 968-7696, ext. 2506 ============================== PATRIOT GOLF DAY-SEPTEMBER 1 ============================== Patriot Golf Day is a joint initiative of The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association.   More than 2,000 facilities nationwide are signed up to participate in the event.  A complete list of participating facilities can be found by state at http://www.playgolfamer
ica.com/index.cfm?action=patriot
Golfers have an opportunity to donate $1 to Wounded Warriors, Inc., which will benefit the Fallen Heroes Foundation to support families of those who have become disabled or lost their lives in the line of military duty.   Public facilities will request an additional $1 for each green fee processed Sept. 1, while private facilities will ask patrons to contribute donations. Patriot Golf Day is spearheaded by PGA Professional Dan Rooney of Stillwater, Okla.  Rooney, an F-16 pilot in the 125th Fighter Squadron of the Oklahoma Air National Guard, has logged two tours of duty to Iraq, and following his most recent tour he began to think of ways he could stay involved in the war effort. Rooney is also in the process of establishing The Fallen Heroes Foundation, which will pay for the education of a spouse and/or children who have lost a parent in Iraq or Afghanistan. Most of his designs were created in partnership with golf legend and ASGCA Fellow Arnold Palmer, with whom Seay began working in 1972 and formed Palmer Course Design Company in 1979. Designing a golf course in Communist China in 1981, Seay was among the first American golf course architects to work outside the United States.   Among Seay’s representative golf courses are Sawgrass C.C., Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; The Tradition G.C., LaQuinta, Calif.; The K Club, Straffan, Ireland; Four Seasons Resort at Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica; Kapalua Village Course, Maui, Hawaii; Aviara, Carlsbad, Calif.; Old Tabby Links, Spring Island, S.C.; Tralee C.C., Tralee, Ireland; and Adios G.C. in Coconut Creek, Fla.  In Michigan, the Seay/Palmer duo was responsible for The Legend, Northville Hills, King's Challenge, The Ravines and the Coyote Preserve. ===================== JUNE GOLF ROUNDS UP ===================== After rising 5.4% in May, June rounds played rose 3.4%. Because May-June has a high volume of rounds, the year-to-date deficit dropped dramatically, according to the National Golf Foundation. Year-to-date rounds, which had fallen 9.0% through April, were down only 1.8% through June. The reporting is based on data from operators at more than 1,800 golf facilities. For the full year 2006, rounds played were up 0.8%. Of the 11 regions surveyed, seven showed year-to-date declines. The Southwest region was the strongest, up 3.4%. The Southeast, Southwest and Northwest regions showed increases of between one and two percent. The sharpest decline was in the South Central region, down 10.9% year-to-date. The Mid-Atlantic region trailed, down 5.3%. Stats Provided by NGF and Golf Datatech  ========================================= GOLF CONSUMER ACTIONS AND MOTIVATIONS ========================================= Who plays golf and why? According to the results of a recent NPD survey Golf: Consumer Actions and Motivations, 18% of U.S. men and 3% of U.S. women have played golf in the past year, but motivations for playing differ significantly by gender. On average, men started playing golf at a younger age than women, with more than 90% saying they play for their own personal enjoyment.  Although the majority of women also play for personal enjoyment, women are significantly more likely to say they started playing golf to please someone else or to spend more time with family members. Although golf has often been seen as a way of getting ahead in business, only 5% of men and 3% of women said that business/professional ambitions motivate their play. Despite ranking _in-store demo_ as the leading influence on their decision to purchase a golf club, a significant number of golfers are buying their clubs from Internet retailers. Among those who bought clubs during the past year, more than 20% went online to make their purchase, making the Internet more popular for purchasing than any individual retailer in the U.S. (Note: data in the NSGA Sporting Goods Market report confirms this Internet observation. Although only one in 10 golfers said they took a golf-specific vacation during the past year, 45% of female golfers and 38% of male golfers said they played golf while on a vacation.  Golf: Consumer Actions and Motivations is based on information collected from NPD ========================================================================= LARRY KELLY'S  STILL IN THE HUNT ON THE GOLF CHANNEL'S FORE INVENTOR ONLY ========================================================================= Brighton resident Larry Kelly and his Gyro Swing invention was one of five inventors from the last batch of inventors to make the cut. Kelly and four other inventors will join another previously selected group of five inventors to compete for the best product.  The finals will be held on September 9th. Kelly's Gyro Swing is a swing training aid that utilizes a gyroscope motor attached to the end of a club shaft that automatically places the club on plane.  Last Tuesday, Aug. 21, the 10 semifinalists met with expert pitch master and original television host of the Home Shopping Network, Bob Circosta, and celebrity sales trainer Chelsea Scott.  Circosta and Scott  coached the inventors on how to effectively pitch their products to the consumers before visiting a Golfsmith store to present their products to customers.  Jim Thompson, CEO of program sponsor Golfsmith, gave Kelly's invention a big "Wow" when he used it. While not has riveting as "The Big Break", the show is interesting.  Every year, the PGA Merchandise Show features new products for the year.  There are some really great and really strange products released each year.  Now we get a chance to see some of the folks behind the products. A Golf Channel release was used in preparation of the above article. http://golfchannel.com ============================================================ $10 MILLION UPGRADE NOW UNDERWAY AT SHANTY CREEK RESORTS ============================================================ Construction is now underway at Shanty Creek Resorts’ Summit Village, one of three villages located in the Grand Traverse Region in Bellaire, Michigan. A $10 million renovation and redecoration recently commenced on the hotel’s guestrooms, public areas and function space. A new face will be evident in upcoming months at Summit Village, with one of its most dramatic changes taking place at main lobby of the original Lodge. Interior structural changes will result in guests being greeted upon stepping into the lobby entrance of the Hotel with the picturesque views of Lake Bellaire and tall hardwood ceilings. This view is the inspiration for the new name of the 185 room Hotel located in the Summit Village – The Lakeview Hotel & Conference Center.  “I am excited to be a part of this chapter in the new life of Shanty Creek Resorts”, comments the resorts’ Chief Operating Officer, Jack Eslick, “We believe the partnerships formed with Comstock Construction -Traverse City, MI and Archiventure Design Firm - Petoskey, MI and Denver, CO will help Shanty Creek Resorts reclaim its position as THE complete four season destination resort in Northern Michigan and the Upper Midwest. .  ======================================================================= PGA.COM SETS RECORD STREAMING AND TRAFFIC DURING 89TH CHAMPIONSHIP ======================================================================= Turner Sports announced today that PGA.com, the official site of the PGA of America, saw significant increases throughout the site, including record-breaking video streaming and page views during its four days of PGA Championship LIVE coverage.  PGA.com saw more than 2 million total streams, a 116% increase over last year, which already surpasses the top month in site history, and also received record-breaking traffic during the four days of championship coverage with an increase of 233% to more than 165 million page views, the most traffic the site has seen for any Major Championship.  PGA.com offered more than 45 hours of live PGA Championship coverage including four days of exclusive live golf coverage of 2007 PGA Champion Tiger Woods and other notable golfers on Playercam, as well as a live simulcast of TNT coverage for the first two rounds. Overall pre-registration numbers have increased by 44 percent in comparison to last year five weeks before the event and could push industry attendance well past the 4,000 mark on site.  Influential golf retailers such as American Golf, Pinehurst, Pebble Beach, Riviera Country Club, Bali Hai and Brentwood Country Club are sending PGA Golf Professionals and buyers to preview the latest golf merchandise from a combination of golf’s market leaders plus nearly 200 exhibitors who do not exhibit at the annual PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando. 2007 PGA Fall Expo online at http://www.pgaexpo.com  Contact: Jeff Bollig, GCSAA director of communications ========================================== NORMAN TO RECEIVE OLD TOM MORRIS AWARD ========================================== Greg Norman, a World Golf Hall of Fame member, wildly successful entrepreneur and staunch proponent for golf's positive relationship with the environment, has been selected to receive the 2008 Old Tom Morris Award by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). "I have always had the utmost respect for the GCSAA and I believe its members are truly the unsung heroes of our sport," Norman said. "It is a distinct honor to be selected for the Old Tom Morris Award and to join this distinguished list of past recipients." GCSAA’s most prestigious honor, the Old Tom Morris Award is presented each year to an individual who “through a continuing lifetime commitment to the game of golf has helped to mold the welfare of the game in a manner and style exemplified by Old Tom Morris.” Morris (1821-1908) was greenkeeper and golf professional at the St. Andrews Links Trust Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland; a four-time winner of the British Open (1861, ’62, ’64 and ’67); and ranked as one of the top links designers of the 19th century. Watson 2008-Greg Norman Taken froma GCSAA release ================================ RANDOM THOUGHTS AND NOTES ByTerry Moore ================================ In a state often in need of some good news, it was gratifying and important to read about Ford and GM’s stellar customer satisfaction ratings. In a study conducted by the University of Michigan, Buick, Ford, Cadillac, and Lincoln-Mercury all tied for second, behind Lexus, in rankings that asked people whether a product met their expectations and how close it was to their ideal product in the auto category. This study followed a recent J.D. Power report that had Buick tied with Lexus in quality for vehicles three years old. Mercury and Cadillac finished in the top four. In the same UM study but in the separate “large appliance” category, Benton Harbor’s Whirlpool Corp. topped the list in customer satisfaction.  Up in the Sleeping Bear Dunes area (Glen Arbor) a few weeks ago I marveled at the stunningly beautiful surroundings. (Credit the late U.S. Senator Philip Hart and others for having the vision and energy to making the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore designation a reality.) I met a gentleman from Atlanta (GA) at the picturesque Homestead Resort and he said, “This area of Michigan and the Homestead Resort are one of the best kept secrets in the country. People from Atlanta keep asking me why I vacation up here each and every summer. And I won’t tell them because I want to keep it to myself.”  I also paid a visit recently to nearby King’s Challenge GC, the Arnold Palmer-Ed Seay design. Although its conditioning is currently not up to snuff, the layout is still a favorite of mine. Chief Designer Ed Seay, who passed away this past week, said he and Palmer always prided themselves on designing player-friendly layouts, stubbornly resistant to the stupid penal design pendulum of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. The par-five 8th hole at King’s Challenge is one of the best holes in northern Michigan and is mindful of something one would find in the Blue Ridge Mountains in N.C. Here’s hoping more attention and funds may be directed to this fine course’s maintenance budget. Noticed on the CBS coverage of the PGA that Dan Rooney, the acclaimed Oklahoma-based PGA professional and owner of Grand Haven GC, gave CBS broadcaster David Feherty a ride in his Air National Guard F-16 jet. Feherty later returned the favor by having Rooney inside the ropes for Tiger’s pairing on Sunday. Rooney, with two tours of duty as a Guardsman in Iraq, is the catalyst behind the Fallen Heroes Foundation and various golf events which benefit the families of service men and women lost in conflict. Dan and his father John (who once was a keynoter at one of the early Michigan Golf Summits organized by Michigan Golfer) purchased the Grand Haven GC several years ago and have done an admirable job in investing in the facility and restoring the course to its once lofty position in Michigan public golf. Incidentally, Sept. 1 is Patriot’s Day, organized by Rooney and supported by the PGA of America and USGA whereby $1 will be donated to the Fallen Heroes Foundation for every golfer playing that day at participating courses. Finally, condolences to the Zylstra family of Grand Rapids on the news of the passing of Michigan PGA member Bill Zylstra. Zylstra, 91, was an accomplished and most-respected PGA professional, teacher and sales representative. A member of the PGA for 52 years, Zylstra had 12 aces and competed in two U.S Opens. A lifetime member of Green Ridge/Egypt Valley CC, Zylstra was the longtime sales representative for PowerBilt and ably covered a multi-state area. With a wry sense of humor and an ever-friendly demeanor, Zylstra personified the golfing gentleman. ================================================== MICHIGAN GOLF TELEVISION SHOWS NEW ON YOU TUBE* ================================================= *Viewer Note:  For easier viewing, click on the tv icon, bottom right on the page to reduce the screen size.  These are small files and distort when blown up to full size. 2007 Michigan Open-presented by Lincoln Mercury Andy Rutkowski took first at this year's presentation.  Kevin Helm handles the podium and Jennie McCafferty interviews  Scott Hebert and Grand Traverse Resort's Mike DeAgostino. http://youtube.com/watch?v=3m6CBV4inyQ Father and Son Tournament-Myrtle Beach Bill and Brad Shelton have been part of the Father and Son tournament the past five years and brought back some hardware this year, capturing a first in the Liezke Flight.  This is largest Father and Son Tournament in the U.S. and one of the largest tournaments in the U.S. overall.   Join us as Bill and Brad share their memories of the 10th anniversary of the event. http://youtube.com/watch?v=7fohqvMz71Q Kentucky Golf and the Ryder Cup Brad and William Shelton discuss Kentucky golf as a background for the upcoming Ryder Cup.  In addition, Susan Bairley chats with the V.P. of the Louisville CVB, Karen Williams about visitors can expect during Ryder Cup week. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_b8ZF-804Y Western Amateur Memories with Tim Cronin Tim Cronin is the main man when it comes to Western Am history, he wrote the book.
