MGN ON THE ROAD

Augusta-Gull Lake View
We stopped by Gull Lake View and chatted with Director of Golf, Wes
Wendall. They had about 500 golfers go through on a very fine
Sunday, but still have a ways to go to recoup the numbers after a
rainy spring. Wes indicated that it rained for 22 straight days. He
became alarmed when he d noticed animals hanging out in pairs on the
course. His daughter, Jen, was also on hand helping out in the pro
shop.

Benton Harbor-Point O' Woods
Robert Trent Jones would have been proud of the way his course looked
at the Western Amateur. The course had been ravaged by 90 mile an
hour straight line winds in a late spring storm. However, an
aggressive ground crew cleaned up the course. The Western Amateur is
one of the signature amateur tournaments in the world and the Point
O' Woods course easily rises to the challenge.

Battle Creek-Marywood
The venerable Marywood was sparkling in the noon day sun. Like many
courses this year, the heavy spring and summer rains, have produced
spectacular growing conditions.

Paw Paw-Lake- Cora Hills Golf Club
We had the opportunity to chat with Dawn Eisner, Golf Manager of
Coral Hills, as she showed us around this very nice 18 hole course, that is
just on the outskirts of Paw Paw. The first nine was built in the
60's and the second in the 70's. They have a nice rolling course, solid
greens and a very affordable price. Their new website
http://lakecorahills.com is a couple
of weeks away from its debut.

MR'S TIM BROE MAKES THE OLYMPIC TEAM
Tim Broe, now being coached by Ron Warhurst at the University of
Michigan, competed in London's Norwich Union Track meet last week and
made the "A" qualifying standard for the U.S. and therefore his pass
to march in the Olympics in a couple of weeks. Broe raced against
former world record-holder Haile Gebrselassie of Ethopia. Broe, 28
and in his prime, trimmed some 5.5 seconds off his PR (Personal
Record) on Friday.

For those that have watched Vanessa Bell on our Michigan Golfer
Television channel http://michigangolfer.tv Tim Broe is her fiance.
You can watch an interview we had with Tim Broe, prior to the London race @ http://michiganrunner.tv/2003timbroe/

However, before I turn you over to the following story on Tim, I
should like to point out that Vanessa Bell brings our viewers the
craziness of the 9th Annual Jeff Daniels Comedy Golf Jam on Michigan
Golfer Television this week. http://michigangolfer.tv

Below is an article from Bob Ramsak, a leading running scribe and
the editor of Race Results Weekly, a leading industry publication.
http://raceresultsweekly.com

BROE RELIEVED, CONFIDENT AFTER PERSONAL BEST IN LONDON by Bob Ramsak
(c) 2004 Race Results Weekly, All Rights Reserved

LONDON -- Less than six months ago, a scenario finding Tim Broe on
the starting line at the Olympic Games was an unlikely one. Now, after a
victory at the U.S. Olympic Trials and a breakthrough performance
Friday at the Norwich Union London Super Grand Prix, Broe sees
himself as a likely finalist in the 5000 meters.

Running near the front of the chase pack for the first three
kilometers, Broe essentially paced himself to a 13:18.61 seventh
place finish, knocking nearly six seconds from his three-year-old personal
best, and most importantly for the 27-year-old, an Olympic 'A'
standard.

"I was really conservative at first," Broe said of the initial part
of his race. "I just wanted to be comfortable through 3-k. And when I
saw the [intermediate] time," roughly 8:02, "I felt really good, and I
wished I was up there. But the time right now is all that matters.
Now I have a chance for the final --that was my goal all season."

Hobbled by injury for much of the past two seasons, Broe returned to
the track on April 30 at the Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio,
running a modest 14:00.16 in his first race since June 2003. Now, he
says, the injuries are behind him.

"I'm finally just starting to come around," he said. "I think I've
got eight or ten seconds in me for sure. I was really comfortable, and I
ran by myself the last five laps. Once I knew I had it, I really
wished I was up with those guys."

Broe readily admits that the 5000 is not his favorite event. "This
is, I think, my fifth 5-k of the year; I'm not used to running this many
5k's. I still do not like the 5-k," he said, laughing. "No matter how
fit you are, it always hurts like hell."

Broe said he'd like to race at least one 1500 before leaving for
Athens, and said his confidence has now increased dramatically.

"It's good to know that you've run a PR and got 10 [seconds] left in
you."

RYAN MOORE WINS 102ND WESTERN AMATEUR
Ryan Moore stumbled but refused to go down Sunday, willing himself to
victory in the 102nd Western Amateur at Point O'Woods Golf and
Country Club. Moore sprinted to a 4-up lead over James Nitties on the
strength of a 4-under-par 31 on the front nine of the scheduled 18-hole
championship match. A gutsy comeback by Nitties brought the match
back to all square through 18, but Moore promptly halted his slide by
sinking a 33-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole, the par 4,
436-yard first.

"I pretty much just willed that one in," said Moore, 22, a senior at
UNLV and the 2004 NCAA champion. "I told my caddie: 'This putt is
going in.' I was putting well all day and waiting to make one.
Unfortunately, I had to wait until the 19th hole to get it, but at
least I did."

their spouse. In utter amazement the spouse screams "what did you
hit me for"? The golfer replies...I've been hitting everything fat

SUMMER READING-"US AGAINST THEM:AN ORAL HISTORY OF THE RYDER CUP"
Robin McMillan's book is a terrific read. For those that want to get
caught up to speed with past Ryder Cups, this is the book for you.
McMillan interviews Larry Nelson, Billy Caspar, David Fehrety, Sam
Torrance, Colin Callander, Brian Hugget, Mitch Platts and Ward
Clayton for starters. The book is highly entertaining and a must read
before the "Cupies" descend upon us.

Here is one passage.
Brian Huggett on Michigan's David Hill: "Hill played absolutely
magnificently throughout the week. He held the team together. He
stopped us winning. I mean, he won all of his matches. If he'd
halved just one of them, we'd have one the Ryder Cup."

PRESERVE PRESERVED AS COYOTE PRESERVE EAST
The financial troubled Preserve GC has a new owner, the folks who own
the Coyote GC just down the road. The GM is Stan Sall. We wish them
well.

The Preserve, an Arnold Palmer design, features five par three holes,
a tough layout and striking design; has another chance a survival.
Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Peter Allen for this update.
