MGN ON THE ROAD

Acme-Grand Traverse Resort
Is there a better view of a golf resort than going south on 31 and looking at the complex just before you run into M-72? Also, the morning buffet is a nice way to start the day.

Bellaire-Shanty Creek
In the MGN travels and travails across the state, we always try and catch the setting sun at Shanty Creek's Summit. A nice glass of wine and the visual feast of that moment is a powerfully concluding momento of a day's passing.

Bellaire--Hawk's Eye
In other news, John Robinson the architect of The Chief and Grayling's Hawk's Ridge, will be on hand for the media day at Hawk's Eye on August 26.

Boyne Falls
At Boyne Mountain the big news is the continual work on the new hotel and water park. It is a massive complex and will change Boyne Mountain into a major destination. May 2005 is still the official opening date.

Boyne Country-Boyne Country/True North
We opened our Friday morning MGN radio show with Peter Fitzsimmons of the Boyne Country Convention and Vistors Bureau. Peter discussed the newest addition to their golf inventory, True North. True North will accept public play until their membership fills up. The cost, around the $130 mark, is second to the price tag at Bay Harbor. Boyne Country is an embarrassment of riches, with courses from such architects as Robert Trent Jones, Bill Newcomb, Arthur Hills and now Jim Engh. Still on the drawing boards at Boyne Mountain, is a course to be designed by Pete Dye.

Gaylord-The Loon, Otsego, Marsh Ridge

Mike Husby is looking a little frazzled. Mike keeps busy as an owner and GM of The Loon, the Tournament Director of the Bay Mills Open and a golf course architect. The Loon just hosted the Michigan PGA Seniors Championship on Monday and Tuesday, where Bob Ackerman put together rounds of 68 and 69 to win. The Loon will host the state Buick Scramble on September 7 as well as its own Loon Golf Course Invitational on September 4 and 5.

Ostego Club's Scott Chesley, who never met a piece of real estate he didn't like, is excited about the new Woods development at the Otsego Club. It is the latest building phase for the resort. Gaylord continues its amazing growth along the M-32 highway.

Paul Beachnau, head of the Gaylord CVB, put down his golf clubs for the day and picked up his bike to compete and complete the Mark Mellon Memorial Triathlon this past week.

Kewadin-A-GA-MING/Sundance

We were taping a couple of upcoming shows at A-Ga-Ming this past week and had the opportunity to explore the new Sundance GC with architect Jerry Matthews. Sundance will open next year and bring the A Ga Ming layout to 36 holes. Plans call for a new clubhouse and lots of additional lodging in the forseeable future. Co-owners Mike Brown and Larry Laverly have put together a very successful operation and the new course should do well.

Traverse City-Chip and Sip-Park Place Hotel

Park Place Hotel's marketing guru, Bill Knopp, feels that the fall "Sip and Chip" collaboration between golf courses and wineries will continue to spread. Last year, the wine industry got hurt badly as a late freeze eliminated about 90% of the Leelanau and Traverse City grape harvest. This year, the growing season as been terrific and the yields should be spectacular. For those interested in the Leelanau wineries, you can catch all the action on our special wine video page at http://michigantravel.tv/2004wineries/

HAL SUTTON ON THE UPCOMING RYDER CUP

Following are excerpts from an interview session with Hal Sutton, that appeared on "The Wire".

JULIUS MASON [Director of Public Relations and Media Relations for the PGA of America] : I think we are looking at 13 days before the United States Ryder Cup Captain Hal Sutton has to make two very difficult decisions, or maybe not so difficult decisions, I'm not quite sure. In 26 days, the European Ryder Cup Captain, Bernhard Langer, will make his two captain's selections. And 45 days till the Ryder Cup Matches begin.

CAPTAIN HAL SUTTON: Th ank you all for being here. I'm excited to be here. Eight months went by fast, watching the great players.

I'm excited. I was at Oakland Hills yesterday. I played 27 holes there. It's in great shape. I'm a little bit tired because we started early, we finished late and then I flew five hours to get here. But anyway, the venue is set. The tents are up. I could feel it in the air. I'm sure we've got a lot of questions about who is playing and who will not. Getting more excited as it gets closer. I've said all along, I could talk all day long about it, so let's cut the small talk out and move on.

Q: Well, to really cut to the chase, we all know occasionally there are some betting on golf. If you had to make a line right now, if you were a bookmaker and you had to put up a line for the Ryder Cup Matches, what would it be?

CAPTAIN HAL SUTTON: I like the United States' chances. I'm not a bookmaker and I would not know anywhere close to what the odds are, but I think the U.S. team is going to be outstanding.

Q: Just for information, the outgoing captain, Sam Torrance, made the line dead even when asked the same question by a reporter. Does that seem a little out of whack to you?

CAPTAIN HAL SUTTON: He said that about?

Q: About these upcoming matches. The line he would make it dead even, maybe give the United States an 11-10 favorite because it's their home turf.

CAPTAIN HAL SUTTON: You know, that's his opinion. He's entitled to his opinion. My opinion is I think we're the favorite.

Q: Can you talk about the home-field advantage? In '99 when Crenshaw had Brookline, he talked about having the home-field advantage and taking advantage of the home-field advantage. As far as you being captain, have you talked to the top four players who have already clinched spots on the Ryder Cup; and have they played Oakland Hills, have th ey practiced, are they taking advantage of the home-field advantage that's here?

CAPTAIN HAL SUTTON: Well, the home-field advantage didn't just start this year. I mean, they have played Oakland Hills before in major championships. There have been some guys playing Oakland Hills already this year. There's a lot of things that we talk about when we talk about home-field advantage. Having been a player with four teams, I played two in Europe and I played two over here and walked over to the first tee, it's pretty evident without even knowing the golf course that you're in your home turf. People are excited about it. You hear your alma mater, you see your American flag. You know, it's pretty evident to me that we are on home turf. I think that's a big part of it. I think that's always been a big part of it. You know, we watched many years of history there and different captains talking about it. It's harder to play when you're on your home turf.

Q: How much do you weigh how well guys are playing right now, as opposed to other factors like experience and track record over the years?

CAPTAIN HAL SUTTON: There's no substitute for guys playing really well, currently. There are other ingredients that factor into it, and how well they mix with the team; what are we missing from the team that I can add to it through a pick; how their game is suited to a particular golf course we are playing.

You know Oakland Hills, I played it a lot. I wouldn't know the statistic of this, but I think it would be hard for a player that's actually trying to play to play the current golf course as much as I have played it in the last year and a half. Oakland Hills requires a lot of things. It requires restraint; that's one thing, so that I'm going to be looking at people that manage their game very well, because there are many places that you cannot open up at Oakland Hills.

So I guess what I'm telling you is, is power is not necessarily everything at Oakland Hills.

32ND MICHIGAN STATE JUNIOR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Dave Ellis of Negaunee, beat Marc Hulwether of Montrose in a sudden death playoff at A Ga Ming GC in Kewadin. Dick Loring, tournament director, thought the course was terrific and has booked it fo 2006.

LPGA TIP OF THE WEEK

This week's tip courtesy of Betsy Cullen, Pine Forest Country Club, Houston, Texas

Distance putting
When having trouble gauging the distance of a putt, try visualizing the ball rolling on the proper path to the hole and then returning on the same path back to the putter. This ?o-yo?visual could give you a better feel for the exact end of the putt. You can even go so far as to feel the ball come back and hit the putter with the impact you think would be appropriate for that length of putt. The back-and-forth roll seen several times before you putt is a way of creating an indelible image and keying you into sensing how hard to hit the ball.

19TH HOLE-GOLF STORY WITH A MORAL In 1923, Who Was:
1. President of the largest steel company?
2. President of the largest gas company?
3. President of the New YorkStock Exchange?
4. Greatest wheat speculator?
5. President of the Bank of International Settlement?
6. Great Bear of Wall Street?

These men were considered some of the worlds most successful of their days. Now, 80 years later, the history book asks us, if we know what ultimately became of them.

The Answers:
1. The president of the largest steel company. Charles Schwab, died a pauper.
2. The president of the largest gas company, Edward Hopson, went insane.
3. The president of the NYSE, Richard Whitney, was released from prison to die at home.
4. The greatest wheat speculator, Arthur Cooger, died abroad, penniless.
5. The president of the Bank of International Settlement, shot himself.
6. The Great Bear of Wall Street, Cosabee Livermore, also committed suicide.

However, in that same year, 1923, the PGA Champion and the winner of the most important golf tournament, the US Open, was Gene Sarazen. What became of him?

He played golf until he was 92, died in 1999 at the age of 95. He was financially secure at the time of his death.

The Moral: Screw work. Play golf. Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Jim Neff for this gem.

WILLIAMSON CUP MATCHES TO BE HOSTED BY GAM

The 41st Williamson Cup Matches will be hosted by the Golf Association of Michigan at the Country Club of Detroit August 9-10. The Williamson Cup is an international event that gives top junior golfers the opportunity to represent their state and regional associations in an annual competition. Junior golfers from up to 10 State and Canadian golf associations send teams to compete in the event. The host association is determined through a rotation schedule.

When the GAM learned that they would host the 2004 Williamson Cup Matches, the Country Club of Detroit immediately came to mind since 2004 will mark the 50th anniversary of Arnold Palmer's first U.S. Amateur Championship, which coincidentally was played at Country Club of Detroit. The club graciously agreed to host the event. Each state or Canadian golf association sends a team of four golfers. The event is a two-day, 36-hole stroke play competition.
