MGN ON THE ROAD
Upper Peninsula-TimberStone, Greywalls, Chocolay Downs and Red Fox Run Our travels this week will have taken us to Pine Mountain Resort in Iron Mountain, the newly purchased Chocolay Downs and the Red Fox Run course of MGCOA President, Frank Guastella.

The big news at Pine Mountain Resort, according to GM Rick Gregorio, is that Pine Mountain and Timberstone are now owned and operated by the new principals, Jim and Sally Websterm Paul Bertsche and Wendy Andrews. The very popular Director of Golf, Susie Fox and Superintendent Bill Keehoss have been retained. Timberstone was voted Golf Course of the Year by the MGCOA in 2004. This Jerry Matthews http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/timberstone/ is one of 17 golf courses to receive the five star rating from Golf Digest.

Pine Mountain also hosts the very popular Tom Izzo and Steve Mariucci tournamnet http://michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/show4/index.html http://pinemountainresort.com We found their suites spacious and comfortable, the food excellent, the service excellent and the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame display, located in their sports bar, informative.

The golf course was in terrific shape and it provided both a visual feast and a challenge of the first order. Mike Duff, one of our foursome, and a player who has played many golf courses in Michigan said, "This has just become my favorite course in Michigan."According to Susie Fox, the amount of downstate travel to the course has picked up due to their being named Michigan Golf Course of the Year in 2004 and their Five Star rating in Golf Digest.

Banff and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
This week the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel hosted the Telus Skins Game that featured John Daly, Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus, Sergio Garcia and Canadian Stephan Ames. The two day event was limited to 5,000 spectators a day by the Canadian National Park Service, making it a tough ticket.

The course was in fantastic shape and Stanley Thompson would have been proud how his 1921 creation held up. The course setting in the Canadian Rockies with its sheer mountain walls, Bowden Falls and fast moving streams highlights the course and makes it difficult to keep your head into the game. A third nine that was dropped in in 1988 provides more golf for the hotel but its design does detract from the Thompson course. The Michigan Golfer Television Channel will feature the course at a later date this year.

In Edmonton, the Blackhawk Golf Course hosted Tom Watson, Peter Jacobsen, Paul Azinger and Nancy Grublis for a charity golf exhibition.

The Ryder Cup in the 1950's
In the 50's professional golf became very popular with stars like Ben Hogan and Arnold Palmer then appearing on television. Women like Babe Zaharias-Didrikson created the Ladies Professional Golf Association in 1950, so women were joining men on golf courses all over America. It was against this background that the Ryder Cup continued to strengthen its hold on the golfing community after its spartan post war comeback. The 50's Ryder Cup matches were remembered by the teams going to a football game together, the outstanding play of Jimmy Demaret, Michigan's Walter Burkemo, Mike Souchak and Chick Harbert playing on U.S. teams, the captaincy of Sam Snead and Lloyd Magrum, a very scary plane ride and the first defeat of the U.S. team since 1933.

PALMER RECALLS RYDER CUP DAYS
That Arnold Palmer plans to be on hand when The 2006 Ryder Cup is held September 22-24 at Straffan, County Kildare, Ireland, is appropriate, not only because of his affection for one of the great events in golf and his exceptional performances in it, but also because his golf course, The K Club, is playing host to the biennial matches between Europe and the United States.

I am looking forward to watching the matches and seeing how the players respond to competing on what I consider one of my best golf courses, Palmer, who will be 77 on September 10, said with notable anticipation in his voice. With some of the changes we made for the Ryder Cup, The K Club has so many strong holes, and I think it's going to produce an exciting competition. I think the golf course will hold up quite well when it's all said and done, and I think the players will enjoy the challenge there.

Palmer's record in the Ryder Cup is one of the most distinguished in the history of the event. In six appearances starting in 1961 and ending in 1973, Palmer played in 32 matches and won 22, the most ever for a U.S. player. His 23 points is second only to Billy Casper, who scored 23 ? for America. His 11 singles matches and six victories are both all-time highs for the U.S. The U.S. won each of the six times Palmer competed. In addition, he was the winning captain in 1975 when his U.S. squad swept to a resounding 21-11 decision at Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, not far from Palmer's hometown of Latrobe.

I'm extremely proud of my Ryder Cup record. It meant a lot to me and it still means a lot to me, said Palmer, who played in 1961, 63, 65, 67, 71 and 73. From the day I first started playing, I thought that representing your country in a major golf tournament was one of the most important things I could do in the game. I still get all choked up now thinking about how much I enjoyed it, how much fun I had playing, and how I enjoyed winning for my country.

20,000 PARTICIPATE IN WOMEN'S GOLF WEEK
More than 20,000 women nationwide were treated to free golf lessons and golf-related networking and social activities at hundreds of golf facilities across the country June 3-10, as part of part of American Express Women's Golf Week The event was a precedent-setting collaboration of the top U.S. golf organizations led by Golf 20/20 aimed at increasing the participation of women in the game of golf. The participation nearly doubled from its inaugural year in 2005, with a 160% increase in the number of registered host facilities.

According to research conducted by the National Golf Foundation, women comprise the fastest-growing segment of the golf market, accounting for more than 2.5 million "core" golfers (those playing at least eight rounds of golf annually) and millions of additional occasional or beginning women golfers. In fact, one in five "core" golfers are women, and the number is growing. Women also spend billions of dollars annually on golf rounds, apparel and equipment ($4.3 billion in 2002, according to NGF), making them a powerful consumer group within the golf industry.

JUNE ROUNDS DOWN-YTD UP
Although rounds played slipped 0.7% in June 2006 vs. June 2005, the National Golf Foundation reported a 3.0% increase in rounds played for the first six months of 2006. The reporting is based on data from operators at more than 1,800 golf facilities.

For the full year 2005, rounds played were down 0.1%.

Year-to-date, regions experiencing the largest positive swings were the Upper Midwest (+6.9%), Southeast (+5.7%) and Mid-Atlantic (+5.5%). Only three regions are slightly into red numbers year-to-date _ the Northeast (-0.2%), Southwest (-0.6%) and Northwest (-1.1%).

For June, play was down at both public and private facilities. Year-to-date, play at premium public courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart above $70) are up 1.5%. At value courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart below $40), rounds played rose 3.2%. At standard courses ($40-70), play was up 3.1%.

At all public courses, rounds played were up 0.1% for 2005; year-to-date 2006, up 3.0%. At private clubs, 2005 rounds played were down 1.0%; year-to-date 2006, also up 3.0%.

Golf Datatech reported a 0.7% decline in rounds played in June and a 2.3% increase through the first six months of 2006.
