BARRONS ROLLS OUT THE GRIM NEWS WITH THEIR "A ROUGH ROUND" STORY
By Jonathan Laing.
The Barrons July 28 issue featured a cover story on golf entiled, "The
Glut". It is available online for a fee at http://barrons.com and is a
great read. Some of the highlights included:
...rounds dropped from 518 million in 2000 to 502 million in 2002. We
currently on track to do 491 million this year.
...50 courses closed because of financial matters
...400 courses are up for sale
...bank financing is drying up
...green fees have become outrageous
John Rooney, who presented at the 1st Michigan Golf Summit and is a
consultant to the golf industry, indicated that the five-six hour
commitment to golf is less attractive for time pressed adults.
However, everything is cyclical and while the Barrons story was
a downer, it did point out that there will continue to be another 200+
courses coming online each year and that a comeback in the market would
create a comeback in the golf market and could cure many current ills.
