Gaylord-Marsh Ridge
Larry Bowden, owner of The Natural and now the facilities at Marsh
Ridge Resort, is busy doing what he does best, building things.
Larry, who built Beaver Creek Resort into a major player RV resort in the
state, will be reworking all of the lodging at Marsh Ridge by turning
them into condos. The facilities are in a great setting and he should
do well. Meanwhile the Marsh Ridge Golf Course is continuing to do
business under a different company and is still owned by the Bott
family.

Mackinac Island-Mission Point Resort
As you read this, my feet will be up and I will be sipping a Bloody
Mary on the patio of Mission Point Resort. This has really become a
terrific resort in the past decade. They have taken this marvelous
and historic structure and upgraded it substantially. I normally
visit the resort when we cover the Great Turtle 1/2 Marathon in late
October. Anyway, enjoy your week and MGN hopes you can take a little
time off as well.

Traverse City
President Bush had just rolled into town a few days ago and things
were starting to quiet down. We stopped into the Park Place Hotel to
grab some of their WIFI and then head out. The Park Place is
featured in our special Leelanau Wine Television show page. They are
involved with the "Sip and Chip" program .

RYDER CUP-THE 40'S
Join our host Bill Shelton and "The Haig", as they chronicle the
Ryder Cup in the decade of the 40's. In 1947, the U.S. defeated Britain's
11-1 as the teams resumed play after WWII. Robert Hudson, a fruit
grower and canner, stepped up with money and the use of the Portland
Golf Club in Oregon. Hudson met the team as they stepped off the
Queen Mary and joined them on their 4 day travel across the country.
The U.S. Team featured Byron Nelson and Sam Snead and The British
Team returned Dai Rees, Henry Cotton and King.

In 1949, the match got tighter as the U.S. beat Britain by a 7-5
score. Ben Hogan captained for the U.S. with Charles Whitcombe taking
the helm for the British Team. Hogan, was a non playing captain that
was still recovering from his accident and Byron Nelson had retired
from the game. Hogan caused a stir when he complained about the
grooves on the clubs of some of the British players. This was, no
doubt, his retaliation for an incident in 1947 when Britain's Henry
Cotton asked for an inspection of Hogan's clubs. Robert A. Hudson,
whose generosity in funding the British team resulted in saving the
Ryder Cup Matches in 1947, was appointed "Honorary Secretary" of the
1949 U.S. Ryder Cup Team.

RYDER CUP-THE 50'S
As television became more popular in the 50's, sports found growing
numbers of fans. Professional golf became very popular with stars
like Ben Hogan and Arnold Palmer helping to create the idea that to
succeed in business, men needed to play golf. Women like Babe
Zaharias-Didrikson created the Ladies Professional Golf Association
in 1950, so women were joining men on golf courses all over
America. It was against this background that the Ryder Cup continued
to strengthen its hold on the golfing community after its spartan
comeback after the war.

Join our host Bill Shelton and "The Haig", as they chronicle the
Ryder Cup in the decade of the 50's. In this show, they discuss, the Ryder
Cup teams going to a football game together, the outstanding play of
Jimmy Demaret, Michigan's Walter Burkemo, Mike Souchak and Chick
Harbert playing on U.S. teams, the captaincy of Sam Snead and Lloyd
Magrum, a very scary plane ride and the first defeat of the U.S. team
since 1933. Viewers will also be treated to an interview with Al
Barlow and Mary Sarazen about Gene Sarazen's Wonderful World of Golf
and the impact it had on the sport.

*** RYDER CUP CAPTAIN'S SELECTION PRESS CONFERENCE
CAPTAIN HAL SUTTON: Kind of became aware of what being the captain
of the Ryder Cup Team was all about. This was going to be very difficult
and it became a very difficult decision. There were people moving in
and out and I've never been a captain, I will ask Julius before this
day is over with, has there ever been that much movement.

JULIUS MASON: (PHONE) Mr. Haas, are you with us?

JAY HAAS: I'm here.

CAPTAIN HAL SUTTON: We cannot be more excited about having you, Jay.

JAY HAAS: Well, I was in the car, and obviously, I didn't know what
to expect and figured I would get a call one way or the other, and Hal
and I had a little small talk and then said, we would sure love to
have you on the team -- and kind of was waiting for a bus, I didn't
know what to say, I was emotional about it, it was something I had
pointed toward for the last couple of years now, and to realize that
is pretty exciting.

CAPTAIN HAL SUTTON: Well, Jay, you have played very well. I, for one,
and certainly everybody else on this team, will be excited to have
your father image on our team (laughter). And speaking of fatherly
image --

JAY HAAS: I said, "I'm playing with some people that are about my
kids' age, I'm comfortable with that."

CAPTAIN HAL SUTTON: "…our next guy who I am extremely excited to have
on the team is Stewart Cink.

STEWART CINK: Well, I don't remember ever being this flattered in my
life, especially with Hal and I, we shared Ryder Cup spots where he
was playing and I was playing the last time, and just to know that
the captain of the Ryder Cup Team thinks enough of me as a player and
person to pick me and put me on the team; it's like a dream come
true.

And like Jay said, and I couldn't hear everything Jay said, but I did
hear him say he was disappointed that he didn't qualify on his own,
and I'm the same way. I wanted to finish high enough in the PGA to
guarantee myself a spot, but I didn't. So I'm just so excited to play
for the U.S. and to play for Hal and those other guys on the team. I
was looking at the list last night, I think it's going to be so much
fun and we're going to mesh really well.

LPGA TIP OF THE WEEK
This week's tip courtesy of Sally Bricker, 76 Golf World, Stuart, Fla.

Fat shot fix
One of the most common causes of the fat shot with shorter irons is a
late weight transfer back to the target side. The expression of a
"fat" hit refers to a divot that appears behind and underneath the
golf ball. The result is a shot that travels a much shorter than the
intended distance. The fat hit often occurs on an "easy" pitching
wedge or other short iron swing. When you are in between distances,
an easy 9-iron should, theoretically, be simpler to execute than a
hard, full swing with the pitching wedge. If your "easy" swing often
results in a fat hit, try this simple tip. Swing easy by limiting the
weight transfer to your back foot during the back swing. This
lessens your normal power just by reducing your lower body action.
More importantly, keeping more weight on your target side during the
back swing makes it much easier to fully return to your target side
before impact. With your weight properly positioned at impact, your
divot should now appear underneath and in front of the golf ball. The
result is the crisp sound of the clubface striking the golf ball before
the turf and no more fear of the fat hit on an easy swing.

NOTES FROM THE CHAMPIONS TOUR
According to ShotLink, Bruce Fleisher misses fairways to the left the
least of anyone on the Champions Tour--6.0% of the time. Allen Doyle
misses to the right the least of anyone--5.7%.

Only four players are under-par for the season on Par-3 holes. The
number grows to nine on Par-4s and finally, 80 of 83 ranked players
are under par on the Par-5s this year.

Who's the number one Ball-Striker on the Champions Tour? Actually,
it's a tie between Hale Irwin and Tom Kite.

Craig Stadler will attempt to successfully defend his title this week
at the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn. If he does so, he'll
only be the second player this year to do so. Jim Thorpe was successful
earlier this summer at the Commerce Bank Long Island Classic.

***
HEATON WINS INAUGURAL SEVEN LAKES PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP
John Heaton' s steady play overcame a new course record (three under
par 68 set by Tom Wigle in the first round) to win the first annual
Seven Lakes Players Championship in Windsor, Ontario. Behind by
three shots at the end of the morning round, Heaton held steady as the
winds picked up and shot a one under par 70 in the afternoon round to be
the only player under par for the championship (one under par 141 total).
His margin of victory was four strokes better than second place
finisher Greg Kenette, who was followed by Jeff Young in third.

GLOVES IN A BOTTLE
OK, I got some free product in the mail the other day and I am
chirping about it here. I used the new Gloves in a Bottle, a skin
care product, recently before a round of golf. And while I still had
problems dropping those four footers for double bogeys, I was more
eager to shake the hand of my opponent because they were, shall I
say... softer.
