The matches, which will take place on September 6 and 7, pits 10 players from the United States against a team representing Great Britain and Ireland. The final two players will be selected to the squad after the U.S. Amateur Championship on August 24. Adam Rubinson, a semi-finalist at the Western Am was one of the eight selected. Those selected Monday included Bill Haas, Trip Kuehne, Matt Hendrix, Brock Mackenzie, Ryan Moore, Chris Nallen, Adam Rubinson and Casey Wittenberg. The coach of the team is Bob Lewis, a four-time Walker Cup team member and three-time USGA championship runner-up. Haas and Kuehne recently qualified for the U.S. Open. Kuehne is the only one of the eight players that has previous Walker Cup experience, having played on the 1995 team. Haas meanwhile was a semifinalist in the 2002 U.S. Amateur after being the medalist during the stroke play portion. Hendrix, who will be a senior this fall, was a member of Clemson's 2003 NCAA Championship and Atlantic Coast Conference Championship team. Mackenzie finished fifth in the 2003 NCAA Championship while a member of the University of Washington's golf team. He set a school record with his 71.1 stroke average in 2002. Moore won the 2002 U.S. Amateur Public Links championship and was a quarterfinalist at the 2002 U.S. Amateur. He also qualified for the 2002 U.S. Open and made the cut at the 2003 Masters Tournament. Nallen won the 2003 Northeast Amateur and finished fourth at the 2002 Porter Cup. Rubinson was the 2003 Conference USA Player of the Year and recently finished fifth at the 2003 Northeast Amateur. At 18, Wittenberg is the youngest member of either squad. In 2003, he has posted victories at the Southern Amateur and the Porter Cup. The streamed video coverage will also include a live audio feed for the final two hours of play during the first two rounds, and over the final three hours of play for the last two rounds. Audio updates on all players will be available every 30 minutes. *** TRAVEL MICHIGAN WILL HIGHLIGHT GOLF ON NEXT RADIO PROGRAM ON WJR Dave Richards, CEO of Golf Marketing Services, was a guest on last week's Travel Michigan program. Interest was of such a nature that the entire hour will be devoted to golf on this week's show. Travel Michigan is on from 6:00 to 7:00 on 760 WJR. *** MICHIGAN AMATEUR PUTTING CHAMPIONSHIP AUGUST 23-24 Shepherd's Hollow Golf Club will host the inaugural Michigan Amateur Putting Championship Saturday and Sunday, August 23-24. The championship, a two-day, 36-hole event, is open to two-person teams of any composition - men, women, seniors, juniors, public players and private club members are all welcome to form teams and compete. "This is a genuine competition designed to allow players of all handicaps to compete fairly. Everyone can compete evenly when it comes to putting - puttings about feel and touch - not power. Anyone has a chance to win," said Mike Bylen, managing partner of Shepherd's Hollow, who founded the event. "We're going to use the 27-best greens in the area to determine the best putters in Michigan." Both rounds will begin with a shotgun start at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The entry fee is $125 per-team, which includes golf cart, prizes, soft drinks and hors d'oeuvres at a Saturday night reception. For more information or to enter the championship, phone Shepherd's Hollow at (248) 922-0300 s Taken and edited from a Golf Marketing Services PR release. *** BARRONS ROLLS OUT THE GRIM NEWS WITH THEIR "A ROUGH ROUND" STORY By Jonathan Laing. The Barrons July 28 issue featured a cover story on golf entiled, "The Golf Glut". It is available online for a fee at http://barrons.com and is a great read. Some of the highlights included: ...rounds dropped from 518 million in 2000 to 502 million in 2002. We are currently on track to do 491 million this year. ...50 courses closed because of financial matters ...400 courses are up for sale ...bank financing is drying up ...green fees have become outrageous John Rooney, who presented at the 1st Michigan Golf Summit and is a consultant to the golf industry, indicated that the five-six hour commitment to golf is less attractive for time pressed adults. However, everything is cyclical and while the Barrons story was definitely a downer, it did point out that there will continue to be another 200+ courses coming online each year and that a comeback in the market would create a comeback in the golf market and could cure many current ills. *** FORBES LAUDS GRAND BEND'S OAKWOOD INN AND OTHER GOLF ON THE CANADIAN SIDE OF LAKE HURON Forbes Magazine ran a nice article lauding our Canadian neighbors, many of whom get the MGN, in particular, singling out Oakwood Inn Resort in Grand Bend. This resort has gone through some considerable changes this year, adding a new indoor pool, a conference area and a new pine lodge with 34 more rooms. They have a nice 18 resort course that is celebrating its 82nd year of serving the golfing public. http://oakwoodinnresort.com *** BOYNE COMMERCIALS The new :30 television commercials that Boyne is running are spectacular. They continue to benchmark golf marketing in Michigan. *** CLIO CC HOST GAM WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP The 12th GAM Women's Championship will be held August 18-19 at Clio Country Club. This event, sponsored by Ford Division, will feature many of the state's top female amateur golfers. The GAM Women's Championship will begin on Monday, August 18 with the first 18-hole round of stroke play. The second and final round will be on Tuesday. In case of a tie for the Championship, an immediate hole-by-hole playoff will be used to determine the winner. The tournament is open to all female GAM members with a GAM/USGA Handicap Index of 15.4 or less. The field is limited to 144 golfers. Submitted by Toni Branch *** MICHIGAN SENDS TWO OF EIGHT BIG HITTERS TO LONG DRIVE CONTEST IN MESQUITE The first two of 18 district finals conducted in the United States and Canada for the 2003 RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship awarded 18 long drivers tickets to the big show in Mesquite. Taken from Andrew Dietderich story in Crain's Detroit Business, August 11-17. *** MISSISSIPPI TO HOST ING The International Network of Golf, who held their conference in Gaylord a couple of years ago, has selected Mississippi this year. Mississippi was recently named the "Best Up-and-Coming Domestic Golf Destination of the Year" by The Golf Insider (http://www.thegolfinsider.com), a leading golf-travel-rating publication? This does not come as a big surprise to us, our Michigan Golfer Television Show host, Bill Shelton visited Mississippi last year and filed this report: http://michigangolfer.tv/2003shows/show2/index.html *** NAME IS SORTA THE SAME Cedar Chase Golf Club Cedar Springs Cedar Creek Golf Course Battle Creek Cedar Glen Golf Course New Baltimore Cedar Hills Golf Course Traverse City Cedar Valley Golf Club Comins *** GOLF CHANNEL COVERAGE OF BAY MILLS OPEN - Thurs.
