GOLFER TELEVISION ============================ Gaylord -Treetops Par-3
Amateur Shootout Threetops at Treetops has become a famous golf course in
America. Just as people travel to Pebble Beach, Kohler and Pinehurst, they are
now traveling to Gaylord, Michigan to play this delighful Rick Smith creation.
In our show, Kevin McKinley, Treetops Director of Golf, shows us around the
Treetops Amateur Par-3 Shootout, their clinic, their version of the "Little
Break" and then observing players shooting for a $10,000 hole in one. Jennie
McCafferty is our host.

online athttp://michigangolfer.tv/2007shows/kircher_cup/ . Look
for the Steve Kircher victory lap when his partner Grant Bruce eagled the final
hole. Our host for the show, Jennie McCafferty, chats with tournament originator
and fabled Michigan golfer, Glen Johnson.
There is some serious golf
played by the 150-180 golfers that visit Boyne Highlands each year for this
Labor Day weekend tournament. This year's tournament was played on The Heather

===========================================================================+ JUST
AS WE THOUGHT... GLSP, THE WORLD'S OLDEST INTERNET TELEVISION
NETWORK ===========================================================================+ "It's
time to retire 'surfing the web' from the "Dictionary of Internet Jargon". You
hardly ever hear it nowadays because that's not what most of us do when we go
online anymore. We don't surf, we do specific things--e-mailing, instant
messaging, shopping Googling. And according to two recent studies from Cisco and
the Onine Publishing Association (OPA), what people do more than anything online
is consume 'content', look at videos and photographs, read the news, and get the
lowdown on friends and celebrities at MySpace or Facebook. In other words, we've
become web potatoes."
This article in the September issue of Fortune, goes on to say that consumer
traffic use is averaging 57% growth. "As the wild popularity of You Tube has
shown, video and the web were made for each other. It's only a matter of time
before most video-even plain old tv- will be delivered to your living room via
the web."*
GLSP put its first video, a show featuring Michigan golf
architect William Newcomb, online in 2001 http://michigangolfer.tv/2001shows/show1/index.html. this
year, our viewership on our five channels, Michigan Golfer, Michigan Skier,
Michigan Travel, Running Canada and Michigan Runner will near two million
viewers. To our over 1300 shows now online, we have added nearly a hundred to
You Tube. In addition, the online distribution of the Michigan Golfer, is now
averaging 15,000 readers per issue. Hopefully, by next year, our online
readership will surpass the 20,000 readers we had per issue with our print
magazine.

================= MGN ON THE
ROAD ================= Montreal-Royal Montreal Golf Club In town to
videotape theMarathonOasis de Montreal, we had the opportunity to drop in on the
Royal Montreal GC, the oldest golf club in North America, founded in 1873. The
club was in the midst of hosting the 109th competition of the Brookline and
Royal Montreal competition, the oldest such competition in North
America.
The Royal Montreal's Blue Course will be the site of the
upcoming President's Cup. Because of the tournament, we were limited somewhat in
our access to the course. However, we did meet withTom Clark, the Executive
Director of The Presidents Cup.,who ran the Ford Seniors Players Tournaments at
the TPC Dearborn for a number of years.
Clark, first of all, wanted us to
give his regards to all of his friends in Michigan. While he misses his friends,
he has had an absolutely wonderful time in Montreal gearing up for this
tournament. Tickets have moved well and the sponsor village is rising as we
read. Having Canada's Mike Weir on the team has been a big plus for ticket
sales. Royal Montreal some room to spread out as it has 45 holes of golf within
its boundaries on Ile Bizard.

BLUE COURSE The Royal Montreal Golf Club, the
oldest golf club in North America, was founded on November 4, 1873. It was
originally a 9-hole layout on Fletcher’s Field, part of Mount Royal Park. In
1896, the Club moved to Dixie, in the parish of Dorval, where 36 holes were
enjoyed until the pressures of urban growth again dictated a decision to
relocate. The Club moved to its present location on Ile Bizard in 1959, where 45
holes were designed by renowned Golf Course Architect Dick Wilson and his
Associate Joe Lee.
In 2004, Rees Jones was retained to remodel the Blue
Course. Renovations to the Front Nine were commenced in September, 2004 and
completed in the Spring of 2005. The Back Nine of the Blue Course was renovated
in the Fall of 2005 and reopened for play in the August 2006. Portions of the
above information were taken from the President's Cup and Royal Montreal
websites.
============================ TIM HYGH ON THE ROAD
AGAIN =========================== Tim Hygh, known for his excellent press
room work with most of Michigan's PGA tournaments, has taken a position as the
new Station Manager at WDET-FM in Detroit. Tim has had held a variety of sales
and management positions in radio, working for WJR and of late, Michigan Talk
Network. Hygh takes over this coming Monday. Detroit's WDET-FM is a premier
radio station in Michigan and this is a terrific move for Hygh.
He leaves Michigan Talk Radio, after launching "The Big Show" with pal,
Michael Shiels last year. Shiels, former producer for JP McCarthy's radio show,
is knocking them dead with his Lansing based show. He also brought on Dan
Mulhern, Michigan First Gentelman, to do an afternoon drive time show. Mulhern's
show, launched in the past six months, is also doing well.

JULY GOLF ROUNDS PLAYED INCREASE, NEARLY ELIMINATING YTD
DECLINE ========================================================================== After
rising 3.4% in June, July rounds played rose 4.1%. Because the months May
through July have a high volume of rounds, the year-to-date deficit dropped
dramatically, according to the National Golf Foundation. Year-to-date rounds,
which had fallen 9.0% through April, were down only 0.4% through
July.
The reporting is based on data from operators at more than 1,800
golf facilities. For the full year 2006, rounds played were up 0.8%.
With
Texas being hard-hit by Mother Nature, the South Central and Gulf Coast
registered the worst July performance regionally. And the South Central is down
10% for the year. Meanwhile, the Lower Midwest (up 8.9%) and Mid-Atlantic (up
8.0%) had the best showing in July.
Of the 11 regions surveyed, seven showed year-to-date declines. The
Southwest region was the strongest, up 3.4%. The Southeast, Southwest and
Northwest regions also showed increases. The sharpest decline was in the South
Central region, down 10.0% year-to-date. The Gulf Coast region trailed, down
4.6%.
For the seven months, play at value courses (those with peak season
weekend green fees with cart below $40), was down (-0.4%). At premium public
courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart above $70) rounds
played have risen to 0.1%. At standard courses ($40-70), play was up 0.3%.
Overall, rounds played at all public courses fell 0.1%
year-to-date.
Private courses didn_t do quite as well, with rounds played
for the seven months falling 1.8%.
According to Golf Datatech, rounds
wereup3.7%July 2007 compared toJuly 2006 and are down0.2% (-0.2%)year to date.
The report includes3,080 reporting courses. Information from NSGA Research
News Volume 9, No. 17 September 10, 2007 NSGA research is available on
the website (http://www.nsga.org).

================== BLONDE
MORTICIAN ================== A man who just died is delivered to a local
mortuary wearing an expensive, expertly tailored black suit.
The Blonde
mortician asks the deceased's wife how she would like the body dressed. The
mortician points out that the man does look good in the black suit he is already
wearing
The widow, however, says that she always thought her husband
looked his best in blue, and that she wants him in a blue suit. She gives the
Blonde mortician a blank check and says, "I don't care what it costs, but please
have my husband in a blue suit for the viewing."
The woman returns the
next day for the wake. To her delight, she finds her husband dressed in a
gorgeous blue suit with a subtle chalk stripe; the suit fits him
perfectly.
She says to the mortician,"Whatever this cost, I'm very
satisfied. You did an excellent job and I'm very grateful. How much did you
spend?"
To her astonishment, the blondemortician presents her with the
blank check.
"There's no charge," the mortician says.
"No, really,
I must compensate you for the cost of that exquisite blue suit!" she
says.
"Honestly, ma'am," the blonde says, "it cost nothing. You see, a
deceased gentleman of about your husband's size was brought in shortly after you
left yesterday, and he was wearing an attractive blue suit. I asked his wife if
she minded him going to his grave wearing a black suit instead, and she said it
made no difference as long as he looked nice."
"So I just switched the
heads."

MGN ON THE ROAD
=================
East Lansing-Forest Akers East Course
The very talented MSU women's golf team had to give up their East
course as thousands of runners took over the rolling fairways and tees
for the Spartan Invitational. The course was in terrific shape and was
kept that way by the ground crew who made sure that the course's
greens were not a part of the course. Those in the golf business need
not be reminded, but to others, golf courses supply the courses for
many of our up and coming cross country and long distance running
athletes.
Marshall-The Medalist
The caring and feeding of The Medalist continues, as the management
team of Osprey Recreation, has supplied the resources to continually
upgrade the facility. The current project, is to build a stairway that
will link the 18th green directly with the veranda that juts out over
the pro shop. The move will make it much easier for those that are
gathering around the green to watch closing action of a league or
tournament, to avail themselves of food or an adult beverage.
Lowell Weaver is the GM at The Medalist and has been for most of the
past decade. This is now the third and hopefully the last management
team that he will see during the remainder of his tenure.
Course architect, Bill Newcomb, was one of the early owners, along
with a little over 40 others when the club opened up. That group sold
to another, who got close to making the facility a money maker, but no
cigar. The Osprey Recreation group took over the place a few years ago
and has invested considerably in the facility.
The place was in terrific shape when we stopped by, due to the
superintendent and his crew. It also helps that Weaver was a
superintendent at The Links of Whitmore Lake, before moving to The
Medalist as the GM. Weaver indicates that they have hosted a couple of
GAM events in the past.

THOUGHTS ON THE FEDEX CUP
By Terry Moore
============================
Well the result—Tiger winning again—was no surprise but all in all the
FedEx Cup was a qualified success. The Tour wanted to generate some
fan and media interest in a "playoff model" that followed the final
major of the year—the PGA Championship--- and on this score it worked.
It always riled the Tour that none of the five majors (I include the
Ryder Cup in the usual mix) were "owned" by the Tour or its players
and that all gain more media attention and revenues than its own Tour
events. Try as it might, the Players and Tour Championship are
prestigious events but neither is deemed a "major" by the general golf
public and media. So the FedEx Cup was a worthy experiment that
definitely worked to retain the Tour's lucrative television contract
intact. And this time around, the public was indeed interested in the
Tour after the PGA Championship.
There were some bumps in the road, however. For starters, there were
some awkward and unseemly criticisms of the FedEx Cup including some
selfish sniping at the deferred compensation set-up. I mean, how bad
was it for some of these pampered millionaires, with their courtesy
cars and weekly creature comforts, to be complaining about a plan that
any tax attorney or CPA would say richly rewards them with someone
else's money? On top of it, was the unfounded criticism that players
were not informed of some of these provisions. Baloney, said Player
Policy Board rep Stewart Cink. Tour players were kept in the loop all
along, insisted Cink, with regular communiqués and meetings, most of
which was hardly attended by the all too busy superstars. Hand it to
Cink for sticking up for the Tour and giving a deserved retort to the
whiners.
Then there was the matter of certain Tour stars—namely Woods,
Mickelson and Els—skipping one of the three playoff events leading up
to the Tour Championship at East Lake. First, Tiger skips the opening
Barclays saying he needed to take a break after playing two weeks in a
row. Tim Finchem says he's "disappointed" but really can't do anything
else when the Tour always claims it merely services "independent
contractors." Then almost as a slap at the Tour and Finchem, Mickelson
decides to skip the BMW event at Cog Hill and announces his decision
and dismay with Finchem on national TV following his exciting victory
(against Tiger, no less) outside Boston. He voiced some unspecified
issues against Finchem and the Tour. Ok, so what were they? Well,
here's my take on it. I think the Tour's brain trust in fact suggested
to Tiger he could take a pass at the Barclay's because it realized if
Tiger won there, he would have essentially clinched the Cup and made
it irrelevant in generating playoff excitement. Before then, Finchem
and the Tour must have strongly encouraged Tiger, Phil and Co. to play
all three of the inaugural playoff events plus the finale for the sake
of the tourney sponsors as well as the mega-sponsor FedEx. (Recall
last year when Tiger and Phil both skipped East Lake.) So when Phil
sees Tiger taking or getting a week off, he wants to know why the
unspoken rules were changed and decides to ask for something in return
that Finchem can't or won't deliver. So hence, Phil decides to take
his ball and head home.
Finally, there was the shameful condition of East Lake GC. The bent
grass greens were no match for the hot, humid summer weather of
Atlanta and the greens were toast. Usually, this event is held in
November when cooler temps prevail. As the East Lake super observed,
no one asked him about what would happen to the greens if the event
were moved up two months and in the summer heat. I mean, Augusta
National closes for the season every May and doesn't re-open until
November for exactly this reason. Oh well, it really didn't matter
when it comes to the best player in the world competing. Tiger can
sink putts on heavy shag carpeting.
And that's why the inaugural playoff set-up and FedEx Cup turned out
so well. We all stayed glued to the tube these past few weeks to see
Tiger Woods continue his amazing dominance and command of the game.

Richards no doubt acquired his injury by picking up the expense checks
of out state golf writers for the past two decades. Cheers and a Tip

Amateur Memories with Tim Cronin Tim Cronin is the main man when it comes to
Western Am history, he wrote the book. Cronin took on the challenge of writing
the history to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the WGA. He continues to add
to his research at various stops along the way, as the Western Am has literally
been played around the country in its 106 years. The tournament has had stops in
Chicago, New Orleans and three stops in Michigan, Oakland Hills, Red Run CC and
now Point O'Woods here in Benton Harbor. http://youtube.com/watch?v=BtSzkKHC_v8
